January 5, 201214 yr and there's still money to get another bat? It wouldn't surprise me if this is the team going into Spring Training. We've spent plenty on three free agents and we don't really have a need anymore. The lineup was already solidified after the Reyes signing, the Bell signing solidified the bullpen, and the Buehrle signing + this trade solidifies the rotation. Even the bench, we just gave Dobbs a two-year deal yesterday. I think we're basically just waiting for March/April now. And we signed Rowand [to a minor league deal].
January 5, 201214 yr All kidding about his personality disorder/anger issues aside, I like this for the rotation, and I love that we're getting rid of Volstad and the Cubs are paying most of Big Z's salary.

January 5, 201214 yr Author There is still a chance we go after Cespedes, but this is probably the team we'll have going forward

January 5, 201214 yr I absolutely love this. LOVE THIS! Seriously. Even if Zambrano bombs, we're just giving up $2 million a year, AND we're getting rid of Volstad. This is insanely awesome.
January 5, 201214 yr Love the potential upside here! Volstad is no more than a 4 starter on a bad team, 5 starter on a good team, and not even in the rotation for a great team. Granted, he does have potential. But he's a sinker pitcher who gives up HR's and has some control issues. I personally like him, but this is too good of an opportunity to pass up. There's no way that Zambrano has a a worse year than Volstad if he just keeps a level head on his shoulders. IF.
January 5, 201214 yr I just got online. Who'd we trade? Volstad. The Cubs are eating 15 million of the 18 million for Zambrano.
January 5, 201214 yr why are we always talking about Chicago players? uuugggggggghhhhhhh the same reason we're always dealing with Theo Epstein. Beinfest has some weird infatuations
January 5, 201214 yr By the way, Wade LeBlanc more or less = a lefty Volstad if Zambrano bombs. So there's insurance.

Even with the Miami Marlins name and the willingness to spend, I love that this team still has that old Marlins "trying to find a bargain" mindset they previously had.
January 5, 201214 yr So... SS. Reyes CF. Boni 3B. Hanley RF. Stanton LF. LoMo 1B. Gaby C. Buck 2B. Infante Bench: C. Hayes 1B/3B. Dobbs 3B/SS. Murphy OF. Rowand OF/2B. Coghlan SP: 1. JJ 2. Buehrle 3. Anibal 4. Nolasco 5. Zambrano BP: 1. LeBlanc (LR) 2. Mujica 3. Webb 4. Cishek 5. Choate 6. Dunn 7. Bell (CL) Amirite?!
January 5, 201214 yr He's no Roy Oswalt but this is a lot better than some of the names that were available. I still think Volstad can amount to a decent SP, but we're talking about an okay #4 at best, and Zambrano is pretty much his equal if he has a terrible season. So if he can get back in form, this is quite a boost to the rotation.

Anibal 4. Nolasco 5. Zambrano BP: 1. LeBlanc (LR) 2. Mujica 3. Webb 4. Cishek 5. Choate 6. Dunn 7. Bell (CL) Amirite?! Pretty much. Last couple bench spots/long reliever role decided in Spring Training.
January 5, 201214 yr So, hey, guys, this first round pick turned out to be not so bad, right? =D *ducks as tomatoes are thrown at him*

He would replace Cishek in that scenario and become the set up man. I REALLY like that team. I honestly think Boni doesn't repeat what he did last year, but if he does, that's awesome. If he doesn't, then we put Coghlan/Roward/Cepedes/whoever in center field after (if Cespedes, he'd probably start immediately). Coghlan probably starts the season in the minor leagues, as I think the front office would rather see him get playing time than rot on the bench. Other than that, this team is starting to look like the best fielded team the Marlins have had since 2005.
