May 20, 20188 yr yep, if Stanton didn't put people in there last year then Machado sure as shit ain't going to put more people in the seats. For all his faults, Stanton is a more "exciting" player for the casual fan to get hyped up over because there just aren't many who have ever been able to do what he does - (insert 5k's joke here) hit nearly 500ft blasts. Except that Stanton was putting people in the seats. The marlins aren’t going to be in the middle level of attendance in baseball until they consistently win. Especially more towards the end of the year. Fans were getting excited about the Stanton led marlins. With a few moves to make them competitive the fan base would have kept growing. All the fans that started coming back or that were becoming Marlin fans bc of Jose or Stanton are now all gone again. The team needs to build from within but signing machado wouldn’t be a bad idea. Similar to the nats when they signed Werth or the braves with markakis. They signed those guys when the team was rebuilding but when the rams became competitive they were contributors.
May 20, 20188 yr Except that Stanton was putting people in the seats. Erm ... ... was he? He was chasing 60 homers, something only five individuals have ever done in a season [some more than once], and still there were so many massive gaps in the crowds.

He was chasing 60 homers, something only five individuals have ever done in a season [some more than once], and still there were so many massive gaps in the crowds. It was still an increase from it had been earlier in the season and previous seasons over that last run. I went to most of those games myself and the atmosphere felt different. Electric.

Electric. Sure, he popped the crowd that was there, but how much of an increase was it really? Should have been near sell-outs all the time. Truth be told it may have helped had his barrage started earlier - he had 26 by the all-star break, which is a lot, but still away from the realms of 60 being a possibility. Had his 18 homers month occurred in, say, May, then people would have caught on a lot faster.
May 20, 20188 yr This team would be stupid to pay Manny Machado all that money when they're not even close to being a contending team.
May 20, 20188 yr Author This team would be stupid to pay Manny Machado all that money when they're not even close to being a contending team. It's almost a perfect example of something Loria would try and is thus a great test for Jeter. I think I'd feel more comfortable going forward if I hear that Jeter wants no part of Machado because of the timing of his free agency.

May 20, 20188 yr I'd love it if we could sign Machado. It can be our Jayson Werth signing, maybe about a year or two early.

I think I'd feel more comfortable going forward if I hear that Jeter wants no part of Machado because of the timing of his free agency. Loria wouldnt sign Manny because he isnt on the wrong side of 30 with more bad years ahead of him than good years. So no, not really a Loria signing except in the big name splash.
May 23, 20188 yr Marlins should make a serious run at Manny. Pay him his bucks, make him the face of your franchise, build around him. Get good, find pitching, compete with Braves for titles. it would be a brillant and anti marlins move. I would give them serious props if they went out and spent money smartly for a change.
May 23, 20188 yr I like the idea of it, but they just got rid of Stanton's contract, and Machado is going to have around the same contract, no? At that point, aside from the "Miami kid" argument, why trade Stanton if you're just going to give another guy a huge contract? I suppose it won't be as long of a contract perhaps, and include an opt out or two?

Says the guy who constantly criticized Stanton’s contract.
May 23, 20188 yr or they could have easily retained Yelich....would be really stupid to ditch Yelich and then dump Stanton for pennies on the dollar and then take on a brand new giant contract for someone who won't bring any extra fans to games. i can't believe this thread even exists
May 23, 20188 yr i can't believe this thread even exists You should blame the writer of the article if you don't like the idea, not the user who posted the thread. All he did was share an article from a major publication. Also, guess what? It is ok for others to have a different opinion than you and discuss it.

