To be honest I watched that video and expected Zambrano to smash the kids face into the table.

Maybe you should reread what I said. Z is an upgrade that really didn't cost us anything. When you have the opportunity to upgrade at basically no cost, you go for it. But if you think giving up some of our star players just to land Garza makes him a nice fit, then let's all be glad you are a GM only on a sports board.

 

And in case you weren't paying attention.....THEY said they wanted lefties and they went hot and heavy over 3 pretty damn good ones, landing one. Also got one for the back of the rotation, but probably is now going to be a AAA pitcher getting his time in just in case of injury/slump/whatever. But even that depends on how he does in ST, where they were originally saying he would compete for that 5th spot. Personally,right now I like the idea of him getting his work in at AAA instead of breaking camp in the pen. But that thought could change depending on ST results.

I only say that because we haven't heard much from the trade market. With the exception of guys that teams want way too much than we can afford or are willing to give. Because of the signings already, the Marlins will be in alot of rumor mills about guys like that. I don't think they are just sitting back and congratulating themselves at this time. This is the time of year the FO people earn their $$$.

 

Plus, the closer we get to the reporting dates, the more we will hear of signing some FAs to minor league deals with an invite to ST. Some of those signings have paid off in the past, even if just temporarily.

This must have been what the Marlins meant when they constantly said "We're searching through the trade market, not free agency", with the obvious candidate of Roy Oswalt still out there.

 

I think overall, this is a great move. Little to no downside, and A LOT of upside. Big Z is only 30 and still has the stuff. A change of scenery could do him wonders.

Also, the Baker - LeBlanc trade looks pretty good right now too.

Speaking of Garza, not that there is any longer a need to further upgrade the rotation, but he can probably be ruled out for another reason.

 

Garza was one of the 5 Cubs asked by management for their opinion of Zambrano, when they were supposedly looking for player input about what to do with him. All 5 said they felt they had been betrayed and they didn't want him around. It was unanimous. If Cub management hadn't already decided to dump Zambrano, that apparently cemented it. Comments about the players' collective and uniformly negative opinions were all over the Chicago papers a few days ago when the trade happened.

 

The Cubs were lucky that Ozzie wanted him, nobody else did. Worked out perfectly for us, an $18 million pitcher for ~$3 million.

 

Very unlikely that those two guys will ever again be on the same team. Certainly not on the Marlins. Beinfest may well be justified in thinking that Ozzie can keep Zambrano on an even keel in a new situation, but he's not about to throw a stick of dynamite named Garza into an already potentially volatile mix.

So...what happens if zambrano is a beast this season? Do the marlins offer him some sort of 3 year deal? Do they let him walk because of his emotional issues? Do they low ball him knowing that most teams probably don't want him? Would he be prevent next off season's FA pitchers from signing here?

 

 

If he has a beast of a season, someone will overpay for him, allowing us to dip into the FA pool.

I'd love for the FO to sign Hamels and Cain next year ... that'd be incredible.

You recently said that Garza was not a great fit because he wasn't a LHP. I'm the one who brought up cost. When I asked for proof that the Marlins were specifically targeting a LHP after already signing Buehrle, you didn't provide any.

What numbers does everyone expect from him?

Fantastic acquisition. Although he has had his issues, if Ozzie can keep him quiet and keep him focused on the games ahead then i'm sure he will be fine. Miles better than Voldermort who has left.

I think it depends on whether or not he can get his SO/9 last year (6.2) close to what the average for the other years was (7.7). However, he did have a little lower BB/9 (3.5) than his career (4.1)
