It's pricey to see a team that will more than likely send you home disappointed.

 

I got free tickets to see the fish vs rockies a couple of weeks ago.   Between Parking, Food & Drinks =  $67 dollars the stadium got from me.

 

Honestly the Marlins need to sell them 7 dollar fish tank tickets they use to offer...to get butts out there.   Once there, your money flows out of your pockets.

This is a solid rotation (solid as in at least league average) if everyone is healthy: Fernandez, Alvarez, Haren plus any two of Cosart, Koehler, and Latos at the back end. Injuries are more of a problem than underperformance.

 

However, the offense is pretty damn healthy for the most part. And those who are injured (Morse, Prado) were pretty shitty and underperforming before they got injured.

 

The offense still proves to be the main culprit for me. They need at least another 25+ HR power bat or two.

Its been this way for years too.  I guess thats what happens when you 1) don't spend in international free agency, 2) try to only find reclamation projects in free agency, 3)  Don't draft well, 4) Don't develop your own guys.

What's even more hilarious is that with Bour and Dietrich instead of Morse and Prado it's actually better. These are two guys that practically work for free that weren't seriously considered for a position despite all the signs that said they probably should have. Hopefully we get some value at the deadline for those guys as well as Haren.

It might be because they think if they get in that cheap and don't eat at the concessions or buy anything they are losing money, when right now they quantity would help them out. Personally I don't buy anything at the park. Once in a blue moon I will buy a drink otherwise I wait until after the game and hit up the spots around the Park.

I picked Jose to get the first win of the season in that pre-season predictions thread. I want a point on the technicality. I mean, he is the Marlins' #1 starter.

 

 

These are two guys that practically work for free that weren't seriously considered for a position despite all the signs that said they probably should have.

 

I see a 1B with a MILB OPS of .810 while normally being old for his level and whose claim to fame is an .886 OPS in the PCL (which filters out to 'okay'), who has never particularly put up big power numbers despite being a big guy old for his league and failed to put up any power numbers in his first go around in the league. And, to take this year into account, has put up power numbers above what would be expected of him based off past performance (but could be sustainable since he has reached his power peak age) with a .585 OPS since June 1st after a hot start.

 

v.s.

 

A 1B with a 124 OPS+ in the past 5 years, 132 OPS+ excluding his one terrible BABIP season, with a 132 OPS+ last season. However, injury prone, and injured again this season.

I see a guy who has yet to prove he can field any position adequately enough at the major league level with just a 91 OPS+ going into the season (Albeit, small sample size while being young and posting good power numbers. Regardless, no where near the offense you need to make up for his terrible defense.)

A guy whose age is taking a toll on his plate discipline and power numbers, but whose overall game is still on pace for a 2.4 WAR over 650 PA.

 

I see two good left handed bench bats, but you have issues if they are your go-to starters. How do you see two starters out of them, outside of homerism in our system (aka Zack Cox .100 ISO as a 26 year old in AA)?

 

 

^^ Yeah what he said. The Marlins would've been killed (and rightfully so) if they started Bour over Morse to start the year. Morse was always a risk signing in some hope that he'd become his 2011 self all over again or at least a little bit of that player. Unfortunately that didn't happen. Luckily he's only on a two year deal so it isn't all that awful (but when added with Garrett Jones' money we've kinda f*cked up at 1B since Gaby).

 

I like Bour but long term he probably isn't all that good of a starting 1st baseman. Like nny said he's a solid bench bat or in my opinion a great platoon bat if we can get a guy who mashes lefties. I've also defended Dietrich more than a lot of people but long term he's also more a bench bat than a good starter. I'm also worried if we plan on going into next season with Realmuto. His defense is top notch but the offense will hurt us in the long run.

 

Basically, the big things this team needs in the offseason are a 1B, 3B (while Prado is acceptable, we should look for better than just average), C, half a bullpen, and a proven #3 starter. This team can move towards playoff contention if they focus on addressing these issues (and obviously contingent on health, good players continuing to play good, and Yelich/Ozuna getting their sh*t together).

 

 

Honestly, I feel like health and performance from Fernandez, Alvarez, Yelich, and Ozuna and all we'd need this offseason is a #2 starter.

 

I think a lot of people overrated Realmuto but I think you underrated him - a 24 year old catcher who's been able to hold his own offensively is rare. Getting a good back up C (especially a left handed one to help split doody against RHP) would be great, but I wouldn't really call it a "big need." Same with Prado - there's nothing wrong with average. One of the key reasons we were good in 2009 was that Bonifacio was the only player with a negative WAR (IIRC, we lead the majors in least amount of negative WAR that season). A 2.5 WAR from all 9 batting positions (the "ninth" being your combined bench) and that's a top-5 position player team.

 

But we need a healthy Jose, need a guy behind him, and need a healthy Alvarez.
