Marlins accept OB site
It makes no sense for the city and county to cover cost overruns. All along the Marlins have agreed to cover the overruns including during the previous version of the OB stadium. This is just another way of reducing their contribution. The previous version of the OB stadium was based on a $60 million state subsidy, revenue from a parking garage, and a less expensive stadium. You are comparing apples to oranges. So your point is that the city and county should cover the $30 million (not $60 million) state subsidy and that the city and county should cover all the increases in the construction costs over the past 3 yaers? I hope the city and county leaders are not as stupid as you want them to be. On the parking garage, IIRC, in the previous OB deal the parking garage would be pay for itself with the parking revenues.. the Marlins were not getting the parking revenues.

What Movie(s) Did You Watch Today?
I watched The Hill. It's a '65 film about a WWII British military prison in North Africa directed by Sidney Lumet starring Sean Connery. A couple of the prison guards made Colonel Saito look like a nice guy. Supposedly the movie is pretty realistic as to how things were. Good movie.

A-Rod / Marlins Rumor Talk
ARod dumped the Yankees, not the other way around. ARod is not bad for baseball in any way. It would be stupid for a team to pay him $25 million or $30 million but that's not his fault. If a team pays him that much it would be stupid and it would be bad for the team that pays it but that doesn't means ARod is bad for baseball. Stupid GMs are bad for baseball. Great players are good for baseball. If you want to argue semantics, by Arod's decision to opt out of his existing contract, the Yankees made it official that they would not pursue. Which is a mutual break up. However, that doesn't change the fact that they dumped/shed/expunged/insert-word-of-choice-here all that money. Okay, I might have been harsh by saying AROD is bad for baseball, but the point remains that an Arod contract IS bad for baseball. Read my later post which does a pretty good job of explaining the dollars and cents. Giambi and Jeter made $23.4 million and $21.6 million this year, respctively. Are their contracts bad for baseball? As I said before it would be stupid to pay ARod $25 million a year but ARod at $25 million is a much better deal than Giambi at $23.4 million or Jeter at $21.6 million. http://asp.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/sa....aspx?year=2007

A-Rod / Marlins Rumor Talk
Yes, by allowing us to trade Cabrera for some serious arms Who's buying? Also, the market isn't fraught with talented FA pitchers. I'd also like to know how signing ARod would FREE UP money for anyone?? [scratches head] Last time I checked, the Yankees - the evil empire/deepest pockets in sports - just dumped ARod's salary. Who do you think will win in a bidding situation for the 1 or 2 good arms that will become available? The DRays? I still think ARod is bad for baseball. No team can afford to pay the guy what he is worth and still field a team with quality pitchers. Marlins accept OB site
I think Marlins2003 is right that the Marlins won't be offering to pay for cost overruns. And like fawouls' said, this makes sense as it's the city and county that chose this awful site, not the Marlins. If the Marlins offer $205K or $215K they are being very generous. It makes no sense for the city and county to cover cost overruns. All along the Marlins have agreed to cover the overruns including during the previous version of the OB stadium. This is just another way of reducing their contribution.

U.S. Dollar Drops Below Canadian Dollar
Since 9/13 the dollar has devalued 10% vs the Canadian Dollar. Some of it has to do with the Canadian Dollar appreciating vs other currencies but still.

Question about Joe Girardi and His problems here.
The root for the feud was that Beinfest wanted Fredi to be the manager but Loria overruled him and hired Girardi. Girardi wasn't the puppet type that Beinfest wanted and because of it they didn't see eye to eye on things from the get go, such as disagreements over the makeup of the coaching staff, so things between the FO and Girardi started off on the wrong foot and got worse from there with the FO doing their finest to undermine Girardi at every opportunity. This is correct. Don't remember Jack being a puppet. Maybe that's why Beinfest wanted to fire him during the '05 season but unfortunately Loria overruled him and the firing, or the "retiring" if you prefer, did not occur until after the season.

