The Good from Opening Day
14/30 teams scored 2 or fewer runs in their first game this year. I know our offense isn't hyped up to be one of the best, but still, it's a little ridiculous to overreact from one game against an NL Cy Young candidate. Overreaction is what we do best.

Post game MIA @ WAS 4-1-2013
Meh, the 2012 Marlins looked exactly the same on Opening Night. They looked worse. Actually that's true. Lohse was no-hitting us. We were no hit for 18 ABs after that JP lead off single today I was actually giddy on Pierre's hit in the first-just said aloud "at least we can't get no hit".

4/1 - Marlins @ Nationals - 1:05 PM (Opening Day)
A shutout, who would have guessed that?

4/1 - Marlins @ Nationals - 1:05 PM (Opening Day)
Which ones haven't you heard of? Haven't really been following the off season. Serious question though, what happened to Lomo? You are so lucky it is opening day and everyone is in a festive mood-a question like that could get you in deep trouble normally.

Eovaldi, Alvarez to the DL; Jose Fernandez called up
Man, I thought this was an illegal early April fools day thread, and now it is confirmed to be real. Why not-what else can go wrong-the curse of Loria.

My Season Preview
I'm sure Admin knows that people will disagree-and believe it or not, there is substantial justification for that-but why not label everyone in advance, that promotes objective discussion.

Forbes: MLB teams' worth up 23%-marlins up 16%
At least you are finally coming over.

Miguel Olivo Signed
Oh, I see. That makes sense, but I'm not so sure that it's necessarily true. Either way, that's a very minor aspect of the catcher's defense. Olivo's inability to block balls in the dirt, however, is not so minor. It's not very comforting for young pitchers wanting to work on breaking stuff to have a horrid backstop. But it was fun anticipating the collision when Olivo was immovable-even if he didn't catch the ball and it was at the backstop.

¡GORKYS! Traded?
He's not worth much so don't expect too much for him This is the Venezuelan League batting champion-you know.

Forbes: MLB teams' worth up 23%-marlins up 16%
"Despite the much-publicized shedding of its top players, the Miami Marlins are worth $520 million this year, up 16 percent from last year. The team was worth $360 million in 2011, before it was awarded its new stadium." http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/9104778/forbes-mlb-teams-see-historic-23-percent-surge-average-values

Starting rotation set
There's definitely no star power in this rotation, but there are definitely a few guys who have a lot of upside. Namely Eovaldi and Alvarez. But LeBlanc and Slowey could put up respectable numbers as well. And we already know what we're getting with Ricky. 4 tremendous outings. 4 horrendous outings. Then a bunch of average ones. Each game he starts we ask the question: Is it Good Ricky or Bad Ricky tonight?

Home Opener on Groupon
Very smart move. The average yield from food, liquor, merchandise and parking is more than average gate yield, based on full-price tickets. See post #21 on: http://forums.marlinsbaseball.com/topic/98176-marlins-revenue-and-operating-expenses-some-facts/ Giving away tickets may not attract the biggest spenders, but they're certainly better than nothing. Then again, they're in on a free ticket, so they might be even more inclined to spend on other stuff making them better than the average paid admission when it comes to bottom-line profit. Butts in the seats. Name of the game. A seat with no butt in it can't buy a beer or a hot dog or a parking spot or a hat or anything else. Hard to understand why "fans" would disparage something (or, for that matter, anything) that increases revenue above what it would otherwise have been. Because short term benefits become long term detriments. Like rebates, customers stop buying and wait for the giveaways. You will then possibly lose the regular paying customers, the season ticket holders etc, who wonder why they should pay while the guy sitting next to them got in for free.

Home Opener on Groupon
The national baseball media should have fun with this. " Miami Marlins Home Opener Miami Marlins — Marlins Park 12 miles from Home The Marlins dive into the second season in their new ballpark against NL East rival Atlanta Braves View Deal $77 $45 "

Further Alienation of Fan Base?
Last year we had a railing blocking our view. For some reason the railing, which was all around the stadium in the Vista boxes, was only higher right in front of my seats. The Marlins explained that the original plans had a staircase in that row, but when it was completed the seats butted up to the side, thus, the higher railing was meant for a stairway. I tried to get used to it but it obstructed my view. The Marlins offered me multiple seat change options, but I liked the location so I told them I am OK. Someone went to look at it and agreed with me and viola, one night we got the to stadium and they changed the railing to a lower one. So there, I bash Loria, but the guys in customer service bent over backwards to make it right.

Turner's struggles
odd - it was only a month or so with the Marlins but Turner's command seemed really strong last season. Still, 3 walks in 3 innings isn't a meltdown or anything - yeah he needs to go right after guys in AAA but I mean losing his spot - that would be a mistake imo. Hopefully Red just trying to spark him a little. he's got a few more outings, plenty of time to clean it up. Hope he turns it around, but it would be worse not to send him down if he continues to struggle. He is too young to try to fight through it and figure it out at this level, that would be a mistake.

