August 31, 20206 yr Clarification, the rule must have been changed, like many things that have been changed this season because of all the craziness but when Markakis opted back in it was said that he did so before the deadline to opt back in. And when Diaz opted out it was said that he would not be able to return because he had opted out after the deadline. Obviously that deadline has been waived.

If you were already on the team, why would it matter if you opted in or out regardless of the date? Obviously the team will have to make a corresponding roster move to re-activate you, but otherwise, I don't see why it'd matter - just like getting someone off the IL. This has to be something deeper like not listening to the coaches or something like that. Something that's a more blatant sign of not wanting to follow along here. Very weird.

No I think I understood it at the start of the season. A team could have had a guy opt out to purposely save him to be a late addition like a secret weapon thing. That wouldn't be fair.

Of course the team should continue to acquire prospects to layer throughout the system but we just made a buyers trade to push for a playoff spot in a season where we've proven we can finally win our share of games all while many of our top prospects are starting to arrive at the majors. My point is that going into 2021 the tide has turned and we're looking to win. We aren't tanking anymore. There's no reason to go backwards at this point.

I imagine Diaz had a medical excuse (and I believe it can even be a thing like a pregnant spouse/girlfriend because Trout was considering opting out for the same reasons). And when the whole team went down, Diaz opted out. Which sounds like he got (quite understandably) spooked by the nearness of all of it. As far as I understand it, you can only opt back in if you originally opted out with a medical reason (such as high-risk status or pregnant loved one). Since the Marlins don't even announce COVID guys in general, I'm guessing they never announced the reason for the opt out.
August 31, 20206 yr Not trying to be rude but some of you keep questioning the Markakis/Diaz deadline thing. I didn't make it up. Obviously it was a thing before but now it's gone.
