Jose Fernandez dies in boating accident

Featured Replies

We are so used to superstars going off the rails with drink and drugs that the natural reaction is to assume some blame on their part if they get caught up in bother but in this instance I genuinely think it was just a tragic accident.

Doesn't that more go along with family problems, team problems, being upset with contract, etc... Could be a lot of things, including things that people get upset about every day. And with Jose being an emotional person, I can see him letting something eat away at him if he is upset.

As for the contract, dude had to know he was gonna get paid. I doubt it was anything to do with that. Furthermore, Jose was just such a happy guy. Such a happy person. I highly doubt any of this had anything to do with it

It will be interesting to see if he gets the Cy Young. I think he's certainly deserving on the merits of his own performance (not even awarding it in memoriam). He has the best FIP in the NL, owed largely to his sick K/9 strikeout rate. I don't like Fangraphs WAR for pitchers too much, but he's ranked #1.

Jose's ERA isn't quite as low as some of the other guys, though.

I think he definitely has a shot.

Agreed, wins shouldn't matter (even though they somehow do) but he definitely has the stats. He earned it.

Well, I'm not even talking about wins. It comes down to whether or not you are the type of voter who prioritizes innings and ERA or someone that admires Jose's dominance in terms of strikeouts. I think his rate was something like 12.5 per nine, which is insanely good.

If the tragedy didn't happen, I wouldn't quite have expected him to get the Cy Young, but now I don't think it's unreasonable to award it to him in memoriam.

Maybe Jose wanted help because it was his first time driving the boat?.Maybe contrary to reports, he was driving?.

You never know...I used to let people take the wheel of my boat, I always had to take back control because they didnt know the procedure and would swerve off course into the shallows. Im wondering how they would even know if he was at the controls or not. ??

Yep, 12.5. Ridiculous.

He also has the highest ever percentage of batters struck out [31.2%] for anyone who made at least two big league starts. Think about that, two starts, someone could have struck out nearly 40% of batters they faced, but they didn't. Jose did 31.2% for his career. His rate this season places him at #5 all time for a single season.

*sigh*

Talking to @Admin on Facebook and we combined for an idea.

Have the lineup tomorrow be as it would have been, and have Jose's jersey on the mound to begin the game, and have Mattingly come out and call to the bullpen for Conley. Then take the jersey and hang it in the dugout going forward.

I like the idea in theory and I think they might do something along the lines of this but that would be way too emotional.  I can't imagine a player being able to hold it together after seeing that sequence.

You're probably right, but I feel this might be the best option. Whatever they do will be right, I think. They'll do him justice.

Talent like Jose is once in a billion. We were fortunate enough as marlins fans to have him. I might not be the best marlins fan , but every time Jose was due to pitch I was watching that game. Not even going to lie this brought tears , and its been the first time that has happened to me non family related. A  healthy Jose was due to break so many records and its very unfortunate what the marlins community and his family will have to go through from this tragedy. I hope the Marlins can treat his family properly for the loss. RIP and thanks for the memories , I would had loved to seen you pitch in a  playoff atmosphere.

I literally cannot even function right now. He was my favorite player. Such a joy to watch. This is a tragic day.

I feel compelled to write because at this point I just feel angry and hurt, and quite frankly I don't know how else to vent and fortunately, we have this wonderful island of Marlins fans here, that I know feel my pain.  Growing up in Miami, playing sports and mainly baseball, and especially being Cuban American, I saw in Jose what I always dreamed about being, playing for my home town team the Marlins.  Of course, being good in high school and trying to make it beyond that takes some special talent and I quickly realized that my career wasn't going to be in baseball.  Fortunately every 5th day, I had Jose to look upon and feel as though, I can almost feel what it felt like it to make it by the way expressed his joy and enthusiasm for the game. My mother and grandmother were my biggest fans and seeing how Jose was with his really touched me. He was living out a dream, a DREAM one can only imagine.  For instance, my mother whom the Marlins have delivered one heart break after another found her way back to stadium almost more than me to cheer on a kid whom like many mothers felt it was one of her own. My uncle whom is does spanish media looked upon him as though he was his grandson, especially after losing his very own son a couple of years ago due to cancer. My uncle saw part of his son in Jose; he always smiling, laughing, radiating love into any room he walked into and most importantly always made you feel like he was your friend.  A lot of us have had the opportunity of meeting him and others maybe not but whether you have or haven't we all lost a son, a brother, a friend  and for me, well I lost someone whom was living out my dream, and it couldn't have been a better human being doing it.. Thank you JF!
