  1. Sounds like a soccer trade. The Dutch born Hurk for the German born Ohman.
  2. Houston will move lefty Wandy. He's due just a couple million the rest of the way. We have an hour and a half.
  3. Here's hoping that Luna steps in at third from day one and wins the job for next season.
  4. I have written off Maybin as a potential contributor. That ship has sailed. Send him to the Orioles or Pirates.
  5. When you pull the plug on a manager the way the Marlins did with FG, you have to assume that changes are wanted, don't you? What has been going on since Rodriguez took over is the opposite of that. Players on the field, unchanged. Batting order, basically unchanged ... unless you see special significance in flipflopping Stanton and Paulino or Uggla and Cantu. I see no significance in either move. Pitching .... exactly the same, silly system. Hensley in the eighth and Nunez in the ninth, with whoever filling in the 6th and/or 7th. Sanchez/etc. Doesn't matter if Hensley has a six-pitch eighth. You burn Nunez in the ninth regardless. Basically, it would appear that FG left his lesson plan attached to the dugout wall and Rodriguez has followed it to the letter.
  6. Just a straight whiff on my part. Frank was great.
  7. I watched the game last night and was surprised to hear FRANK pinch hitting for Tommy Hutton. Well, huge props to FRANK! I thought he did an oustanding job. And not to pick on anybody (I'll watch the Marlins regardless of who is announcing), but I think FRANK is the best of the three.
  8. Edwin is a short-timer for sure. He intentionally walked CHIPPER JONES with two out and a runner on second and Marlins leading by a single run in the 8th inning last night. Chipper Jones, who can no longer bat his weight, and you walk him. Crazy stuff. I've never seen a .235 hitter put on base as a potential winning run before.
  9. This season is only over if: 1) The Marlins continue to parade Nate Robertson out to the mound every fifth day (the Tigers are paying him $10 million NOT to pitch for them this season!) ... 2) My guy Stanton continues to take all the fast balls down the middle for strikes and flail at everything that sails wide of the plate ... 3) Hanley continues to have so many poor at bats with runners on base. I support trading Uggla and Maybin to the Mariners for Cliff Lee.
  10. cornfield just jizzed his pants. That's rather tackily put, but I certainly am pleased.
  11. A new manager will mean changes ... or why change managers? Will these changes be significant or subtle? What do you hope they will be? I'd like to see 1) A change in the batting order. Hanley's hasn't been there in the clutch but he is running more. He's the top stolen base threat and the guy you'd like to see get the most at bats. Sooo, Hanley to leadoff with Coghlan, the lefty, hitting where he belongs in the two hole. Sanchez is hitting well and seems like a natural for the three spot. Cantu, despite travails of late, stays at the four hole by default. The rest of the lineup you could put in any order. 2) I'd package Uggla and Maybin in a deal for Cliff Lee and a good young pitcher from the Mariners. Cliff Lee is one and done, in all liklihood, but if the owner feels like the Marlins should be winning the division this year, he does this. The Mariners need offense and Uggla can provide a little of that. The Mariners do have a good number of capable young pitchers to include in such a deal. Coghlan moves to second base and their are better options than Maybin in the Marlins system to fill the last outfield spot. 3) Showcase a bullpen full of pitchers that don't walk people. Bringing up Sanabia, as the Marlins just did, should be the ticket.
  12. So, you are telling me that 1) the Marlins don't need to get better or 2) you are comfortable with Volstad and Nolasco?
  13. 23 year old pitcher Alejandro Sanabia continues to toil in AA at Jacksonville while Nolasco and Volstad continue to get lit up a bit for the Marlins. How does a struggling rotation not need Sanabia.? His ERA is a sparkling 1.86 and his WHIP is .88. Volstad never produced numbers like that at AA before coming up to the Marlins. Before the season gets away altogether, it's time to give minor league pitchers like Sanabia some run. Sanabia is on the mound tonight for Jacksonville.
  14. Stanton should have been put in three hole from day one, with Hanley leading off. Stanton was arguably the best hitter in Spring Training and has been all year.
  15. Doesn't anyone feel that Sanabia is ready for the rotation or bullpen? His numbers are outstanding and he's 23.
  16. 30 homeruns for Stanton in the bigs this season ... and 70 rbi's. And .270 avg. And .380 on base %. And top four in rookie of the year voting.
  17. Why is Sanabia getting no notice? His numbers are near Strasburg's and Strasburg is arriving in the majors tonight to the accompaniment of marching bands.
