Jose Fernandez dies in boating accident

Did any players speak?

Just Prado who was at the table with Hill, Samson and Mattingly

God bless all of you on here guys. We're talking about Jose and his family and the team and that's important but we on here are a special kind of team as well and I love that we can come on here and help support each other through this tragedy. Love this site and love being part of this family through the good and the bad.

I lost it with Don and Hill.

yeah I was okay until then.  I mean after every start Jose was there pleading "c'mon coach one more inning!"  and then pouts away to the other end of the dugout, only to wander back over a minute later to Mattingly with a big hug.  And Mike Hill has been there for every moment of his time here.

There's a scene in the movie "The Rookie": Jim Morris almost quits, then he happens by a little league game. He comes into the clubhouse the next day, renewed, and says something like "You know what we get to do today? We get to play baseball!" Jose was like that, every day. A lot of people mistook his enthusiasm, thinking he was showing them up at times. He sparred with managers and coaches trying to remove him from games, because he never wanted to leave the mound. He got hurt because he refused to let anyone know something was wrong until it was way too late, because he didn't want to miss a start or two after being hit by a line drive. There have been tragedies - even Cuban ones like Oscar Tavares - but the last All-Star-in-his-prime player was Thurman Munson, and it took the Yankees 15 years to replace him.

Totally shocked when I first heard this, still can't believe it. That Marlins press conference wow. Lost it a little when the camera came backwards to show the entire team and when Donny spoke. Samson did a really nice job too.

RIP Jose Fernandez. Loved watching you play. Best teammate EVER!

This is the hardest I've ever dealt with a death that wasn't a family member. This really, really stings.

I can't even see this team being relevant again for years. Jose was so fucking important. He was the reason to watch the Marlins.

Jose was Baseball in Miami/South Florida.

You made me smile bro lol good work.

I'm serious, I legit like the guy. Moments like these show that these guys are human too. This whole day sucks.

With Hill and Don breaking down, I'm sure they were amongst the decision makers in terms of pushing Jose's start back a day. Don't think that's not weighing on them still.

You know I was just thinking that, what if they had not pushed back his start until mon. Would Jose had been on that boat?
