Though most of it is talent, or lack thereof, I still think part of the lack of success is related to Mattingly, and his lack of any urgency.......he clearly checked out early in the season. Mostly because both coaches were failed former players themselves.

October 21, 20223 yr I love how Baker was considered an awful manager who ruined Kerry Wood years ago, and is now atop one of the best managed franchises. Just goes to show how unimportant the manager is.

The bulk of managers out there are largely interchangeable so overall, yeah I'd agree it isn't super critical..... UNLESS you have a really bad one. There are some that are truly horrendous and that makes a big difference.

The offseason dictates who makes it to the postseason unless your manager is inept. Even then, some teams still make it to the postseason i.e. the Yankees. I think Aaron Boone is a doofus but here they are in the ALCS. In MLB, the GM or President of Baseball Operations is the most important figure in shaping an organization, then the owner, then the manager is a distant third.
