April 9, 201016 yr I think the potential for Tucker being a starter is all but gone, and I'm not sure Smolinski has a lot of trade value. But I agree, I wouldn't do it for just anyone. But there are a few names on there that, if healthy, would be good pickups.
April 9, 201016 yr nice. let's hope he continues to rake so we can bring him up. the question is what we do with our outfielders if this were to happen. trade cody, i guess? The way to clear room for Stanton, assuming no injuries, is to bench Gaby (or Morrison) and move Coghlan to 3B. Corner infield and LF defense our are biggest positional concerns, and that fixes the problem. You do not get rid of Cody. Secondly, you guys have far to high expectations of what Stanton is going to do right away. He is not going to out-produce a consistent veteran like Ross right now, or guys like Coghlan and Maybin who have taken their lumps throughout the system and have far more professional experience. There is no question, Stanton has the projection potential 4 years from now, but right now is a totally different story. It is very a rare a Hanley or Cabrera develops in your system. Don't be spoiled by this. Most guys struggle, like Hermida, A. Miller, or Maybin last year. They need time despite looking fantastic in the minors. These are kids, they are young. They need the work in the minors. Stanton 100% needs to be in AA for two months, then a promotion to AAA, and if he's still mashing during all of this, call him up on August 31st so he is eligible for post season rosters. And at that point of the season, if someone stinks, or is hurt, or isn't hitting, then maybe you can clear out a veteran for Stanton and give him a true cup of tea before Spring Training next year. That is a best case scenario. Stop the clamoring. Great Post! Couldn't agree more. Cannot rush young prospects. Stanton is going to be great by all reviews but definitely needs to spend a good year or year and a half on the farm.
April 9, 201016 yr The Marlins are very high on Logan Morrison. There's zero chance he gets traded. Don't be surprised if Uggla is dangled for pitching help again.
April 9, 201016 yr Lets say were in the hunt for the PO in late August and Maybin has just been atrocious. Stanton is in AA or AAA just raking do we call him up and move Cody to center with Stanton in right? I guess what I'm asking is how bad would Maybin have to play for him to get the bench? I think he's have to play horribly at the plate and in the field to see the bench this year. Sure. Why not. I think Maybin sucking for 2 months gets him shipped back to AAA, and the team calls up PETERSEN before Stanton. And then if Peterson sucks for a month, they reevaluate Maybin, Stanton, and Cousins as who gets the next shot. Stanton is literally way down the list despite having top potential of the group. That's my only concern. He isn't ready. Let him be in the minors! Late August tops even in a worst case scenario where all our outfielders struggle.
April 9, 201016 yr The Marlins are very high on Logan Morrison. There's zero chance he gets traded. Don't be surprised if Uggla is dangled for pitching help again. What I said was he's (Morrison) going to take Stanton's place this summer as the guy every team starts their talks with the Marlins about. Last season according to Beinfest no matter how big or small a deal was on the table somebody was demanding Stanton in it, that's not going to happen in 2010 and so you start moving down the prospect list and Morrison has to be right up there along with whatever young starter is doing well in AA or AAA.
April 9, 201016 yr The way to clear room for Stanton, assuming no injuries, is to bench Gaby (or Morrison) and move Coghlan to 3B. Corner infield and LF defense our are biggest positional concerns, and that fixes the problem. You do not get rid of Cody. As long as Sanchez keeps hitting with the authority he's showing (and Cantu as well) he's not getting benched or pushed off the scene for anyone and that includes Morrison who may find himself tradebait if they can't find a position for him to play and the team looks to reload this summer. In a choice between Morrison and Stanton there is no choice and no team will dare ask for Stanton in a trade so that leaves Morrison as the number one asked for player in any trade (assuming as I said he is playing up to expectations and even then I'm not saying the Marlins will trade him, I'm just saying he'll be involved in a lot of discussions) Cody will probably be the 4th outfielder if (a big "if") Stanton makes it impossible for the Marlins to keep him down any longer but the idea of a guy with questionable infielding skills and no major league experience (including two spring trainings) manning third part way through a pennant race is unrealistic. Sanchez has to slump big time or Cantu gets injured or one of the wheels falls off somewhere else for that extreme experiment to happen. Understand Cogs has proven he can do most anything he sets his mind to this is not a dig at him but if defense is an issue and we're in it this is not something you would expect would be done in the name of improving the club's ability to compete. Morrison should not be traded in any circumstance, unless the player coming back is something like Wade Davis (I am not advocating him, just that quality of arm) or another comparable SP prospect we would have for years. It is incredibly short sited to move any of our "kids" at this stage of the game, even if we need a piece down the road. The piece to move is Cantu, or as someone just said maybe Uggla. Take the risk. Go big, rely on your kids who have been top 40 prospects in baseball two years in a row. Like I said before that you didn't reply with above, a Hanley, Uggla, Ross, Baker/Paulino, and Coghlan team is going to be plus offensively in the NL. If Maybin, Morrison/Gaby, and say Stanton/Petersen hit on top of them, they will be awesome. The scenario is, if we NEED a pitcher, everyone is hitting as they should and expect, why trade Morrison - who we have for 6 years the second he comes up - if you think he can match Cantu's mild .800 production at the MLB level (which he should versus at least RHP), when you can just trade Cantu who you lose in free agency anyways? I agree, it's a risk that the kid performs, but at some point you have to trust your guys. My money is on a future with all our kids. Cantu, is a placeholder. He's very important right now, but if Stanton annihilates the minors, and Morrison or Gaby is/are ready to rock, Cantu becomes expendable really quick with a Coghlan shift to 3B. And really, Cantu is terrible at 3B and Coghlan is terrible in LF. Nothing, absolutely nothing, is lost defensively with this arrangement. In fact, the stronger argument is we actually get better because Stanton is thought of as an above average outfielder and we can't get worse at 3B. Let alone, if Morrison displaces Gaby (who I agree, looks phenomenal in his approach so I'm in no rush for that despite believing Morrison turns out better longterm), we shoot up in 1B defense as well. Huge hypothetical scenario so I don't think we need to go further until July 1st once we see where every lays, but all I'm saying is. We need to smartly contend and account for our future at the same time. If push comes to shove, Cantu is replaceable on this team based on Coghlan's ability to move to the infield, and that opens up a spot for Stanton if he tells the organization through performance it is his time come this July. Lots of ifs here, but I'm just saying. He is my favorite to go, and I think my argument on this one is very reasonable. Regardless, pretty sweet problem to have. Let's hope Natty Ice, Volstad, Anibal, or whoever else, can throw some good ball so this isn't even a problem. 4 hours till Scott Stapp!