No one will bring enough fans to the park, but that is not the reason it should be used so often as the ultimate closing arguement. Might as well just say to do nothing forever. At some point, the team will have to spend, even if it doesn't propel attendance, to have a winner and then win first ahead of attendance issues. This is more about the concept of anyone being considered being discounted because it will not bring fans, not specifically towards getting or not going after Machado. The same has been said about dumping Castro and JT because we may lose five more games and not affect attendance-so why keep them. More of this argument was in the spring, but as we play the games now, isn't it better to have a few players with major league ability like Starlin and JT and Bour than filling the team with junk because it won't affect attendance and we are not winning any titles soon? We dumped our best players and we still do not know if the return will ever be any good. Funny, so far, the best return was a minor deal which brought Caleb Smith. If this concept of tanking it, like a bunch of teams are doing, takes hold and only 25% of the teams are really trying, MLB may, along with the players association, take action. They say no at this time, but this is a professional league and if it ends up being filled with 75% of the teams being hopeless, it will not be only the Marlins attendance the sport will have to worry about.

May 23, 20188 yr someone is on the rag this week. yeesh you are really looking into my comments a bit too deep if you're in any way offended Nice misogynistic comment from you. Classy and totally warranted. Also about on par for a 13-year old! I am not the one who posted the topic so why would I be the one offended? I doubt the topic starter is offended either, but your implication was pretty damn clear. You don't think this topic should be here because it goes against your thinking process. Funny enough, the topic starter and I both agreed this wouldn't be a good move for the Marlins so we actually agree with you on that. We just managed to say it in a civil and productive manner. Your mommy and daddy need to teach you some manners.

May 23, 20188 yr Yeesh, my dude, you good? Getting a little testy here lately. It apparently is my time of the month according to that kid.
May 24, 20188 yr We shouldn't listen to Cote because he looks like Loria. Now this is a funny comment, good one.
May 24, 20188 yr We're trying to rebuild our minor league system. The players it would take to land Machado would just set us back right back to where we were. It would probably take JT Realmuto plus 2-3 of our better prospects. I like the idea because yea, he's from Hialeah. Yea he's 3 years younger than Stanton at 25 instead of 28. And he's sick defensively at a more important and difficult position to play. When you consider defense and offense Machado really is one of the best in the game. But it's not the time for something like that. Maybe in like two years we can sign someone like that to be the face of our franchise, but preferably through FA and not a trade. Just wipes out so many assets in the process. Would much rather we spend all that money on intl free agents and drafts etc

May 25, 20188 yr He's going to be a free agent, this was about signing him in the off-season -- not trading for him. I have a hard time believing that the team that trades for him won't lock him up immediately or have some type of agreement in place considering the assets it'll take to land him from the Orioles. In regards to Realmuto extention, I'm on board with that big time. https://www.mlb.com/marlins/news/jt-realmuto-is-baseballs-most-athletic-catcher/c-238865506 https://www.mlb.com/marlins/video/statcast-realmuto-nabs-rosario/c-2075871183?tid=240568594 On top of the fact that he's the fastest catcher in baseball, he currently has the highest avg at .316, the 2nd highest OPS at .913 and highest WAR at 1.7 among all catchers. And in that video of him throwing out Rosario, he posted the fastest pop time (time from catcher's mitt to 2nd base) since 2015 which was when statcast started recording that data and he's consistently tops in the league in that category. He also has the 2 top pop times to 3rd base ever recorded. Having a .900 OPS catcher, that's also the fastest on the bases and has the best pop time/throwing speed? He's probably the most underrated player in the league by fans and media. I don't expect JT to stay a .900 OPS hitter all season but he's entering his prime and his growth has been steady and consistent. Since 2014 his OPS has been .611, .696, .771, and last year .783. I can easily see him being a .850+ OPS hitter this year and the next 2-3. That combo is so hard to find. Only problem for JT is that he's not a UFA until 2021 when he's 30. But players get paid big bucks in 2nd and 3rd year of arbitration nowadays. You can control him that year but it doesn't necessarily mean it's a bargain. Many players are making 10-15M+ 3rd year arb. Josh Donaldson just got 23M... Marlins will have to decide to commit to him soon for the next 5 years or trade him when he gets some exposure. If he keeps this up and doesn't make the all-star team it'll be a sham. But given how people love to hate the Marlins and we get no nationally televised games or media exposure (understandable of course) it might happen that he goes generally unnoticed by the masses once again. Only positive is that we can use that and his lower overall perceived market value to strike a deal.
