Why on earth would they start over?  That would make no sense.

Though I guess nothing about the "negotiations" has made sense.

Well the players had said (perhaps via sources) they wouldn't accept expanded playoffs without full 162 game pay. So it'll be interesting to see what happens there since the expanded playoffs was something already advanced on.

Even if they did claim to start over it would be stupid because you already know what each side has agreed to so they'd just start over from what they've already negotiated.

So is this officially the group of the uber greedy piggish owners that someone on here said was probably the root problem with owners being able to come closer in agreement?

Possibly. I think they still needed three or four more to agree enough with them, but yeah I guess so. Glad Sherman isn't on that list.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/03/four-owners-reportedly-voted-against-mlbs-most-recent-cba-offer.html

MLBTR had a writeup on this, and it mentioned while only 4 went against it (they need 23 of 30 to approve to move forward, so they were at 26), that movement further in the players direction/above the $220M proposed cap, that it's possible more owners would join the "against" side - and if 3 or more flip, it's a no-go among owners.

Here's the line about it:

Obviously, the terms of that deal weren’t sufficient to get the union’s approval. Yet some of the owners who were on-board with the league’s proposal Tuesday are evidently hesitant to move any further in the players’ direction. Martino writes that the call “made it clear” that more owners would oppose any offer that pushes the base CBT threshold above the $220MM mark the league put forth. The MLBPA, meanwhile, proposed a $238MM base tax marker in 2022. Martino writes that the union refuses to entertain any offer with a 2022 tax threshold lower than $230MM.

Also from the article, some owners are worried about how freely the Dodgers and now Mets are spending as reasons to not push the CBT higher.

Drellich and Rosenthal add that some concerned owners have pointed to the spending of the Dodgers and the Mets as reasons for trepidation with pushing the luxury tax threshold further north. Martino tweets, rather unsurprisingly, that the Mets and the Yankees are among the teams open to a “less punitive” CBT setup.

---

These deals are for 4 years right?  Split the difference between 220 and 238 and make it 230M for next year, and increase it by 4% per year (or do a stepping increase of some sort - 1,2,3,4 or 2,2,3,4 ) and call it a day.

This is the group of 4 that didnt want to increase FROM 210 million!

There is supposedly another group of owners who dont want to budge from 220 million.

Manfred sucks at his job in terms of whipping up the votes end of day.

Also to note, this is also the same group of owners (minus Ilitch) that was firmly against the appointment of Rob Manfred to start with, so I'm sure there is some of THAT at play as well.

Great. Half the league makes the playoffs. Reminds me of that other American sport I don't watch because regular season games mean shit.

For now, as soon as they expand to at least 32, it'll even out a bit.

I don't like this concept of a "ghost win" where teams start up 1-0 in playoff series.

Have no idea why the expanded postseason would be a big issue in the negotiations, it seems not a big "money " related stuff.
