Jose Fernandez dies in boating accident

Featured Replies

Ken Rosenthal is saying to have a Spirit/passion/emotion award to honor Jose. Similar to the Clemente award for humanitarian.

One player per team gets that award.

Ehhhh I don't like where this is heading.

Well, we still don't have all of the details yet. There is still a chance that this was just an accident, although what we are currently hearing doesn't paint a very good picture.

Well, as soon as I learned that it was a boating accident around 3am on Saturday night, I had a suspicion that it would head in this direction. Drinking/partying isn't the only explanation, but it is the most likely one.

If alcohol was involved, it doesn't in any way tarnish his image to me. Let's remember that most of us, know what its like to be 24.

Jose did not own this boat, correct?  I mean when the tox results come back they'd know which ones were drinking.  I guess you hold out hope that one of them was relatively sober which would suggest that he was the one driving.  But not really knowing these guys I don't know how likely that is.  I'm not sure there's any way to be sure there who was operating the boat.

This isn't Pirates of the Caribbean. Who cares who the captain was?

Maybe because the "captain" is responsible for its crew??!  I think everyone will agree, that the scenario of Jose drinking not being the captain is a lot better than Jose drinking and being the captain.

It's reported that he indeed was the owner of the boat.

Whatever happened, it is what it is and it's not bringing them back.

I'm not justifying BUI or DUI or anything like that, but to me it's not like it turns Jose and Co. into some kind of despicable monsters.

If it is what we suspect, was it irresponsible and reckless? Absolutely. Will the accident become even more of a cautionary tale to hopefully prevent somebody from making a similar choice? Yes.

Mistakes were made and they paid the ultimate price.

Yeah. Mostly this. Not surprising. It's easy to forget he was a rich 24 year old in Miami....

Just terrible though. At end of the day its still horribly tragic.

Doesn't take away from his incredible story. The elite athlete. And amazing on field persona.

I don't remember the last time I wasn't drunk on a boat...the speeding and lack of visibility were probably more contributing factors.

He's a 24 year old. He and his friends probably don't care much for boat etiquette or whatever you call that. It's a car that drives in the water.

Who is the captain? The one who was wearing a furry hat and a parrot on his shoulder? Gtfo

If that's what you think is right, and further that's what you envision when you think the word captain, whom I am to tell you otherwise.. You're beyond reproach

It has been reported now that the boat was registered to Jose Fernandez.  But it was originally reported the boat belonged to another.  Maybe the friend had one and then Jose bought one.  But it really doesn't matter who owned, but now who was driving.

At the end of the day, they just didnt see those rocks. And even if they were NOT under the influence they probably would have still crashed into em. The mistake was going out at night running at high speed. That was the killshot

Hi guys, I am A Washington Nationals fan who felt compelled to sign up and show my support during this horrible time For Marlins fans,  baseball as a community and most importantly Jose's family and friends. As a baseball fan I hated facing the guy, he was an unbelievable player and that game he tossed against us last week was just amazing. He seemed a larger than life character.

There is no words to make anybody feel better at this terrible time, but I wanted to send my best wishes to you all

thank you for your kind words and support. This is a time when we can all come together, not just as baseball fans, but as human beings to mourn the loss of one amazing soul. You're a good person Fonzie, and I hope everyone across the nation has Jose and his family in their hearts.