Hugo Chavez has died
Doubtful anyone's opinions change based on comments and references to agenda driven articles. No where is there a mention that Venezuela has also achieved high status based on one of the highest crime rates in the Western Hemisphere. Increases and high incidences of rape, murder and kidnappings. Violent crime has tripled in the past decade. Was he the monster most Americans think?-I guess I take the view that we do not have to always apologize for who we are, so I ask, is America the monster that Chavez continually pointed to in order to unite the masses against the common enemy? Also, unlikely, but maybe his constant hatred towards America is a reason that Americans tended to not like him, along with his courting of Libya, Iran and other tyrannical regimes. I may be a good person but if I singled you out to condemn and attack, would you like me anyways when I tell you all the good things I do? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_Venezuela

The Official Giancarlo Stanton Man Crush Thread
“I’ve never seen anything like it, Mark Teixeira said when asked about Stanton’s batting practice session, “I’ve played with a lot of guys headed for the Hall of Fame, but I’ve never seen anything like it. Stanton reportedly sent towering home runs into the parking lot behind the Arizona Diamondbacks’ spring training facility. The cars were parked well beyond the fence, but the slugger came close to hitting them. "I think I was OK because my car is in Tampa, Teixeira said. “Although, with the right wind, he still might be able to hit it. Jimmy Rollins was also amazed by the power Stanton displayed. You cannot be real. You cannot be human. Stanton heard it all day at the USA workout. http://Adminbrownsports.com/baseball/giancarlo-stanton-wows-jimmy-rollins-mark-teixeira-with-power/177698 makes you sick to think that we have someone described like this by his peers and we can only look forward to very soon hearing "the prospects we got back for Stanton are well known by people who know baseball-unlike you people. We are really up there in the minor league rankings. That guy we got back, you know, the second baseman, what, and the first baseman, who, well I know who they are-even if I do not know their names."

Marlins revenue and operating expenses - some facts
Loria is a crook. he's a not forthcoming with information regarding his finances, is s*** at running a ballclub, regularly breaks promises, shits on the fans, has already destroyed one MLB franchise, and above all he's fat. and wears red sunglasses. I hate him. everyone else should too. He's a dumbass and needs to get out of town. Isn't it really the closet full of vertical striped shirts that bother you most? At least I hope it is a closet full instead of the same one.

First base
Plus Kotch has less playing time just cuz he was set back a week with the finger injury. I'd rather have Kotch and just use Mahoney as AAA depth, which we'll probably need anyways eventually. And if Mahoney does real well in the minors, we can move up the rankings of minor league systems and maybe be ranked #1 if we win the coaches poll. Do we get a banner if we do?

Richard Justice on 790 this morning
I dont think this was good radio at all, and i get the impression justice was upset he answered 10 minutes of marlins questions instead of talking about MLB as a whole with some marlins. I thought it was fun to listen to, instead of the usual silly games they play, like "remember when" or "hocked off". If, after all that has happened down here, Justice thought it would be about MLB with a little Marlins thrown in, then that is on him. Who knows what passes as "good" anymore for anything-more like whatever keeps your interest for a few minutes.

Richard Justice on 790 this morning
Wow glad to hear a positive spin on things but he supported "everything?" Really? Wow. Yea, he went on about how excellent the marlins staff has been, the scouting, the player development and that Beinfest is one of the top baseball minds. That is when it got interesting with Zaz and Hoch questioning the failure of the top draft picks etc.
-
Richard Justice on 790 this morning
Sure many of you heard this, but if not, it was really good radio. Justice supported the marlins on everything, said the value received was excellent, but later said he does not know much about the minor leagues. Also, started out saying he loves David Samson. Towards the end, Zas and Hoch took issue with him and it got nasty. If the link does not work, then it is online on 790's site. http://www.theticketmiami.com/mornings.aspx

about the Cubs but fits the Marlins
This is an interesting read, given our current state of affairs-I put this in our Marlins section because of the similarites. The big difference is that in a few years when the kids become stars, the cubs will pay them. http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/02/26/3256207/david-haugh-cubs-president-will.html

Loria's letter to the fans
wow so it was cut short, okay, why call one if you're not ready for the heat? hand picked reporters and all. Every local sports reporter basically was there. How is that hand picked? He didn't cut it short, his PR guy did if you watch the footage. He was ready for another question. So, that was not his fault either. Who is the owner-Loria or the PR guy. Sorry, if Loria did not want to cut it short, he could have simply said, "no, let's stay-next question". He didn't.
