Syndengaard could've been a Mahlin?

Featured Replies

Yup. I've mentioned it in the past. The Marlins literally chose the only one of the three that does not belong (nor will ever belong, most likely) in a Major League rotation.

Permission to dig the knife in deeper?

Not only could we have had Kershaw by trading Cabrera to the Dodgers [along side Kemp, Ethier, and I believe one more pitcher].

If I remember correctly, the Tigers offered Curtis Granderson and Justin Verlander for Dontrelle after his 2005 season. SOOOO Y'KNOOOOOW.

Not that any of them would still be here ...

I'm sure if we had taken syndergaard we would have had to take more of the salary we were trading. It was a salary dump. It was cheapness more than idiocy that caused this to happen.

nah nico was the higher rated prospect of those 3 at the time believe it or not

Was he? I remember at the time wishing we would have gotten syndergaard and d arnaud and being upset when the mets got them for dickey.

per the article nico was #5, sanchez #6, and thor #7. I'm guessing age/professional level was clearly the factor there in 2012 rather than talent level although Nico also used to strike people out when he was on the blue jays

The trade was prior to 2013, not 2012. Thor was a top-30 and Sanchez a top-40 while Nicolino was at best top-75

I mean it looks bad now, but at the time Nicolino was considered equal with those guys. It's very hard to project out of A ball.

The more frustrating one was in '03 when we let the Rangers take their pick between Jason Stokes and Adrian Gonzalez (who were both at the time considered big prospects) in exchange for Urbina and they chose the guy who would actually have success. At the time the Marlins felt they were both equal.

There is some selection bias going on here.  We tend to remember the failures more than the successes, to be sure.  But I do remember that Syndergaard was universally regarded as the better prospect than any of the pitchers we got back from TOR.

as they say in new York:

marlins fan: "marlins had a chance to sign thor"

new York person: "FUGETABOUTIT!"

With how the elbow injuries have been happening it's almost inevitable that he will have some type of injury like this.
