Spring training games already have begun, so time is running short on Lohse to be ready to go by the start of the 2013 season, especially for a new team. Most recently, the New York Yankees said they aren't interested, even after Phil Hughescame down with a back injury, and the Texas Rangers reiterated their lack of interest, too. Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post writes that he doesn't expect the Colorado Rockies to be an option, either, despite their ongoing search for starting pitching, while Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported that the Brewers aren't discussing Lohse with agent Scott Boras. FoxSports.com's Jon Morosi tweeted recently that thePittsburgh Pirates are another team in the same boat. Where Lohse lands is still very much up in the air, and it could come down to which contender suffers the first injury to its rotation. At this stage, the waiting game may be Lohse's best option, as he may need a club to get desperate in order to get anything more than a below-market one-year deal. The draft-pick compensation clearly is a factor, and from Lohse's perspective so is the chance to reestablish value if he does settle on a one-year pact. One outside-the-box idea may be the Miami Marlins, who own a protected first-round pick (since it's in the Top 10) and may feel some pressure to spend a little money after their fire sale earlier this offseason. This type of strategy could lead to the signing team basically purchasing a solid pitcher who would almost definitely have value on the trade market during the summer, especially once injuries and performance issues come into play. I love the idea of adding a veteran like Lohse, certainly adds some experienced depth at the least.
March 1, 201313 yr If we don't lose a pick, I'm down. I can see this working for all parties. And it'd be somewhat ironic as he handed us our Opening Day loss last year, which set in motion the disaster of 2012. It'd be funny to see him on our side of the field this Opening Day.

March 2, 201313 yr Can you do sign and trades in baseball? Yes, and no. I don't think baseball will get mad at circumventing the rules at this type of transaction because it actually helps the player. But once it's a sign and trade that is blatantly against the players best interest they will probably do something. I think sign and trades are Frowned upon, but not illegal in other words.

We all know Passan and Law would be all over them for trading another star, even if the star only signed to be traded.

March 2, 201313 yr If we don't lose a pick, then go for it. We can always flip him at the deadline. It would cost us a pick, just not the protected one. It means we give StL a 2nd rounder
March 3, 201313 yr And we hopefully trade Lohse for something that has a more guaranteed chance of contributing sooner than a second round draft pick would. Not all picks pan out, but if you can swap Lohse for Bourjos it's a win I think.

March 3, 201313 yr Cause they'd lose their first pick and they don't seem to want to. Who says? It's more likely that the Angels just don't want to spend the money. It'd also be dumb for the Marlins to pay Lohse's salary in a trade scenario.
