I disagree, any downtick in production from Realmuto (this includes pacing as a 3.5 WAR player) lowers his value based on production, and amount of service time (games) an acquiring team gets. He's not making enough money to have the Marlins covering April-July money sway things.

 

It was a gamble not to extend him or trade him prior to 2018 in a rebuild situation. Don't count on hitting pocket aces twice in a row. 

 

It's 5/$80 or trade him to me. Nothing else.

 

They'll get the value for him, I am assuming they are just holding out as Bryce/Machado/Grandal/Keuchel/Pollock/Grandal are still out there and someone could be desperate if they whiff on everyone.

That's a fair point.  And I'm not advocating settling for a bag of balls just to trade now.  If you don't have a reasonable offer now, no don't trade him.  But if there are several realistic offers on the table now, I think you hold out as long as possible (as they've been doing) for the overpay, but "settle" for the reasonable deal if it's there before opening day.

 

If teams are offering crap/well under value, obviously you hold onto him until the deadline when teams are desperate and hope he doesn't get hurt/forget how to hit/defend.

Maybe it isn't crazy to trade him for a bag of balls. Didn't Jeter keep the roof open to save money on the AC bill this season? Maybe they could use Realmuto to stock up on baseballs for the upcoming season?

The Angels signed Lucroy to a 1 year deal, wihich takes both a catching option and a fringe suitor for JT off the table.

Rotoworld - Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports the Astros and Marlins are still in touch regarding a potential J.T Realmuto swap.

 

The Marlins are demanding either pitcher Forrest Whitley or outfielder Kyle Tucker to headline the return package and the Astros are not willing to part with either of them. Both Whitley and Tucker are consensus top-10 prospects in all of baseball and both are on the cusp of the major leagues. The Astros signed backstop Robinson Chirinos to a one-year, $5.75 million contract last month to replace Brian McCann, who left as a free agent and signed with the Braves. They would surely be happy to slide Chirinos into a backup role if they are able to snag Realmuto to be their starter. The Padres, Dodgers, Reds and Rays are also known to have negotiated with the Marlins regarding Realmuto in recent weeks.

Agreed. If all we're getting offered are the type of returns we got for Ozuna or Stanton then I'm confident we can still get that type of return even when there are less suitors or before the trade deadline. There's no reason to not wait and hold out and hope someone pulls the trigger and gives us a top prospect. JT is absolutely worth it and any team rumored to get him has the funds to sign him long-term.

 

If you read the comments on twitter it's basically a bunch of fans from all the teams rumored to be interested saying some version of how the Marlins got a bad deal in the Stanton or Yelich trades so why are they being so hard to deal with now, should just accept what they're being offered. Sports fans are so dumb sometimes, they're basically answering their own question. If we wanted another mediocre haul, we can do it whenever the eff we want. Pay up or shut up. Fortunately there are actually a few fans that realize how good JT really is. I think we get something done with Dodgers or Astors at the end of the day.

Isn't it kind of a wash, really? Sure, we lose one more team that may have tried to get JT, but as you say, there's now more urgency as there are less available catchers. Should be a net zero situation.

I don't know about a wash, might even be an advantage for the Marlins. If the remaining teams need a catcher and they no longer have backup options like Lucroy Grandal Ramos McCann etc then they might be more likely to give in on Realmuto.

Yeah, that's true. And any team that wants him can't throw it against us of, "there's less teams going for him now," because we can respond with, "we don't HAVE to trade him right now."

Wasnt even aware the the Angels and/or Lucroy mean anything to the Realmuto conversation in 2019.  

 

Last year was ummmm pretty fucking bad for Lucroy.  And the Angels have no farm.  Anyone in on Realmuto would only have gone after Lucroy if there was literally no other option. Maybe.  

 

 

I think it's a simple concept for the Astros, which one would have the most impact to their battle to the WS in the next two seasons ? JT, Whitley or Tucker ? I believe Luhnow knows the answer.
