Jose Fernandez dies in boating accident

Featured Replies

Only thing worse than this would be inviting Tommy Hutton back to cry with Rich.

When Steve Irwin died, I didn't believe it. Felt sort of the same way this time.

I can't expressed how fucking pissed I am that he didn't take a contract. Boras fucked his family. When you get set for life money, you don't hold out for more. You take that shit at 24 and tell your agent to go fuck himself. Injury, death, whatever. Shit happens. Now his fiance is broken and pregnant. While I'm sure they will be ok, as will his other family, it doesn't compare to what could have been provided. His poor unborn kid...fuck. His mom is going to see Jose everyday once it's born. What a horrible situation.

I know you're upset brother but no one could have predicted this. It wasn't wrong for Boras to assume Jose's payday was coming in the next couple of years.

jose had career earnings of $6.5M, and that's not including all the endorsement deals and commercials he did. I'm hoping that's enough to take care of his entire family financially.

All the players are now putting their messages on social media. Can't cope with this as a fan so no idea how they are feeling as friends and team mates.

They are probably feeling a sort of denial right now. It probably hasn't really hit most of them yet and probably won't completely hit them until they take the field tomorrow.

Just watched the video of the Coast Guard official laughing. As a member of the Coast Guard, I am disgusted by that. She was a Captain as well, which means she's been in for at least 20 years.

you know it's a tough situation. Dealing with a death is one of the hardest things, and sometimes adding a little humor helps the healing process. Still not a fan of it, but I get it

She's got no connection so there should be zero emotion show, no crying, laughing, etc.

Especially when it's an event as huge as this you control yourself in the most respectful manner.

That coast guard lady wasn't in any setting to be laughing. She wasn't laughing like Jose's teammates remembering the good times she was laughing in a moment where her job is so be remorseful and sensitive and she wasn't. Horrible timing. She wasn't laughing about Jose either she was laughing at who knows what like if the Jose news wasn't important.

I woke up to this news just about 45 minutes ago. I've been shaking and crying since that time. There aren't any words that can be used to describe this right now. Like a few others have said here, it feels like I lost a family member.

I'll share a small Jose story. Not really a personal one, but one that showed me what kind of competitor he was, as if we needed more of a reminder.

In 2014 during my Spring Break, instead of going to the beach like many others would (I was just an hour and change from Daytona), I decided to head down to Jupiter and watch some baseball games. I went to four that week, and I got the privilege of seeing Jose pitch in two of them. Both games in the first inning, he was pitching (not throwing, pitching) his fastballs at 99 mph, with location. I couldn't help but think, if this is how he's treating his Spring starts, what's he going to do when the games matter? Lo and behold, he was off to an historic beginning that year before the eventual TJS.

Another small story. From a little time after he debuted, he became my mother's favorite pitcher (and mine as well), due to his fun attitude and incredible ability. As I posted last year, she passed away in July, just a couple weeks prior to her birthday. As it would so happen, Jose's turn in the rotation was on her birthday, and he pitched well like he always did.

This one hurts, and it hurts bad. I agree, retire number 16.

Rest in Peace, Jose.

I can't believe it so far .My heart with Marlins, with Jose and with his family .Jose is absolutely the the best for me .It's too sad,but now Jose is ForeverMarlin...

I cant imagine what Jose is going through right now in the after life.Probably wishing he never went on that boat and wishing he was back on earth with his family.Probably thinking what his career on earth could of been. Its so sad.

I woke up to an "RIP Jose" text, and thought it was an exaggeration because he'd been injured. Worst case scenario, I thought, was another Tommy John. I wish he were getting another Tommy John.
