Skip Schumaker Named National League Manager of the Year

Featured Replies

Skip Schumaker has etched his name in Miami Marlins history, becoming the fourth skipper to capture the National League Manager of the Year award. Joining the elite company of Don Mattingly (2020), Joe Girardi (2006), and Jack McKeon (2003), Schumaker's inaugural season at the helm proved to be a remarkable turnaround for the team.

Overcoming stiff competition from seasoned veterans like Brian Snitker and Craig Counsell, Schumaker's impact on the Marlins was undeniable. He guided the team to a playoff berth in 2023, their first full-season appearance since McKeon's championship-winning 2003 squad. The Marlins' 84-78 record marked a significant 15-win improvement over the 2022 season under Mattingly, far exceeding pre-season expectations.

A key factor in Miami's success was their clutch performance in close games. The Marlins boasted an impressive 33-14 record in one-run games, far surpassing any other team in Major League Baseball. They also demonstrated resilience with 41 comeback wins, never giving up despite facing adversity. While a manager's influence can be subject to debate, close games often highlight the impact of a skilled leader.

As the Marlins set their sights on another playoff run in 2024, they will likely need to once again defy expectations. In the absence of major roster overhauls this off-season, Schumaker will face the challenge of maximizing a budget-conscious roster.

With a contract extending through the 2025 season, including a team option for the final year, Schumaker is well-positioned to continue shaping the Marlins' future.

is he going to get fired now ?

I doubt he gets fired, that costs money to pay 2 managers. But I def think he will be gone within a year or 2, I think he goes to the Cards or Yankees eventually.

Congrats, Skip! Hopefully you increase the average (non World Series winning) post-MOY Marlins tenure. Between Girardi and Mattingly, the average is 1 year 🥶

skips contract is over after 2024 with team option for 2025 and kevin cash contract is over after next year 2024, so bendix could bring his old friend kevin cash here as well after next year.

Good - I honestly don't see how most of the other candidates even got votes - especially Snitker - Braves were expected to be a powerhouse, they did that - why does that warrant MOTY?

Man, Bruce is intrigued at the idea of cash coming to the team

Skip is signed through 2025 since that last season is a team option.

It is a technicality I guess, but it is different than it being a mutual option. If they want him, they have him for 2 more years whether he likes it or not. Though hopefully he likes it.

I agree with you but the explanation is that keeping a great team great all year long is a reflection on the manager especially considering how many supposedly great teams can't live up to expectations.

So I see that side of it but I'm with you that a team that is expected to succeed shouldn't get the manager of the year award. While Snitker is great plenty of managers could do what he did with the team he has.

As a child I thought that would be awesome to dive into a money pit...as an adult I realized that would likely break my neck (and money is also filthy)

Stacks of bills would be a softer landing I guess at least

And If there was no other clear cut winner, that's one thing, but Skip took a team that was expected to not be great and got us to the playoffs - how does that not warrant MOTY over an expected winning team (for those that didn't vote for him)?

Exactly... but apparently Snitker got the same number of 1st place votes as Skip so I dunno.

I never saw the numbers totals - I just won't ever understand that.

So in the AL, Hyde got a unanimous win going from 83 to 101 wins, but the team with 69 wins to 83 and playoffs isn't unanimous?  Ok.....

It wouldn't be any better if they were stacked. You'd have to have them loose. Also the sheer amount of paper cuts and subsequent infections from how dirty paper money is would be like a game from "Saw".

I don't want to play that game.

@SilverBullet add another to the list, I even got this wrong

Snitker 8 first place votes, 2 for 2nd place, 3 for 3rd place

Skip got 8 first place votes, 8 2nd place votes, and 8 3rd place votes