  18. NEWSFLASH: STANTON IS NOT GOING TO HIT A HOMERUN EVERYTIME UP. I think you people need to get that through your heads. And why so much hate for Maybin? He is good in center (except for that play in the perfect game) and he has been getting some key hits lately, plus he is fast. Maybin was given a fair opportunity to show his potential in the majors. It's just not there. He could possibly carve out a marginal career with some clubs maybe, but he's not part of a really competitive club. He makes too little contact, doesn't walk, and cannot convert speed into stolen bases.
  19. Regarding yesterday, Nolasco should've stayed in the game. However...I never thought I'd say this about one of your post, but I agree...somewhat. I don't see why in a particular situation like yesterday's, Clay Hensley can't come in in the 6th inning. He could probably be stretched out in a game like yesterday's, as well. Former starter + there's a day off today. Would've been better than using a horrible reliever in Tim Wood for multiple innings. All managers are like this though, as you said. Been saying it for awhile. Regarding the saves...if you use both in save situations and they're both racking up saves, they're both going to get raises in salary. So I don't get your logic there. Yo, Erick, how could you disagree with ME? I've called for Stanton to come into the lineup and Maybin out of it. I've called for Hanley to lead off. All these calls have drawn disparagement from some contribtors to this forum. However, that's all happened ... albeit later than it should have. Now we just need Sanabia to replace Robertson in the rotation and work from there. As to the closers, 15 saves will not merit a pitcher a contract for $10 million a year. 40 saves often will. Hensley's qualifications as a closer are pretty close to Nunez right now ... based on their statistical performance thus far in the season.
  20. I'm not picking on the Marlin manager in particular here, but maybe more it's an indictment against most. Example in point: the bottom of the sixth inning on Sunday vs. the Mets. Nolasco is in trouble with one out and the bases full of Mets. The Marlins hold a 5-1 lead. Out with Nolasco (no problem there) and in with Tim Wood (huge problem there). At this very key juncture in the game, Gonzales brings an entirely unproven pitcher into the game. He had Hensley in the pen. He had Nunez. But no, Hensley pitches only the eighth inning. Nunez pitches only the ninth with a lead of three runs or less (SAVE situation). You have to come with the best pitcher you have in that situation. You have to. My choice would have been Hensley. If a manager basically has his pitching decisions predetermined and carved in stone, what do you even need a manager for? Let the equipment manager read the stone and follow the "rules". This whole "my eighth inning guy and my closer" thing is really pretty absurd. The game was on the line in the bottom of the sixth ... you go with your best. Following through on that, why can't a pitcher that was effective in the eighth inning without throwing a bunch of pitches also throw in the ninth? Most everyone I've ever known that pitched would prefer to warm up and throw 20 or 30 pitches every other day rather than go through the process of warming up and throwing 15 pitches on each of consecutive days. As far as closing games goes, why put the same guy out there in every save situation when a result of that is making him unaffordable when it comes time to re-sign the guy (35 or 40 saves is a huge bargaining chip in salary negotiations)? If Hensley and Nunez are basically equal in effectiveness, why not spread the saves between them? Managers seem to operate by a bunch of arbitrary "rules" that we have all become accustomed to by now. Bottom line? Judgement is taken out of play .... and judgement is what you should be paying managerial dollars for.
  21. Hanley leadoff .... not producing in the three hole, maybe this helps. Coghlan ... a natural two hitter Sanchez ... swinging the bat pretty well .. good discipline Cantu ... leading the league in rbi's Stanton ... because Uggla and Cody strike out even more ... Paulino ... making more consistent contact than Uggla Uggla Ross
  22. I think people aren't quite getting what Maybin and Coghlan's ceilings are. I think maybin's ceiling is higher, but CC is safer. Right now, I guess CC stays up. I prefer keeping Maybin up for defense/utility's sake, but it's gotta be based on merit. I hate CC's approach right now, though. It's not an easy choice. Bye, bye Maybin. Coghlan is a left handed bat in a lineup that has just one ... him. Maybin never panned out. Oh, Stanton just hit two more dongs tonight.
  23. The Marlins hitters take far too many fastball, called strike one, pitches. The first pitch is often the best they see. I want to see aggressive swings at first pitch fastballs and far fewer flailing swings at low and outside sliders when they have two strikes.
  24. Just another really great start from Sanabia last night.
  25. Strasburg was born 7/20/88. 1.06 era in 34 innings. 14 hits, just 8 walks and 40 K's. Sanabia was born 9/8/1988. 1.42 era in 44 innings at Jacksonville. 29 hits, just 11 walks and 39 K's. Alejandro Sanabia starts for the eighth time this season tonight. I hope to see him with Los Marlins soon.
