"Kid" who caught Chris' first career HR

Featured Replies

Considering the amount of bats that break and hence teams have a high turnover of bats anyway, whats the problem with exchanging 2 bats for the ball?

For Marlins rookie Chris Coghlan, hitting his first big league home run wasn't half as difficult as getting the ball back.

Coghlan unloaded on a belt-high fastball from Milwaukee starter Braden Looper for a 403-foot, two-run homer in the first inning Wednesday night at Miller Park in what will always be a truly memorable moment for the 23-year old.

"I don't think I fully realized it until I got back into the dugout," Coghlan said. "It was a pretty cool feeling to hit my first one."

Understandably, Coghlan asked if the ball could be retrieved as a keepsake.

Video replay showed footage of an adult male reaching over the edge of Miller Park's Tundra Territory in right-center field and making a nifty backhanded catch with the glove. And that's when things got interesting.

"He wanted Yankees tickets, he wanted a Hanley [Ramirez] ball and a [Ramirez] bat and other things," Coghlan said. "I was just trying to be as polite as I could and be respectful. I only get one [first home run]. I wanted to get it and give it to my mom."

The fan is better known in Milwaukee as "The Happy Youngster" and boasts of catching 48 home run balls on his own blog, published on MLB.com. He refers to himself in his Web page as "Brew Town's Ballhawk".

"He wasn't the most polite or respectful guy about the process," Coghlan said. "I guess he goes around and catches these balls and holds them for ransom. I don't know if that's a profession or could even go down as one."

Coghlan offered the fan signed memorabilia and eventually had the ball returned when the Marlins assisted. Although it took more negotiating than originally expected, Coghlan was relieved to have the ball in his hands.

In his third full professional season, Coghlan is off to an impressive start. Coghlan batted .344 with nine doubles, one triple, three home runs and 21 RBIs in the first month of the season at Triple-A New Orleans before making his big league debut last Friday at Colorado.

After hitting just seven home runs last season at Double-A Carolina, Coghlan already has four this season, including Wednesday's first Major League homer.

"As soon as I hit it, with the direction where it was, I didn't think it was going to be high enough," Coghlan said. "I knew I hit it hard, but just not high. I was thinking [double] out of the box, and as I was rounding first, I knew it was going to be close. I put my head down and I looked back up and nobody was running. I was like 'Oh, my gosh, I just hit a home run.'"

Coghlan, a second baseman by trade, played only one game in the outfield at New Orleans before stepping in as the Marlins' starting left fielder.

"I feel comfortable out there," Coghlan said. "Everyone has really helped me."

Yeah the guy sounds like an a-hole. I would have tried to trick some how. Give him hit a bat not really signed by hanley.

Why is everyone ragging on the guy, i will bet most everyone would ask for something in return, some more than others, i don't see why we are calling the guy names.

Theres asking for certain things in trade, then theres being a dooshebag.

Yankee Tickets, A hanley Ball, A hanley bat, a basket of sausage and cheese is being a dooshebag. Especially when you want NOTHING from the guy who hit the ball.

Seriously, the least I would do is make the kid feel like a big league player and ask for his ball too.

And Yankees tickets, and a photo with Coghlan. AND then tried to hold to ball hostage. Chris had to beg for it.

MILWAUKEE -- Question to Chris Coghlan? What was harder, hitting your first home run or retrieving the ball?

Answer: "Getting the ball back, for sure."

Coghlan connected on his first major league home run on Wednesday at Miller Park. But trying to convince the fan who caught the ball to give it up proved a more difficult task.

In return for the ball, said Marlins bullpen coach Steve Foster, who was the lead negotiator,"he wanted everything. He wanted bats and all kinds of stuff."

Foster said he offered a couple of baseballs in a 2-for-1 swap, but the man refused, saying he also wanted a bat autographed by Hanley Ramirez.

"I told him no," Foster said.

The negotiations continued after the game, when the man was brought onto the field and waited for Coghlan outside the Marlins dugout. Coghlan was astonished by the man's demands.

Coghlan said the man demanded an autographed baseball by Coghlan, a personalized Coghlan bat, an autographed Ramirez bat and -- to top it all off -- tickets to the Yankees/Marlins series in South Florida in June. He also wanted his photograph taken with Coghlan, whose name the man mispronounced even though he pretended to be a fan by wearing a Marlins cap.

Coghlan said he finally managed to drive down the asking price to the photo, an autographed ball and one of his signed bats. But when Coghlan handed over the goods, "he wouldn't give me the ball."

Coghlan resorted to begging.

"I told him, 'It's my first one. I would really appreciate it,'" Coghlan said. "He didn't make it easy, that's for sure."

The man finally coughed up the memento, but Coghlan was left with a sour taste from the experience.

"If he had been more respectful about it, I would have given him anything he wanted," Coghlan said.

OK, I've changed positions. He's a dick.

Yankee tickets?

Wearing a Marlins hat to try and look like a Marlins fan is what puts him on total douche status to me

He actually always wears the opposing team's gear so that he can get them to throw him balls.

Also, I now see that it's Marlins tickets vs the Yankees at home. I was getting the impression that it was some random Yankee game.

Still a dick.

Let me ask this, if this happen in Landshark or what the name is, and we were playing the Mets or Philly and you caught the ball from a first timer, would you just give it back or would ask for something?

I'd ask for something, probably a signed ball.

The problem is both how much he asked for, what he asked for, and how he went about it. He finally had a deal with Coghlan and then backed out to try and get more. It's a sad state of affairs when you're making a rookie literally beg you for his first big league homer.

How was he holding the ball hostage?

The guy is probably bragging to his friends about his negotiating skills. Personally, I think he went over the top by making Chris "beg" for it. Right then, if I were Chris I may have walked away and told him to keep it, I would just send my mother another ball and a copy of the home run. It's your word against mine.

Pronouncing his name wrong?? I have no problem with that. I still find myself pronouncing it "cough-lin" from time to time. That's the way it looks.
