Jose Fernandez dies in boating accident

Featured Replies

Has anyone asked this or found an answer to why Jose chose #16 to begin with? Was there a specific reason behind it?

It was his number in high school.  Diaz of St. Louis Cardinals would know if there is a tie in Cuba.  Any idea how to get a hold of him??

I hope it doesn't upset anyone by posing this question but having now accepted what has happened after several days of shock, I'm starting to think about the baseball implications of this tragic event.

It was obviously going to be incredibly hard to sign Jose long term in Miami although I always remained hopeful that his love for the city would keep him here. If we weren't able to sign him, it would have been more likely that we would have traded Jose after the 2017 season (Yankees and Dodgers were names I saw linked most) however hypothetically if we had traded him this offseason, what do you guys reckon we would have received in return?

Again I know this is a very touchy subject and talking about Jose in this manner now is a bit strange, so if a mod feels this question is inappropriate, please feel free to delete it.

I agree it's touchy, but it needs to be discussed at some point. The uncanny thing in all of this is that I think there would have been a reasonable chance that Fernandez would have been dealt in the offseason, but even more likely after 2017.

But that shouldn't mitigate the current sentiments and everything the Marlins are doing to memorialize him.

Only way Jose would've signed long term in Miami is with another owner. Loria didn't have the money to spend $250 million on Fernandez after throwing $325 million Stanton's way. Like you said, he would've been traded in the 2017 offseason.

As for a potential trade:

Marlins asked the Red Sox for Betts, Moncada, Rodriguez, Vazquez, and a pitcher. Basically a king's ransom.

Marlins asked the Dodgers for Seager, Urias, and Pederson from the Dodgers. A more realistic trade moving forward would've been a deal centered around Urias, De Leon, and possible one more high tier prospects along with lower tiered ones.

I don't remember the Marlins talking with the Yankees, but I would've had to assume they'd ask for Aaron Judge, Clint Frazier, and Jorge Mateo.

A future Jose trade was what the Marlins would've used to restock the top of the farm system very soon.

Poor bastard :/ I can't stop thinking about how he went from being at the top of the world to dying so quickly. It serves as a reminder that you take nothing to the other side.

In Delaware for work so made the couple hour drive to DC for the game last night. Rain sucked. But National fans were all fantastic. Can't tell you the amount of totally random conversations with Nats fans saying how much they loved Jose/people just coming up to me or any of the other marlin fans walking around. He was truly a fan favorite for everyone. Not just Marlin fans.

It took me 2 or 3 days since I posted to cry about it. I couldn't stop thinking about it until then. Stuff like this hits me very hard. Especially when it's a young person around your age. First time something like that happened to me was a few years ago with a coworker who was very much like Jose as the happiest person there. One day they there are there and the next they're not. It's shocking for me. This made me very depressed. It probably didn't help that it was all over the news and on my Facebook feed. Not that it shouldn't have been. Worst of all it's right where me and friends had first gone fishing off that pier by the jetty a few months ago...and then seeing those images of the boat. Even though I haven't been able to fully take in all the rest of the remembrance ceremonies and services because it's difficult, it has made me feel a lot better to see and hear how much he meant to others.

Yeah our early morning convo on facebook where we didn't want to believe it.

I was actually in the bathroom scrolling through Twitter when a Bucs reported I follow had retweeted Andy Slater. Messaged both yourself and Michael when I couldn't see any other reporters mention it at that early stage.

Question, is it just me or are people jumping the gun on the retiring of Jose's number? I keep reading that the Marlins have already retired it and or said that it will be retired but I'm 99% sure that the team hasn't said anything officially. They've only said phrases that hint towards it like when Loria said he can't see anyone else wearing that number. I know it will be retired and it's only the official wording that I'm asking about but I've been told by quite a few people that it's already happened and I'm pretty sure none of those people know about this team more than I do.

Went through the drive-thru at Whataburger on Friday night (I live out in Phoenix, AZ) and when I handed the woman my card (Bank of America Marlins card) she just started talking about Jose and how her and her mother watched the news on Sunday and Monday and wept all day when they watched the game.

Awesome. Impact felt throughout the country. Beautiful. Also I have the same credit card lol

don't know if this has been posted ,but I noticed today a few Giants players were earing Jose initials and #16 in their cap, Angel Pagan wears #16 and JF was written on the #6

Just saw on MLB trade rumors that the Marlins will have the 14th pick in next years draft.  How eerie is that?
