Aka......they can say they'll spend money all they want, but they won't be spending money by anyone's standards.

The Marlins will likely not be in on either of them anyway, but that sure won't help keep their contract demands lower.

Yankees is always be the Yankees, Marlins is always be the Marlins, it may not change after 100 years.

Bench quality needs to be addressed for once. Anderson off the bench is a start

Doubt Marlins included because it's a list of teams engaged in the Corey Seager …

As usual, not spending on the closer even Iglesias would taking less to the Miami.

No, she said offense is a higher priority than the bullpen, with which I agree.

Well, Chapman has a heck of alot more power than BA,  and as good as I think BA is defensively, Chapman is better.

Plus he was a much better hitter before his hip surgery in 2020, and he's only 29.  Maybe he can revert back form?

If not Meyer, then perhaps McCambley or one of the other slightly lesser young arms?

There's also the option of going after Matt Olson for 1st base instead.  He's a better hitter than Chapman and a Gold Glove 1st baseman.  Not sure how many years of control he has left though.

I just think the A's make a good trade partner.  Especially since they are looking at a possible rebuild.

My problem is that it is a lateral upgrade. Sure Chapman can revert back to form, but so can BA. Much rather make an upgrade that would be a large improvement over existing options than focus on smaller upgrades like that. Same thing with 1B. The Marlins have 3 viable options at 1st base. They have zero at C and only one (who is still pretty green and a threat to regress) at CF. Plus we have no depth behind the starters at the corner OF spots.

The bigger problem was the depth. When BA went down, Isan became an everyday player. When Marte did, Mags became an everyday player. The fact that we had no depth caused 2 black holes in the lineup (catcher and pitcher) to become 4 or 5 in a hurry.

Starting to think the Marlins should pursue Trevor Story. Might be the best defensive SS available and his market might be stunted by the Coors Field stigma (which I say is overrated any way). Good fit IMO. MLBTradeRumors predicts that he will get around an AAV of $21 million. The Marlins can definitely afford that. If they say they can't, we are in a whole heap of trouble. Hopefully they are keeping their cards close to their chest and could emerge as a mystery suiter for him.

I agree in general, that I'd rather focus on big upgrades than smaller ones that teams with no holes can go after........BUT, one counterpoint to your point is that BA can move around the field, meaning if you do acquire Chapman, while that may be a lateral move over BA looking strictly at 3B, you could put BA in LF or RF and have an upgrade there, resulting in a bigger overall net gain.

I think it’s pretty clear by now they’re going to make a *big* trade for an impact bat. I actually trust their ability to make the right trade. This group has been pretty solid with trades overall.

I also wonder how seriously they’ll consider upgrading/reconfiguring 3B. We know they haven’t extended BA. I get the feeling he’s approaching Garrett Cooper territory with the injuries. It’s very possible they don’t view him as an everyday guy and they look to send him elsewhere and give someone else a look at 3rd

Notable items from the Ng interview:

Quote

Will these bats come via free agency or trade?

Ng: It could be exclusively free agency. But that's why we're talking to all these clubs, too, is to figure out who's got bats available. Until we have an understanding of the whole market, we probably won't be able to determine how that's actually going to go.

Are you in a position where spending is not necessarily going to be an issue in terms of the free-agent market?

Ng: I think we're in pursuit of some really good offensive players, so I'm excited.

It's a stellar shortstop class. Is that an avenue the organization might pursue?

Ng: Given that we signed Miguel [Rojas] for two years, I think we're pretty solid there. I think we have other needs where that's where we're focused.

The top five free-agent shortstops are Carlos Correa, Corey Seager, Trevor Story, Javier Báez and Marcus Semien.

I'd hope their "free agency" isn't scrap heap bats.

We'll see if their/her definition of "really good offensive players" and ours is the same.....

I don't disagree that there are more pressing holes than SS (CF and C, namely), but hopefully that answer about SS is just a "we're ok there if nothing happens" more than a "not even considering it".

She could be a politician the way she dances around a question. That wasn’t the question that was asked.
