Jose Fernandez dies in boating accident

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I'm a Cardinals fan who signed up to give my condolences. Our team lost Oscar Taveras a couple years ago. Granted, the circumstances were different; Taveras was being an idiot by speeding while drunk taking a selfie without a seat belt. Fernandez was just enjoying a boat trip. But I can relate in the fact that both of our teams lost someone who may have been a fixture in the organization for years to come. From the little I saw of Fernandez, he seemed to be such a carefree, fun-loving guy, and that makes this even more depressing. Everyone in baseball is wishing your team the best during this tragic time.

Thank you, it is appreciated.

I hate to mention this, but I am.  One factor not brought up is liability.  It is now known it was Jose's boat. Comments are flying that he was very upset, and his friend/friends were trying him to cool off.  At this time it hasn't been leaked/made public why he was upset.  If it is found that Jose had been drinking and driving, then the families of the other two may sue Jose's estate.  And not sure if a real slick attorney could sue the Marlins organization for negligence as it has been stated the Marlins have worried about his off field behavior.  Remember one family have a GoFundMe account to  raise funeral expenses.  It was originally set at $10K and now asking $30K.  Last time I checked it was funded at $28K.

Just read that the bag did not appear to belong to Fernandez or the other two guys on the boat. Weird...

Still doesn't feel real . On a trip right now, at the Angels game, caught the end of the game on a tv here n teared up a little. Fuck

I still want to be arguing the contract he was bound to receive in free agency, what team would get Jose in a trade (and when), what prospects we could receive to rebuild our farm system in it and just how damn good Jose would ultimately be pitching in a playoff series.

I really hope all this weirdness end with Jose actually being alive in Cuba or something.

Not joking, I wouldn't even be mad. I'd be ecstatic! And now....back to reality.

The Marlins haven't been a good team for a long while and we have just lost one if the few players who could make us great but despite all this, watching last night till nearly 4am in the UK, made me realise how proud I am to support this team.

Same here, every season since iv been in the UK (2005) iv stayed up until about 3 am, sometimes 3:45 to watch my Marlins. My memory of Jose is staying up late at night (as usually) and seeing his energy and positiveness, we would be down like 4-1 in the 6th, my thoughts would ah , game over....and I would see Jose laughing and joking around (on his pitching day!) almost like he knew his team mates would pick him up and score runs. And they did! He taught me to be abit more positive about things. All this from 5,000 miles away, I can only imagine what it was like to know him in person.

I have this nagging thought why nothing has been said about the girl friend.  That is, no visit to her mentioned about offering condolences on loss of Jose.  And it has been reported on how down he was that Saturday night needing his friends.  I hate to speculate but wonder if they broke up??  I would have thought she would have been at the grandmother's house on Sunday consoling each other.

She's simply been staying away from the media.  It was reported that they might have gotten into an argument, as reported by the Herald but honestly, an argument is nothing out of norm especially with the emotions involved with pregnancy.  Also, who's to say she wasn't at Jose grandmas house?

Apparently there's going to be a public viewing on Thursday for the fans.
