Marlins pursuing Bengie Molina

Featured Replies

Thought this deserved it's own thread...

Considering the success Bengie Molina has had throughout his career against the Marlins makes it easy to understand why Florida is now coveting the Giants' catcher. MLB.com has learned that the Marlins have inquired about obtaining Molina in a trade. The asking price, however, may be more than the team is willing to pay. Still, Molina and the Marlins are a potential matchup worth watching the next few days. This season, Molina is 9-for-14 with four doubles, one homer and seven RBIs against the Marlins. For his career, the veteran catcher is 24-for-54 (.444). The Marlins are searching for catching help, especially now that Matt Treanor, on the DL since July 8, is seeing a specialist for his strained left hip.

The Giants have absolutely no hitting prospects, but they have the pitching. It would probably take a Logan Morrison/Coghlan/Raynor type prospect to get him, but I wonder if Mike Jacobs+one of Tucker/De La Cruz/Vanden Hurk would work. Molina would be awesome for us down the stretch.

I think maybe, a Tucker/Jacobs trade would work. Jake hitting two bombs today dosen't hurt right now, hopefully teams will like him a bit more after today. But I think it comes down to who we want more, Molina or Rhodes. We could get Rhodes and then a low-end catcher like Ross or Zaun, or we could get Molina and get a Ron Mahay.

the marlins are not going to do any trades except maybe Rhodes, every other offer they have asked for one of our top prospects, and i do not believe we are willing to part with any of them, I agree maybe a Tucker/Jacobs deal could work but then who do the Giants have to catch? I think they might want John Gall as well.

They can sign him for AAA once the season is over.

Why the hell would anyone want John Gall in a trade?

Slow. Not really THAT good. No thanks.

.282/.313/.421 in 368 plate appearances, not really THAT bad. And he is a contact hitter.

Villalona?

Jacobs and tucker for Molina? :lol I would rather have Treanor with a broken leg if we had to give up Jake for him...

No. They can keep Molina, if that's the case. Don't trade Tucker.

Molina would be great. His bat would absolutely help us a lot, particularly against teams that score a lot of runs.

They aren't going anywhere with the current roster. The inconsistency of this team shows they that they are missing the pieces to put them over the top. And you aren't going to win without giving up something. Right now we lack a major league quality catcher.

:Clap :lol

The surprising thing regarding Molina is the amount of salary they would be taking on.

But then again it's probably putting the cart before the horse because we have no real idea what's being discussed and who the players going back in the exchange and whether the Giants take on part of his salary as part of acquiring a number of quality prospects/players.

Let's give the Giants Rick Vanden Hurk and De la Cruz.

Yeah, I can only wish they would take that. However, I'm betting that they will laugh at us if we offer that for Molina.

yea seriously lets give em hurk rabello and de la cruz for benji and some pitcher

Having a hitting catcher who can play the position as well... would simply complete our lineup, and have the only one hole spot at 1st... if Molina was added to our attire... we would be unstoppable at bat.

I don't see 1st as a ridiculously glaring hole. Catcher obviously needs an upgrade, but I wouldn't overpay for any of the backstops currently available. I would look at Jacobs for Molina an even deal. The Giants also demanding a pitching prospect should kill the deal immediately.