Sure, I agree with this too. And I'm sure teams will say "Hey Gaby is good! You dont need both!" It makes sense. But my response would be, tell them to go to hell just as we did with Stanton. We need all the kids to turn over the lineup in the next 2 years. Cantu is first up based on his impending free agency. Cash it in if you need a pitcher at the break.
April 9, 201016 yr The Marlins are very high on Logan Morrison. There's zero chance he gets traded. Don't be surprised if Uggla is dangled for pitching help again. Exactly. Uggla is still the only player right now on the team that I could see being traded away at the trade deadline for a couple good pitching prospects. Our depth in the minor leagues as far as starting pitching doesn't have much to be extremely proud of (given we have a couple failed 1st round SP prospects). After that happens (I'm not even saying if, because this seems very likely to happen), then we move Coghlan to 2nd base and Morrison to left field. Seems like the best option for this team. Unless Stanton puts up a near 1.000 OPS with a ton of home runs and cuts down his K's quite a bit, we shouldn't really see him in the majors until September when the rosters expand.
April 9, 201016 yr Author What's with all the beating around the bushes? 1) Of course none of us is the Marlin GM. The proof of that is that Pinto is in the bullpen. 2) I believe that Stanton is the most dangerous hitter in the Marlin organization RIGHT NOW. Who do you sit? Coghlan? Maybin? Ross? Who cares? Cut cards. Stanton needs to be in the Marlins lineup. PS: Hanley never hit for squat in the minors. PSS: Oohhh, Jayson Heyward. PSSs: Ooohhh, people in the stands at Dolphins stadium in the summertime. How do these AA numbers strike you? In 2005 at Portland, in 122 games and 465 at bats, Hanley hit .271 with 6 hr and 52 rbi's. He was thrown out stealing once every three attempts. That was Hanley's last year in the minors. If you were waiting for Hanley's minor league numbers, he'd still be there.
April 9, 201016 yr You just don't get it. Also, I'd keep Pinto for now unless I found a trading partner. Also, attendance sucked even after Cabrera and Willis came up until we really got into the thick of the playoff race in late August and September (IIRC). Stanton coming up isn't going to result in any dramatic rises in attendance.
April 9, 201016 yr Author I may be a clown, but Stanton is in my outfield right now. You've got Maybin.
April 9, 201016 yr Just want to say, Stanton is 2-2 tonight with a HR and 2 rbi's and 2 runs scored. So he's homered in his first two games.

Love that Stanton has started off well, but should be mentioned that the pitcher for West Tennessee has been so erratic today, can't find the strike zone, and when he does the ball is getting pounded.

April 10, 201016 yr Stanton tonight: 3AB, 2H, 2R, HR, 2RBI, 3BB Jason Heyward this season, 17 AB, 2 H, 1 BB, 8 K

But I know Stanton will be a beast when his time comes. The point is that even Heyward, who is a more refined hitter with better pitch recognition who makes more contact, is still getting torn up in the bigs. He may not even be ready, so Stanton would probably get eaten alive right now.
April 10, 201016 yr Heyward has played only 4 games. Let's wait until he plays 30 games before we start making any conclusions. The way that kid hits he'll be doing fine after 30 games.
April 10, 201016 yr Author Funny thing ... you posted Heyward's numbers ... and they looked just like Maybin, Ross and Coghlan numbers ... except of course Heyward has homered and they have not.
