Marlins Park atmosphere is worse than ever

Featured Replies

So I attended the Marlins-Cardinals game this past Monday night. Ive been to dozens of Marlins games over the years (at the old stadium and new) and have to say this was the least immersed in the game as I have ever been. I'm used to the small crowds, but on Monday night you could literally hear a pin drop in the stadium. Of the people that were there, a VAST majority were rooting for the Cardinals, to the point that I would've felt awkward by just standing up and cheering "Lets Go Marlins".

This isn't a shot at the attendance numbers, those have always been atrocious. I'm more taken aback by the absolute lack of baseball environment or "buzz" during the game. It almost felt like there was some other purpose to be sitting there and the game just dragging along in the background.

I don't know what the answers are for Jeter & Co. to turn this around, but rooting for the home team at Marlins Park is more embarrassing than ever before.

I've been to a lot of Marlins game....that was by far the worst ballpark atmosphere I've seen.

This isn't a post meant to just "crap on the Marlins"...I was genuinely let down after attending the game lol

Do you remember who won or lost? Or who even was playing?

Crap, I just reread the post and saw where he said it was a Marlins-Cardinals game. He does remember who was playing, thus he had a lousy ballpark experience #FuckJeter

Ballpark atmosphere in terms of the on field product (as in nothing to do with concessions and music and other between innings entertainment) is very dependent on if the team is good (or at least playing well such as a few weeks ago) and on how much offense there is.

There isn't much that can be done when the team stinks and isn't scoring runs.

And I say about scoring runs because we could be a one hundred loss team and the home fans will still be invested in an individual game if they see home runs and multiple baserunners as those things create more exciting on field situations even if the team ultimately loses.

<insert Stanton chasing 60 home runs argument>

It was also a Monday game vs a team with a strong fanbase.

Go for it... this isn't about attendance as those Stanton games didn't increase attendance but if you were at those games there was more on field excitement even if there was just 10,000 people there.

The type of game offensively makes all the difference in atmosphere. I've seen it a thousand times both ways.

Different issue as has already been pointed out.

I have to agree, I've always been the kind of guy that stays the full 9 innings, but I've left every single game early that I've been to the past two seasons. Complete Drag.

I think what SilverBullet is trying to say is, if you go to Marlins Park Mon-Wed and they’re playing Cubs/Cardinals/Yankees/Mets/Dodgers/Braves/Phillies/Red Sox, don’t expect to feel like you’re at a Miami Marlins home game.

I went last Friday and we were down big early.  The atmosphere also sucked, mostly because the Marlins are sucking.  But to improve the experience, I suggest the standing room only section and turn your back on the game so you could look out the panoramic view of downtown Miami.  I understand the front office felt this was another big draw.  If you had a bad time, you probably did not engage socially with other fans.

Remember this from our now departed Chipper:

“One of our priorities for this offseason was enhancing the group and social spaces at the ballpark,” Bowers said. “We have been able to accomplish that goal with the addition of the aforementioned concepts as well as the expansion of the viewing platform at the Budweiser Bow Tie Bar. In addition, we wanted to utilize these spaces to create a sense of community and encourage social engagement among fans.”

I agree a lot on this. The park is so dull and boring with the dark blue and no home run sculpture and the stupid ass spanglish shit. Not a fan

But not the fact that the team often times is as exciting to watch as a snail race?

I wish it was just a traditional ballpark experience. Keep the walkup songs and mid inning organ, drop the dancers, spanglish, mid inning games/segements, and latin music.

If the team sucks then so be it. Obviously that needs to be fixed, but all the nonsense on the side is a slap in the face. Just let me watch my shitty team in peace.

No way, man. You need to ascend, brother. Cleanse yourself of this fantasy world of "just enjoying the game."

I just want you to be better, friend.

You'll have plenty of people who consider the traditional ballpark experience boring though. Especially in a city like this where there are so many cultures represented, so many other fanbases represented, and honestly so many other entertainment options as well. Gotta do things to try and make the place fun beyond the on field product. If they don't and just keep it "traditional" you'll have a lot of people complaining that they don't try and do more either... especially when the team sucks.

With that said, not all of it is nonsense... what team doesn't do mid inning entertainment segments these days? Would you rather watch the defense do their warm up throws in complete silence? And what's wrong with Latin music? It's popular music in this city. It's not all bad music and enough people like it.

I don't care about casuals tho. I spit on them. *ptui* *ptui* The Marlins are for you and me and our ilk. Reclaim your birthright.

Complete silence sounds good actually. Watch a game at Wrigley or Fenway if you get the chance. If you must, at most there should be an organ rendition of a 60's pop classic. Latin music is too repetitive for me. bum tabum ta, bum tabum ta...

I like where your head is at but the current ballpark experience is the physical manifestation of the Marvel aesthetic. My version is Tarkovskyian.

Hey I appreciate all the responses. I see that a lot of you have had similar experiences at the ballpark. I'm just as tired of the attendance narrative that infects everything Marlins. This was never meant to come as another complaint in a long line of them. I was genuinely dejected leaving the stadium. I agree with all the factors (Monday game vs cardinals with no runs), but the place was LIFELESS.

I agree in general with Jeter's plan to rebuild the farm system....I'm just not sure how much longer baseball in Miami can go on like this.

It was those damn blue walls.
