According to major-league sources, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria was intent on making Guillen his next manager. Talks, sources say, progressed to the point that there was discussion of executing a trade that would send Guillen, who has a year left on his contract, to the Marlins for 20-year-old outfielder Mike Stanton, who hit 22 home runs and knocked in 59 runs in just 100 games as a rookie this season.

Riiiigggghhht....First of all, the White Sox would have accepted that so fast, they would have had Stanton on a plane to Chicago before they hung up the phone just to make sure the Marlins didn't change their minds. Second of all, there is no way the Marlins would have even offered a star like Stanton who is under team control for the next 6 years. My guess is this "disussion" went something like this:

Marlins: We'd like to talk to Ozzie.

White Sox: OK, you can have him, but you'll have to trade for him.

Marlins: What would you want in return?

White Sox: We'll take Mike Stanton.

Marlins hang up after Beinfest stops laughing.

Yeh why would you try and get a big name manager, who would be expected to realise the maximum potential of talent of his players, but trade away one of the most important pieces in the process.

This story is just a journo talking crap.

Well it might be if Loria is thinking ahead and doesn't want another Cabrera money situation on his hands. You know how he hates to have personnel that doesn't outperform its contract. He will be forced by public pressure and maybe by Stanton's agent to "take care of" Mike in several years. Which you know is not something that Loria likes to do. He only did the JJ contract this year because of MLB & MLBPA pressure.

Oh please. There is no way in f***ing hell that this was actually discussed. This is just like those "rumors" that the Marlins talked to the Red Sox about taking Hanley back. I'm sure that Loria would not give up a future superstud like Stanton for a f***ing manager.

Move on.

This reminds of when we signed Hanley to the long term deal and then like 3 months later a report came out saying we had discussions with the Red Sox about trading him and everyone was like "This organization is a f***ing joke" and then it came out that the "discussion" was the Red Sox basically saying "You wanna trade Hanley" and we said "Not really, but whats up" and that's about it.

I bet this happened:

Admin: We can has interview?

Kenny: Sure. We'll trade him to you.

Admin: Uh, I guess. Sup?

Kenny: Stanton!

Admin: lolz ok c ya

Just because somebody reports that there were "discussions" doesn't mean that the Marlins ever actually seriously considered it.

fauowls44 funny how you posted that as i posted this on the miami herald blog

If i had to guess the talks went down like this.

White sox to Marlins: You want Guiellen Managing your team.... lets make a trade.

Marlins to White Sox: What kind of trade do you have in mind.

WS to Fish: how about that guy that strikes out a lot... what's his name..... mmmm... Stanton.

Fish to white sox: You mean the kid with such raw power that he knocks infielders on there arse with routine ground balls... The one that hit a combined 43 hrs in minors and majors..

White sox to Fish: yeah thats the one..

Fish to WS: Click.....

Ws to Fish: hello, hello helloo.

In other words the white sox asked for Stanton in return. Not marlins offering stanton.

The Marlins would have been the laughinstock of major league baseball just like they were in 1998 if they made that deal. No manager is good enough to make a deal like that for, period!

Incorrect.

#Marlins sources are denying ever having talks with White Sox about Ozzie Guillen for Mike Stanton...

LOL! That is a good one!

Yea right

If they really want him (and the feeling is mutual), they can just wait until next year.

The only way this trade makes sense is if this is 1995.

When Mike was 6 years old? I still would've kept Stanton then.

Anyway, worst...rumor...ever.

Obvious that this was never seriously discussed, and just like bobbob said, it was more about the White Sox probably asking and the Marlins laughing hysterically before hanging up the phone.

He meant this Stanton

But yeah, I would have kept him when he was 6 too.
