No but in all seriousness, if he bounces back to any semblance of his former self, it would be an incredible pickup.

Buuut, it’s the marlins so he’ll probably hit .220 and lead the team in popouts to the shortstop.

Pulled up his Baseball Reference splits. Hard to make the case that he was bad against just the AL East teams, as the sample sizes are so small. There was a huge disparity in his numbers against sub .500 teams and his numbers against teams with winning records. 

.96 ERA and .589 WHIP against losing records

8.15 ERA and 2.321 WHIP against teams with winning records

His fastball has continued to decrease in velocity over the past few years. And last year, he lost his control. He was still generating swinging strikes in the zone. He just wasn't in the zone, and hitters weren't chasing anymore.

His leverage splits suggest maybe there were some mental things going on as well.

1.034 OPS in High Leverage situations compared to .576 and .454 OPS in medium and low leverage situations.

Chapman is only 34 which isn't that old for a pitcher and he still brings plenty of heat.  He's had an outstanding career and is coming off of his only bad season. When he is right, he's filthy.  Mel has done more with less than Chapman's talent.  I have no problem taking a cheap 1 year flyer on him.

I put notable in quotes cuz I wasn't sure of the right word but the guys they've targeted the last two offseason haven't been the clearly over the hill has beens like Polanco, Furcal, Walker, Granderson, etc of years past. Let's call them players "more recently relevant." Soler, Avi, J Turner, Abreu, Josh Bell, Bellinger, Gurriel, Segura, Chapman, etc.

Not arguing the failed results, just saying this is the kind of behavior many have begged the Marlins to try after years of only going cheap and young.

It was a bad decision but it's not like he's been a head case throughout his career.  Also, he "quit" on the team after he was being inactivated for that round of the post season.  It's not like they were counting on him.  Yes, still a bad look but that probably had more to do with frustration over his performance than anything else. Last season was his first unsuccessful season and he didn't know how to deal with it.

Either way, what are we losing by signing him to a team friendly 1 yr deal?  The reward out weighs the risk, big time!

I say sign him to a heavily incentive laden deal with an option for 24, guarantee the CP spot for at least the first month or two and let him prove it.

Don't like the attitude that he had and he really hasn't been good since the crackdown on pitchers using sticky substances which, to me, seems like he was definitely using something prior to that to achieve results. 

The other concern here is that they do sign him, he sucks (as he likely will) but because they spent a lot on him (by Marlins standards) they'll keep running him out there regardless of results.

Well, lime I said, I'd take a cheap flyer on him. I'm not signing him to a large deal.  Also, I will respectfully disagree with you about him not being good since the  spidertac ban.  Last year was the first season with an ERA over 3.36.
