Kind of ridiculous, don't you think. I appreciate what Pudge did for us in 2003 and I always will, but it was still just one season. Charles Johnson was our first ever draft pick, a consistent gold-glover with some pop over multiple seasons with the fish and also won a world series (hitting a titanic blast in game one). I think he got short-changed. I was fine with all the other selections.

Pudge was pretty much the centerpiece of the 2003 team. I didn't like seeing CJ shortchanged, but can understand Pudge being there. CJ was never a star, although he was very good, and he wasn't asked to play the role in 1997 that Pudge was in 2003.

I disagreed with that too, CJ had probably the greatest defensive season ever for a catcher in 1997 and made two all-star teams while winning three gold gloves for Fish. Pudge had a great season and truly helped the 2003 team to that championship, but CJ did it quite a bit longer.

I don't think you can go wrong either way. Yeah CJ was here longer, but Pudge was the face of the franchise during a championship year.

you are right about that

Pudge was the man during that playoff run.

Plus, it was a fan vote... presuming the voting was legit, you can't fault a fan vote... its not like Samson himself went out and picked that all-time lineup

Yes, you can if the fans that voted him in were wrong. ;)

Really? I think of Cabrera, Beckett, and Willis before Pudge when I think of 2003.

that cat in your avatar is awesome

Ironic, considering 2/3 weren't in the majors at the start of the year. Also, while Willis had an incredible performance in the regular season, he was entirely unreliable as a starter in the playoffs, resulting in him being removed from the rotation.

Also, being the face of the organization is more than just performance. Willis became insanely popular during the year, but Pudge was brought in to be the veteran centerpiece of an unproven young squad, batting in the middle of the order and managing the talented but incredibly young and unpolished pitching staff the entire year.

Cabrera, Willis, and Beckett were all here at least 5 years. Pudge was here for 1 year.

Maybe that's why you think more of those three than Pudge.

All three of them had major contributions to the team that year.

That's all fine and dandy, but not many people outside of Marlin fans knew who they were at the time. It was a bunch of rookies... And Pudge to most people.

Whenever I talked to people out of town that summer Willis was mentioned with Pudge. People knew him because he was an all-star and because he had a funky and easily recognizable delivery.

It's still a crime that CJ lost out to Pudge for all-time Marlins Catcher. CJ was the gold standard in the NL and played more than one season here.

I was kinda surprised that Kevin Brown showed up considering I've heard what an a-hole he typically is (and not just on days when he was pitching).

Pudge was the latest "star" catcher, so he got the fan vote. Fans' memories are short, and I would bet most fans really only remember CJ's last visit here. People forget what he meant to this team. GGs, AS games, setting defensive MLB records, calling games, etc....... When you talked about great catchers in those days, you talked about 2 guys. Pudge in Texas and CJ in Florida. There were guys with better bats playing the position, but those two were catchers, and everyone knew it.

I voted for CJ in the poll. Because he deserved it far more.

Who were the choices for catcher? Was it Santiago, Johnson, zaun, piazza, rodriguez and baker?

Mike Piazza, he of 5 games with the franchise, was on the ballot? That would be stupid.

Sir,

He was at the closing ceremony- how much more far fetched is it?

He was at the closing ceremony because he was officially a Marlin and I'm sure everyone was invited. It was pretty clear by the look on his face that he was just there because it was funny but I appreciate it.

What about Hanley over Gonzo at SS? I didn't like that one. Also, it seems odd for someone on the all time team to still be playing on the team.

Not sure if serious.

So offense is more important?
