I think he should. As for his crappy CS% look at waht he has o work with in our pitchers non are good at holding guys on really or have quich delevery. As for u guys think coghlan will be up i think he will stay one more year in the minors due to his D and we keep uggla one more year and put him in the line up at like the 5 or 6 spot.

He has earned it no doubt, that plate discpline it something we really need. He has showed he can hit and plays solid D, minus the CS %

Wow, I wasn't even aware that this one was up for debate. Baker has played at a very high level since he was brought up and he should absolutely be the starter in 2009.

My thoughts exactly. Baker is already the starting catcher now, and considering how good a job he's doing, putting up the best OBP on the team behind Hanley, I can't really imagine why anyone would think that there was a chance of anyone else being the starting catcher in 09. Especially on this team, which rarely ever makes a big signing to address an actual need, it would be crazy to think they would finally sign someone notable to play a position where we are finally solid, at least with the starter.

 

As for the backup catcher, I suppose I'd be fine with Treanor or Lo Duca, but I would prefer Lo Duca, just because even though he's not as good a hitter anymore, he is still much more the type of hitter to take Baker's spot in the lineup when he starts. If Treanor is the backup, then you need to reshuffle the lineup and find another #2 to move Treanor to the #8 spot. Duca can bat second though.

I agree Baker has earned at least a shot at starting next year. Maybe the Marlins can find a veteran guy to be the back-up or of push comes to shove keep Treanor. I like what Baker has done at the #2 spot but tradtionally catchers usually don't find that spot to often in the line-up, he does seem to be aware of how to bunt and advance runners.

Raynor's poor slugging % in the OF, can be made up with other areas in his game. Like...much improved defense, and a guy who can get on base. His career .OPS in the minors (3 years) is over .890.

 

Perhaps the SLG won't be on par with other corner outfielders...but doesn't that balance out, team wise? How many 2B can SLG like Dan Uggla (pending he stays next year)?

I'm starting to like him. He's the complete opposite of Miguel Olivo (who I disliked).

We'll probably sign a RH hitting catcher to compliment him, though.

 

i never hated olivo but he was always more of a backup or vs. lefties kind of catcher. although i agree that a right handed hitting catcher would work nicely alongside baker, maybe someone like michael barrett

I'm fine with them keeping him if he's cheap, but unless he has a really good ST I think he should start the season on the bench. Honestly, he's been a lazy defender and a black hole in the lineup by and large. Just my opinion, don't jump on me about how much potential he has. If he goes next year, I won't miss him, no matter what he does there.

That's the thing. He dosen't play solid defense. Far from it. I'm not sure if it's just his mechanics, which can be fixed, or if he's just unable to play the position. But I think it is safe to say the starting spot is his to lose next Spring.

Except poor cs%, Baker might be the answer. (I love his discipline at the plate.)

It will probably be someone young like Brett Hayes because he will make the minimum. With the way that our payroll will go up next season, they will have to cut corners everywhere. Besides, from what I have read, Hayes is very good defensively, and he can't be much worse than Treanor with the bat.

With Maybin in CF , Raynor would be the perfect LF. He gets on base and does have pretty good pop in his bat. Remember this team dragged Amezaga's laughable OPS through most of the season. I just Hope Hermida could bounce back because Cody is the perfect 4th OF. RF is the area of concern right now...Well untill Mr. Mike Stanton is ready to claim it

Keep it the way it is. Don't fix what's not broken.

Hermida will be in spring training, and the coaches will keep a close eye on his work ethic and improvement.

 

He is being benched now to send a message, and because what we got is working well.

 

I personally like LF Ross CF Maybin RF Hermida but that assumes Jeremy can live up to his potential (or close to it). Obviously if he is not performing, we will look elsewhere, likely to a prospect or maybe we acquire someone in a trade and make Herm the 4th OF.

 

The point is, we can only speculate at this point because spring training 2009 will be very important in terms of determining our lineup next year at nearly every position. It should be interesting and it is a lot of fun to speculate because we have a lot of young talent.

 

As far as the arbitration guys, i would like to see Cantu back. I think his corner d has been adequate and I think he fits in better with the team attitude than, say, Jacobs, Hammer, or even Uggla. Also, I do not think we can go into spring training counting on two rookies for our starting corner infeilders. Cantu provides insurance should Dallas or Gaby not perform.

 

A lot will have to do with who is the cheapest though. Thats how our front office thinks, but at least we got options.

I know he's another year (at least) out...but what happens to Gaby once Logan Morrison's ready? I'm really high on this kid.....amazing.
