Stanton Watch

1-2 now with a double for stanton, and 2 walks, he was just intentionally walked

He's not swinging at the intentional walks, his plate discipline is improving!

There's been 2 unintentional an 1 intentional.. I'm sure they're pitching around him already, so he's either gaining plate discipline or getting nothing to swing at.

False dichotomy. There is also the possibility that both he's gained plate discipline AND they are pitching around him. I think (hope) this is the case, personally.

Pretty much have to move him up if AA pitchers aren't going to pitch to him. He needs quality reps not the Pujols treatment.

Someone break it to Jason Lane he's about to lose a lot of playing time in NOLA.

That's a really solid point. Following on gamecast it looked like some of the pitches were around the plate but he was just being patient, but it's hard to tell.

I do have to say that while Stanton's K rate is always going to be of concern, a look at his minor league numbers shows that he has never really had a problem taking a walk. In fact, during his minor league career his OBP has consistently been about .080 points higher than his AVG. By comparison, Coghlan (a player well-respected for his discipline in the minors) averaged .08-.09, merely a marginal improvement. Its easier to assume that the power hitter with less overall contact ability is walking at a worse rate, but Stanton doesn't seem to have a problem in this area. If he doesn't chase pitches, his chances of success at a higher level are substantially better, especially considering that once he demonstrates his power in the majors pitchers are going to be extra careful pitching to him.

1-2 with an RBI 2B so far today. 0K, 0BB.

I shouldn't get this caught up but I can't help it!

You totally should. We all should.

Finished 1-4. His line is now .338/.489/.789 - OPS of 1.278. His SLG is a decent OPS for many players... dang. He's good.

Some things in life are just worth waiting for and Mike Stanton is one of things.

I'm really in no big hurry to see him in the big leagues, I wanna see him dominate at Double A for another 100-200 ABs and then move onto Triple A and see what he can do there. I know the Marlins have a tendency to promote from Double A if they believe the player is ready, but I'd like to see Stanton just tear it up in the minor leagues for 2010.

I'd be gutted if that happened. I mean, I know Brock Lesnar switched between the NFL and wrestling, but if Stanton defected to the WWE, that would be BAD!

I'd like to see Stanton tear it up for the majors in 2010. Because it would be nice to get more wins where it actually counts and we're probably gonna jettison more talent, like Uggla, Cantu, Ross, and possibly Nolasco in the next year or two and the window is pretty much gonna be closed.

Unfortunately this team doesn't recognize a window, it recognizes a doggie door.

I don't think Nolasco is going anywhere.

If nolasco performs well this season he is getting a multiyear contract.

I agree. They are not letting Nolasco go. I think if Anibal is at all serviceable, he'll be staying too.

Anibal can leave. Nolasco is different. He's worthy of a good contract, to lock him up with JJ and solidify the rotation for some years.

Anibal is definitely gone after this year. Arbitration + Average pitcher + marlins = different team

Alert, Mike Stanton is 2 for 3 today with a home run and a double.

Buster Olney on Baseball Tonight: "Look for the Marlins to call up Mike Stanton within the next month".

Unlike some people here, I actually see the Marlins going the Miguel Cabrera rout with Stanton. I expect a mid June callup.
