September 26, 20169 yr All Marlins players wearing #16 tonight, per Clark Spencer. Sent from my SM-N920T using MarlinsBaseball.com mobile app YESSSS!!! LOVE THIS!
September 26, 20169 yr I almost see no way they can figure out who was driving. And while normally him being out at a party before it would mean nothing, the time is weird because that would mean he was at the party around 1 and then went out on the boat around 2-3 am. That's not a normal time to go out on a fishing trip. It's not like the fishing trip started at 10 pm I'm saying. If they hadn't finger printed the wheel, they should have. If Jose's fingerprints aren't there or only a few (like he might have touched the wheel a while ago) and there are many belonging to one of the others, then it can be assumed Jose was not driving. Whoever fingerprints are on the wheel was most likely the driver.

September 26, 20169 yr Well, I believe the Coast Guard said that they figured the boat was heading pack to the port when it struck the jetty, right? If they were at bar around 2am that means that they were only out on the water for like an hour or so. That sounds more like a joy ride than a fishing trip to me. Thats what I was thinking, unless they went out fishing early that afternoon or evening ,and stopped off at the dock party afterwards, maybe had a few drinks then headed back.

It's entirely possible they went out on the trip and then decided they wanted to come back after not getting any bites for the first hour or for another reason.
September 26, 20169 yr my question is, how did he die? Did he die from the impact of the boat striking the jetty. Did he drown to death? Did he die after the boat capsized and flipped over and he was stuck underneath? Have any details emerged about this? Did they complete the autopsy?

Purely speculative guess on my part: the boat capsized, he hit his head on either the jetty or the boat and was knocked unconscious.

I can imagine that if your ejected from the boat you will hit your head on one of those nasty looking rocks, blunt force my guess.
September 26, 20169 yr Purely speculative guess on my part: the boat capsized, he hit his head on either the jetty or the boat and was knocked unconscious. yeah that's what i was thinking too. If they find water in his lungs, that means he was still alive when he hit the water. If there's no water in the lungs, or dry drowning, that means the death occurred before he was submersed in water.
September 26, 20169 yr I can imagine that if your ejected from the boat you will hit your head on one of those nasty looking rocks, blunt force my guess. god, i don't even want to imagine that scene. truly truly horrific.

September 26, 20169 yr He died from trauma, not drowning they said yesterday. Forgot who said it. appreciate the info Admin. still curious what the autopsy will reveal.
September 26, 20169 yr I can imagine that if your ejected from the boat you will hit your head on one of those nasty looking rocks, blunt force my guess. It was stated he did not drown. The cause of death was by trauma. Whether it was hitting on the jetty or the boat landing on him really doesn't matter. However I think it is telling that Samson said that the Marlins were called to verify Jose Fernandez's address found on a body. This leads me to speculate that the trauma was so severe that he could not be recognized and used other means to ID him.

September 26, 20169 yr It is heartbreaking to imagine his body being thrown from the boat into those rocks. I try not to think about it but I keep visualizing it.
September 26, 20169 yr This leads me to speculate that the trauma was so severe that he could not be recognized and used other means to ID him. Not necessarily. He had to be identified no matter what. Just because that happened doesn't mean the trauma was that severe that he was unrecognizable. They couldn't just assume it was Jose Fernandez and then release that info if it wasn't him.
September 26, 20169 yr that's a possibility, but I heard the address confirmation was just to ensure it was actually the Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez, given how common the name is. This.
September 26, 20169 yr that's a possibility, but I heard the address confirmation was just to ensure it was actually the Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez, given how common the name is. Le Batard stated on the radio today that the bodies were not very recognizable. He also stated that a lot more information is going to be coming out regarding this accident in the coming days and it might not be good but imo it doesn't change a thing. On today's game, I don't know how these guys are going to be able to play today...
September 26, 20169 yr that's a possibility, but I heard the address confirmation was just to ensure it was actually the Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez, given how common the name is. Why would they have to confirm it was another Jose Fernandez. Those who did the news conference stated that many have seen Jose and other Marlins on that boat. And a few occasions during safety inspections. It is somewhat odd they inform the Marlins before next of kin which is the way notification is to be done.

They couldn't just assume it was Jose Fernandez and then release that info if it wasn't him. Yeah, not big enough of an impact to mangle a face or body

And a few occasions during safety inspections. It is somewhat odd they inform the Marlins before next of kin which is the way notification is to be done. dealing with the death of a famous MLB star is a little different than the death of an average joe. I think informing the next of kin is secondary even though it shouldn't be. Or they informed both the next of kin and the Marlins, knowing how big of a news story this would be.
September 26, 20169 yr It is somewhat odd they inform the Marlins before next of kin which is the way notification is to be done. In a way, it may be a good thing here though. Jose's family was so intertwined with the fish that getting the call from Hill or Samson may be better than some random authority.
September 26, 20169 yr I can't explain the sadness that I feel. I never met him personally but it feels like a close friend has died. I'm in shock. I couldn't believe the news. It still doesn't feel real to me. I stayed away from the news yesterday and I avoided all of the clips. It was just too tough for me to watch. Just this morning I was able to watch some clips from the press conference and the players comments. Jose was bigger than just the Marlins. He was our Superstar and one of the best players in all of MLB. However, the main reason everyone cheered for him, including other teams, was because of his love of the game and his love for life in general. He was a humble superstar and that is a rare thing in sports. The Marlins have not been a good baseball team for a while now, but there was always Jose Day to make things better. There was always the hope that with Jose here the franchise would be able to turn the corner eventually. None of that matters today. More than losing a great player, this city has lost a wonderful human being. Even people that don't follow baseball or the Marlins are talking about this tragedy. The entire city is mourning this loss. On a different note. I've been active on this site for a while but I stopped participating a few weeks ago because in my opinion the site was just so negative on the team and the players that it wasn't as enjoyable to participate anymore. I regret that now as I can see that this is the only place where others like myself are feeling what I feel. Where we can all share openly and understand one another because we are all so vested in this team and these players. Admin, thank you for making this place possible. Thank you for all that you do and have done for us Marlins fans.

On today's game, I don't know how these guys are going to be able to play today... Being thrown out of a car at speeds around 45 mph or more would cause severe trauma and make identification hard. Same thing in a boat when it is hitting something that is going to stop all forward movement. All that is stated as it was at a high rate of speed. And somewhere I read that the boat is capable of 55 to 65 mph depending on the motor. We know that it had two motors so the motors had to pretty sizable to attain that speed. And although this boat was used for fishing, it wouldn't need to go over 45 mph or more to accomplish going fishing. It was also used for speed. And remember the ocean has waves which are like a speed bump is to a car. So I assume that has to be factored in.
