Funny thing ... you posted Heyward's numbers ... and they looked just like Maybin, Ross and Coghlan numbers ... except of course Heyward has homered and they have not.

 

Because one HR matters. Against a guy who gave up what 8 runs in 2 innings? Also, Ross has been playing significantly in the bigs for 3 years, Coghlan just kind of won the rookie of the year with the most hits in baseball during the second half, and Maybin is a PERFECT example of a top 10 product who has struggled mightily from AA and needed more time in the minors. He has looked much better September/First 4 games

 

The point is, which you missed or fail to see, no matter the upside, these guys are really young and need time to develop in the minors. Much much much more polished hitters in the minors, such as Heyward (who will continue to struggle despite glimpses of awesome) and a better sample Wieters (.753 OPS last year), are not THE MOST DANGEROUS HITTER on their teams from the first time they are up. In fact, Wieters was kept down until June in AAA. Let alone AA. Stanton is a great prospect, but he has severe contact issues and needs to go up level to level to see better pitchers so he learns to fight the offspeed stuff. Look at Ryan Howard's career path. That's what the Marlins need to do.

 

It's just really ridiculous. We all love Stanton. We all love the next big thing. I get it. But a couple of spring training home runs (didn't Abraham Nunez hit 10 one year) and doing well against AA kids, doesn't mean he is MLB ready. Have you learned NOTHING from Hermida? Who also, was a more polished minor league hitter than Stanton.

I agree with you about Stanton Lou. They need to bring him along slowly. I don't think I would compare him to Ryan Howard though who had Jim Thome blocking him in Philly. Stanton has no such issues in Florida. As far as Heyward goes......this is Bobby Cox' last season so if he wants the kid in RF so be it. If he continues to struggle like he has since opening day I think they will send him to the minors and let Melky Cabrera, Matt Diaz and Eric Hinske handle RF and LF.

Got no problem with any of that, but you aren't really going to push out Cody, Maybin, or Coghlan at this point and make room for him. Coghlan/Maybin are nearly as important for the future, and Ross is just very consistent.

 

I mean if it's August, he's rocking the minors, and say Maybin is doing a Bonifacio impression? Of course. But that's when this discussion starts, and Stanton needs to put up 300+ PA of awesome to even make it arguable. And I kind of doubt that as this team is going to hit and you aren't going to bring up Stanton to upgrade the bench.

 

I'd just like to see people's expectations tempered. He's a great prospect. The best we have had in 5 years hands down. It doesn't mean he is ready now, of even this season, even if he is starting to show glimpses of success in Spring Training and AA.

Really? With guys like Morrison, Peterson, Stanton, and Cousins could be on the major league roster all within the next 3 years as starters and backups, not to mention guys like Coghlan and Maybin who are already in our outfield, and you see Smolinski taking away a spot? Smolinski seems like he's going to be the player who can't catch a break when Coghlan moves to second someday and Smolinski's only chance of starting will be by a couple of injuries.

Yeah....fair or not, Gaby Sanchez's time here is limited until whenever Logan Morrison is ready. Ramirez, Morrison, Stanton, Coghlan, and Maybin are the future of this team position player wise. While a lot of people are going to probably give up on Maybin this year, its imperative that the front office not get impatient and let him play.

If he's going to update every day when Stanton does well (and you know he is), it should be done to him.

There is no need at all to rush Stanton at this point of his career. He's only 20 and has an extremly bright future ahead of him but as previously stated he needs to be mashing in the minors for him to be called up as a regular this season. You can even compare Stanton to Heyward here as it took Heyward 3 outstanding years in the minors before he got called up just this year. I want Stanton to follow that same path, after 3 outstanding years of minor league baseball it will be his time to shine!
