Something Positive About the 2013 Roster!

The team did start off slow, and that didn't help much. 8-14 April, that's not gonna draw in many fans. Plus, even to match projections, they would have had to have sold out every game, and even then, would we have reached those expectations?

Erick - regardless of new ballpark or not, this is still Miami we're talking about. If there's not winning, they ain't showing.

The attendance problem was evident from day 1.

There were too many games held early on under ideal conditions ass-in-seatwise that drew under expectations to see otherwise. By the end of May it was evident...whether the team was on a winning or losing streak...the attendance for whatever reason or combinations of reasons just wasn't there.

I do think that had the players done better and had the team been in the playoff chase late, then maybe the team wouldn't have been nuked by Loria. maybe. And if it had remained intact besides throwing Bell in the shark tank then attendance would likely be much better next year. But, now we'll never know

Has anyone ever stopped and thought that no one goes to the games simply because baseball is just too boring?

If you are talking about a team as bad as the Marlins were at the end of last year, how can you expect people to pay money to be bored?

Granted, I had a grand ole time each of the half dozen or so times I drove down to the new ballpark last year.

But I am a baseball nut.

For the everyday casual baseball fan in Miami (and South Florida), how could you expect them to pay money to go sit around and be bored? They can just stay at home, kick on the game in HD, and save their money.

I don't know why you always make excuses for the bad attendance.

Yeah, they started out slow but they park was still brand new. That should draw many fans. An 8-14 record in April is sure as hell not going to be turning away fans after the Marlins just signed a bunch of big name free agents. Nobody knew in April that the team would go on to lose 93 games.

Also, I believe that Samson said he was expecting something like 32-ish. That doesn't require them to sell out every game.

I just think that Miami is just a terrible baseball city (one of the worst) and probably a bad sports town in general.

It's just the marlins. Dolphins were one of the best teams in attendance for a while before these last few seasons. The Heat have been doing well, too.

The Heat have been winning.

Right. Which is the reason for their good attendance. The Dolphins had great attendance for so many years up until the 1-15 season. They haven't recovered from that yet.

My statement wasn't me trying to say they will never draw. We could in the new stadium if we start winning. I'm just saying the Marlins shouldn't be grouped with the Heat and Dolphins when it comes to judging the fan base/attendance.

I can't totally agree with that. I see South Florida as a place to be seen area. Maybe that's saying the same thing as a bad sports town, but I see a difference. However, in another post you did make a good point. There is no sense in continually making excuses for our attendance records over the years.

There are plenty of things to do in Chicago. The Cubs consistently suck yet they consistently draw.

Certain fanbases are better than others. The fanbase in Miami sucks.

The Heat have a bunch of fairweather fans.

I'm surprised Dolphins games are even televised because about half are empty. The only games that seem to draw well are divisional games when Jets/Patriots fans come to watch their teams play.

Miami isn't the only city with "things to do" or "things to see." I hate that excuse too.

I know what you're saying, but if they team isn't good, people would rather do one of a million other things to do in Miami. That's not the case in many other cities.

Then the problem seems to be more with the people who live there than the city itself.

Other than the beach, Miami really doesn't have more to do than the average city. And is the beach really stopping that many people from going to a Tuesday night game at 7:05?

Yes...we aren't exactly discovering america here. We all know Miami sports fans suck.

Just saying that very few people here seem to admit that. I hate to sound like Broncobob, but people here make a ton of excuses about attendance.

What fan base doesn't have fair weather fans?

Like I said, you can say the Marlins fan base sucks. Don't lump the Heat or Dolphins fan base In there with them. They actually come out when the team wins. In the Dolphins case, even when they were losing the fans still came out. The attendance struggles recently are new.

We have to be patient with the Marlins fan base, though. They'll come out if we start winning, hopefully. If not then the fanbase really does suck.

Why not? Those two fanbases suck too.

The Heat and Dolphins fanbases are similar to the Marlins fanbase. Especially the Heat. The Dolphins have somewhat of a history so it's a bit different although their crowds suck now, as well. The Heat fanbase only supports the team when it has superstars.

Not every fanbase is this way.

You don't call a fanbase good if they go when the team starts winning. If that's the case, every single fanbase is good.

Not every fan base supports you when you're winning. That's a bad fanbase to me.

There are only so many fan bases that support a team through both losing and winning. Nearly every fan base doesn't show up unless you're winning. The Heat are one of them. I don't think that's a bad fanbase, just a normal one.

As for the Dolphins, they're attendance sucks now, but this is a football city. They were averaging 70,000+ during the 1-15 season. That fan base doesn't suck. What's happening now is hard to explain.

It's not at all difficult to explain. Back when the Dolphins were 1-15 the fight for our entertainment dollars was a weak one. The Heat were not spectacular, the Panthers had missed the playoffs again and the Marlins played during the summer and in a craptastic season/stadium.

Now the fight for our entertainment dollars is headlined by a Playoff Panthers team, a new Ballpark, and one of the greatest collections of basketball stars well probably ever see outside of the Olympics.

The dolphins had a strong hold on the entertainment market for a long time and took it for granted. Instead of reinvesting in the on field product and off field buzz they kept plodding along with a parcels team with no interesting subplots. No stars and no measurable success.

The fanbase then lost their star to the redskins, then the jets, and then refused to reinvigorate the franchise in anyway.

The fanbase took their money to something that would have made him happy, and with all the options these days it wasn't hard.

The only reason the dolphins are still on TV is their owner Ross has paid to keep the games from being blacked out.

Absolutely. A negative person calls it a bandwagon town, a positive person calls it a winner's town, and a normal person just takes it for what it's worth.

It's not just the Marlins. The only team that DOES get a decent draw despite sucking for so long is the Dolphins. That's also because it's football and they only get 8 home games a year.

The tradition of baseball game attendance is born from consistent interest. There is nobody over 35 that grew up as a Marlins fan. Established older fans have complete viewing access to the teams from their old cities (and thus no inherent reason to bond with a new team).

Winning will draw crowds. Continuing to win will build fans. Thick and thin does not get established until there some thick going on.

"Crowds" will raise payroll. "Money coming in will equal money going out." It's their mantra. Deal with it.

Alison Williams didn't get traded.

Sweet, beautiful Alison. She's responded to some of my tweets before. Does that mean she wants me?
