Petersen sent down, Rowand released

Featured Replies

#Marlins moves: Bryan Petersen opt. to AAA; J.D. Martin & Nick Green re-assigned to minor lg. camp; Aaron Rowand released

Looks like it's Cogs and Kearns on the bench.

Let the bitching commence. :D

Yea, CanesCop. Looks like you and I are about the only two here who predicted Coghlan on the opening day roster.

BUT HE CAN'T PLAY!!!! OMGZ!!!!

Ehh, I guess I am surprised that Petersen got sent down considering his numbers are better that Coghlan this spring. But you know that the front office wants to give Coghlan one more shot to be productive, even though he is a defensive liability compared to Petersen.

Hopefully Peterson wakes up & realizes that no one is going to watch his silly videos if he's in the minors.

Rowand move was inevitable. Slightly surprised by the Petersen demotion.

I agreed. Today CC joined the starting lineup as a RF.

If he cannot make it, Petey will be No.1 candidate to callup, I think.

Today Kearns takes at 1st base position. That's weird.

He never been played at 1st base, entire major and minor career.

Expect some position changing?

I don't think many were adamant in saying he wouldn't be on the opening day roster.

And, of course, his presence on the roster doesn't mean he's a productive player.

Surprised they'd rather have Petersen playing every day than Coghlan.

Yeah, it kinda cuts both ways. Do they think Coghlan is better, and thus he stays in the Majors? And/or do they think Petersen is the more viable long-term starting candidate, so they prefer to get him full-time ABs in AAA rather than mostly riding the bench in the bigs?

Coghlan is in RF today, a position he has also never played in his career.

I guess Ozzie is trying to see if these guys can fill in some other holes when needed? Let's find out how versatile they really are...

My thoughts exactly.

I think this move only makes sense if they expect Coghlan to be making a lot of starts because of the Morrison/Stanton injuries, but that doesn't seem to be a likely scenario.

I still assume this is because they expect to need some spot starts at the corner OF positions because of injuries to Morrison and Stanton.

Or at least that's my guess.

In which case they went with the worse defensive player who isn't a clear offensive upgrade either.

Spring Training!

It's one of those things that even Peterson was expecting to start the season in Triple-A. Kearns definitely earned his keep this spring. We'll see if Cogz can contribute again.

Was at the game today - Kearns didn't exactly have great reactions over at first. He was hugging the bag and a ball [hit sharply on the ground] got by him between his body and the bag [all of about a foot and a half of space] and he hardly flinched. His glove didn't leave his side.

Both Coghlan and Kearns have earned roles as reserve outfielders to begin the season.

My question is which one of them is on a shorter leash?

I don't see how Kearns would ever get time at 1st this season.

Isn't Dobbs our backup there?

He'll be back up this season.

For sure but I'm sure he was really looking forward to being their opening night.
