Yea, some minor issues like making contact with the baseball.

lol.

He is currently hitting in 197 AB, .254/.359/.447 (.806) with 9 HR, 31/73 BB/K, and 13/2 SB. He is obliterating lefties (.980 OPS) and struggling a bit more against righties (.741 OPS, 59 of the K). He also does not like to hit at home (home .700 OPS, away .898).

In April he hit in 89 AB, .225/.367/.371 (.738), 3 HR, 19/37 BB/K, 5/2 SB

In May he hit in 104 AB, .260/.339/.442 (.781), 4 HR, 12/35 BB/K, 8/0 SB

Yesterday, he was 3/4, 2 HR, K

Overall, this is great for a 21 year old first time in double AA. We don't need to be taking jabs at him for the strikeouts. It is the first time he has ever seen real breaking pitches, and it is totally normal. Things are looking good even if we don't see him with the big club in 2008. It's only a matter of time.

I saw him hit a 500 foot bomb a while ago visiting my friend in college and it was ridiculous. He is talented but yea he does have problems hitting the breaking ball. But he will reach the major league level and he will be quite good. He is amazing defensively and he has power, but he just cant see the breaking ball. He hits thefastball very well though

Jay Bruce is also 21, so age is not the prime factor. No jab at him, I can wait for him to develop and he could be all that is expected of him. It is just a fact that currently he is striking out a lot. Your lefty/righty split info is very interesting. The only question there, and I can look it up, is how many of his 197 AB is against lefties. That would create a better picture of his success against them.

Truth is Maybin needed this year in the minors and might need another in the minors before he is ready.

For sure, but I expect him opening day 09 in center field. We won't send him to AAA, so as long as he shows even small improvement the second half of the year in AA (which I find very likely), I think that will be it. We are always aggressive with our prospects and level jumps. Just look at Hanley, Hermida, giving Uggla 2B out of AA (ignoring Rule V thing here), moving Coghlan to Carolina when he was horrible at Jupiter, all of the pitchers who routinely come up from Jupiter/Carolina, etc. I think giving him this year in Carolina is wonderful. Two is pushing it. He will really have to look horrible to not come up.

It's the LD% and GB% that concerns me, not the K's

when those go to acceptable levels I'll start believing

Cameron got 2 hits today, 1 homer and 1 single. I guess what.... NO strikeouts.

In his last 36 AB's he has stuck out 7 times and walked 3 times. He is coming along :thumbup.

Yep. In his last ten games he is hitting .417 w/ 5 HRs and only 7 K's. Good to see. His OPS is now at .880 which is good for 7th in the league AND of the 6 players ahead of him, he is the youngest and probably plays the best defense while playing a premium position.

So yea...Cameron Maybin will be fine. I hope we call him up this year when it works out with the arby clock.

I see the same problem to a lesser extent with Travis Snider.

Cameron Maybin was just named player of the week for the Southern League for the week ending June 9th.

Southern League

Cameron Maybin, Carolina

.400 (10-25), 6 R, 2 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 3 BB, 4 SO, 0 SB, 1.000 SLG

The Marlins blue-chip prospect is enjoying a nice two weeks, with his batting average up to its highest point since April 23. He has done so by hitting safely in 13 of his last 14 games, including all six contests on the week. Maybin's week started in prime fashion last Monday, when the center fielder fell just a double short of the cycle in a Mudcats loss to Montgomery. Maybin got his double, and another single the next day, and then closed out the series against Montgomery with another triple on Wednesday. Moving back home against Jacksonville over the weekend, Maybin continued his brilliance, with home runs Friday and Sunday and a double on Saturday to keep his nine-game hit streak alive.

September will start the beginning of the Maybin Era as CF for the Marlins

If the kid puts in another month like this and continues to show selectivity and strike zone recognition (not to mention he's finally putting the bat ON the ball) he could be up before the end of July at the rate he's going.

I waffle back and forth on it, whether it's the right thing to do or not, but if the kid keeps this up and gets his average over .300 (his OBP is already at .367 and over .450 so far this month) and stays there, I don't think they will hestitate to make the call. I can give you all the reasons why maybe they shouldn't but I still think he'll be rewarded for what he's accomplished sooner rather than later.

I'd rather not see him up before August, especially if Hammer comes back healthy and Ross can keep hitting for power.

I agree, I rather not have Cam come up and sit on the bench. I dont want to see him unless he will be playing almost everyday.

Cam will be a sexy 3-hole hitter

not this year.

If his K rate is like that in the minors, and his average is at .260...he's not a 3 hitter at the big league level yet, that's for damn sure.

I'd give Maybin another year in the minors. I don't believe this team needs him. I believe Cody Ross should be starting EVERY DAY...he did well last year, and he's gotten hot since May. There's no reason to platoon him with Jacque Jones, now. See what Ross can do this year, everyday, and if Maybin is ready next year, trade Ross for a prospect, or keep him on the bench.
