Marlins Interested in Cordero, El Duque?

Featured Replies

? Sources say the Marlins have expressed interest in free agent Wil Cordero, who hit .278 with 16 homers and 71 RBI for Montreal last season. Cordero, a right-handed hitter, could platoon with new Marlins first baseman Hee Seop Choi, a lefty hitter, or play full-time if Choi struggles.

? The Marlins will be among the teams in attendance when free agent pitcher Orlando ''El Duque'' Hernandez works out for scouts at FIU this week. Hernandez, who's 53-38 lifetime but missed last season because of shoulder surgery, is worth a look from Florida, which needs better options than Michael Tejera and Kevin Olsen as a fifth starter until A.J. Burnett recovers from elbow surgery.

Wouldn't be a bad signing at all. He would provide the insurance some here would like if Choi can't do the job at 1B.

He can play a little corner outfield too, but has no arm at all. Put up some pretty solid numbers for the 'Spos last season once he became the full-time starter.

As long as he doesn't beat his wife anymore he's fine....

I'm more excited about El Duque than Cordero.

Our bench is solid, not great, but guys like Banks, Mordecai, Harris, etc. are there and all solid. Our pen needs more help than the bench, and El Duque as a healthy fifth starter is great for me...

Does anyone have clue whatsoever when and what time will El Duque be at FIU?

I gave a suggestion that Cordero could be coming to be a good bench player since he can play 1B and OF. He used to be a shortstop, remember? 1994 seems so long ago.

Orlando Hernandez would be a good pickup, now if only we could get Livan... :mischief2

He plays in a league there at tamiami with his brother and other ball players................

it's usually on saturday mornings.

If we're going after Cordero, why not Karros, who is a definite upgrade over Cordero and shouldn't cost us too much more than Cordero.

Cordero gives us a lot more flexibility, being able to play the outfield along with first base. Karros is a one dimensional player. He plays first base and nothing else.

I don't mind this at all. It gives us a chance to rest players like Niner, put Banks in left, and Cordero at first if Choi doesn't perform well or needs to rest...

Cordero sounds good. I think the Marlins are looking to offer him somethng similar to what they offered Hollandsworth last year and Mondesi this year, a one-year one million deal.

Olsen is a big possibility as the fifth starter to begin the season. He should most definately be on the 40-man roster at the beginning of the season, and is most likely not on it now due to the hit he took in Boston. He was probably never put back on it after being removed.

Cordero might be a good pickup at the right price (at or under the $600k he made last season) if for no other reason he might be a good bargaining chip coming into the summer trading deadlines. While the Marlins are stocked to the gills with firstbasemen real and imagined, come July he could be a valuable commodity for the right team.

As for El Duque, it's been so long since I've seen him pitch, and with no one knowing how he's recovered from his injury, it's impossible to form an intelligent opinion. Whatever Admin B. and the FO decides works for me.

Ditto for Karros. Either would be a fine pickup.

I don't like Cordero that much but yeah I will take him and sure why not take el duque but see what's up with maddux first and spend that money wisely.

Olsen big possibility?? --- :lol

Phrase of the Day: "Brian Banks Blows."

If both players come cheap, then pick them up ASAP. They would give us depth we really need. Our bench needs more help, especially in the OF department. Hopefully Damion Easley will help the IF.

Damien Easley is a good player and I think he will help alot in the infield when he plays not like that bum Andy Fox.