College Football Discussion Week 10
I know we expect FSU, Florida and Miami to be better than they are now, but right now we have six out of seven I-A schools with winning records, and UCF and FAU still have conference hopes. This is a pretty good year for Florida I-A football. :mischief I think this season UM, FSU and Florida will probably have more combined losses than any other season the past 25 or so seasons so I don't think this is a good year for Florida football and I don't see things getting better for either FSU or UM in the near future. if you believe the hype that is local high school recruiting...then things at UM will be looking up before you know it I think HS recruiting is very important but so is the coaching of the recruits once you get them in and although I've read or heard about 11000 times from the local media what a great job of recruiting Shannon is doing when I look at where 3rd parties rank his '08 class (7th on rivals.com / 4th on scouts.com) I laugh at the homer talk coming out of South Florida because that's more or less where UM usually ranks so Shannon's class although good it's nothing special for UM standards and I don't think Shannon and Nix are particularly good coaches. UM wont be good until they get a good QB. Next year Kirby will still suck and although I've read about 20000 times how great Marve will be the bottom line is no one has any idea if he'll be any good given that QB recruits are very difficult to predict and he wasn't even that highly rated coming out of HS (10th highest rated QB).

Mike Lowell 2007 WS MVP
Lowell's contract wasn't a bad contract at all. It was $32 million over 4 years. That's pretty fair for the player he is and he had 3 good years and one bad one. His OPS+ over the contract was 109.

Do you wad or fold your toilet paper?
People think I'm nuts when I come out of the bathroom with the paper towel I just used to dry my hands. I refuse to touch the handle after I've washed my hands because I know there are tons of people (both men and women - men can just drip dry yuck!) who wipe, pull up their drawers and walk out. I always do the exact same thing. I have no interest whatsoever in touching a door handle that was just touched by some guy who just pissed or crapped without washing his hands which is what many if not most men do. What I think is weird is that most men have no reservations about touching dirty door handles.

Marlins ballpark faces new funding gap
If I recall correctly the previous OB deal called for a parking garage but the parking revenues would be used to pay for the parking garage. From what I recall the Marlins weren't getting the parking revenues but maybe they were getting some of it and it just wasn't reported in the media. I guess this means we're not getting ARod, Bonds and Posada as was speculated is several threads.

Willis likely to Return in '08
I don't agree with the Zambrano / Olsen comparison. I think Zambrano continues to be a headcase but he's a top notch pitcher in spite of it because he has GREAT stuff. I look at Olsen as a headcase with mediocre stuff.

Uggla to 3B in 2009??
His Fielding % playing 3B in the minors was .929 which is pretty bad. Just for comparison, in MLB this year only Ryan Braun had a lower one.

Uggla to 3B in 2009??
I think his arm is too inaccurate for the long throws from 3B. If he plays 3B I think he would lead the league in errors.

Uggla to 3B in 2009??
Posted: Sunday October 21, 2007 08:43AM ET If the Marlins deal Miguel Cabrera, one idea that intrigues them (for 2009) is moving Dan Uggla to third and using Single A prospect Chris Coghlan at second. But Coghlan -- whom Marlins advisor Jack McKeon predicts will be a good big-league hitter -- isn't close to being ready Does Uggla even have the arm to play 3rd? No.

A-Rod / Marlins Rumor Talk
I love offseason dreams followed by spring training reality.. it starts with Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez, ends with Alex Sanchez and Joe Borchard. :lol I heard somewhere that Chase Utley is close to inking a multi year deal with us No way. Uggla > Utley. Utley just had the luckier year.

Moneyball is wrong
Noone will be right all the time but in his 10 years as GM the A's have averaged 90 wins with relatively low payrolls. I think that's pretty good. 2007 AL West 76-86 (.469) 2006 AL West 93-69 (.574) 2005 AL West 88-74 (.543) 2004 AL West 91-71 (.562) 2003 AL West 96-66 (.593) 2002 AL West 103-59 (.636) 2001 AL West 102-60 (.630) 2000 AL West 91-70 (.565) 1999 AL West 87-75 (.537) 1998 AL West 74-88 (.457)

Hanley named NL's best SS by his peers
Yeah, he kind of had a down year for his standards. I was expecting his OBP to be higher. He had his 2nd highest OBP, his 2nd highest SLG and had career highs in RBIs and HRs so it's ridiculous to say he had a down year.
-
Moneyball is wrong
I never read the book but I've heard Billy Bean on interviews and from listening to him I think his philosophy is to go after players or types of players whose abilities are undervalued in the current market. I think that's a winning philosophy. So for example if players with high OBP were undervalued in the market and he could get them on the cheap then he would go after them but if players with high OBP were overvalued in the market and he had to overpay to get them then he wouldn't go after them.

Chris Chambers Dealt to San Diego Chargers
This is just the beginning I hope you're right, but today is the deadline. Anyone know what time the deadline is? I think it was 43 minutes ago.
