August 31, 20206 yr I like the Conine addition but I'm gonna have to keep believing there is more to the attitude discussion. We're in a playoff push and Villar is still a good MLB player, they didn't need to part with him for a single prospect who isn't even a top 100 type of guy. It really feels like they wanted Villar off the team.

August 31, 20206 yr Today really proves the importance of depth too... and I'm talking REAL depth not the crap we thought we had under Loria. We traded guys to get better because we know we have MULTIPLE pieces able to fill in the gaps properly. It wasn't just trade Caleb and weaken the rotation to improve the lineup... it was trade Caleb because we have a line of pitchers who can easily replace him... same for Villar. Etc etc. We also didn't weaken our farm system with one trade like we've done in the past. This team is now better equipped to possibly win in 2020 BUT they're still well prepared to win down the line as well. No trades today make us a shit team a couple years from now like some deadline buyers often do. I love this.

I will say that to be fair, the lack of depth under Loria often came because of the string of his idiotic self-made moves. Trade 18 players for an obvious washed up regression imminent "name" pitcher? DO IT. Acquire a "name" when we're clearly not buyers for the team's top prospect + ? ABSOLUTELY. lol
August 31, 20206 yr I won’t defend Villar but I didn’t think he was THAT horrible considering what some of our hitting prospects are doing. Villar’s OPS was definitely low at .688 and his defense was definitely a liability, but led the league in steals at time of the trade. I do think it was an interesting trade, but I want to be happy cause everyone else seems happy about this deal. Getting son of Jeff Conine is great. Griffin’s OPS was .946 last year in minors that’s remarkable.

August 31, 20206 yr Nobody has mentioned this yet but gotta give a tip of the cap to Caleb... he was in the first trade under Jeter and Sherman. He was here since day one of this rebuild, I mean technically he was a teammate of Stanton Ozuna and Gordon for a few months here! He did a lot to hold down the rotation while we built it back up. I'm sure he would have loved to see this rebuild through and it has to suck to get traded to a last place team right now.
