We got worse at 1B today by a fairly significant margin. All they had to do was get a left handed platoon bat and 1B could’ve been solved relatively cheaply in the short term. 

Bell is a career .813 .OPS guy against RHP to be fair.

I don't see any reason to have traded for Weathers as he sucks.  He's been shitty in the minors and the majors - why not just play another shitty pitcher there?

Burger seems like a truly awful guy to insert into the lineup that already struggles to get on base as it is.  I'm not that upset over Eder being moved but I just don't think Burger will do very well overall.  I read that he plays pretty shitty defense as well and I'm guessing it's because he's a big boi and probably not that mobile over there. Couple that with he's been one of the worst in MLB for two months and...yeah.  It seemingly spells disaster.

Also, the Segura "trade" was a poorly disguised salary dump.  I would have rather kept Cooper and Watson and just released Segura but Brucey didn't want to pay the money so off goes Khalil to get someone to take Segura off our hands. 

I don't see how any of these moves are going to translate to helping this club this season down the stretch at all.  The Weathers trade is still the most baffling of all to me though - it seems like a trade last year's team would have made because they could have him pitch in games that don't matter so Mel could see what he has to work with in the offseason.  There is literally no reason they needed to trade for this pile of shit.  Even for those of you saying it's because other guys will need rest - it still makes no sense because they could have called someone else up or even signed someone out of the indpendent leagues and likely not gotten a much worse, if at all, guy. 

Hope I'm 100% wrong here but I think she did a truly shitty job this deadline overall.

Fish are 14th in the majors in OBP which is slightly above average.

He just got released right after the trade by a .500 team for a reason. 

Wow. I signed off around 5 pm thinking that the Burger trade was as good as it was going to get. And I come back and am extremely surprised to see the last minute deals!

Here is my opinion on some things:

First off.. Segura is gone!!!!! That in itself is the biggest win of the season as far as I’m concerned. I’m sure he’s a great guy in real life so it’s not a personal issue with him, just as a baseball player he wasn’t performing at a MLB Level and when there’s only 30 full time 3B jobs available in MLB, he was just taking the spot from someone who could play better. Of course I think all of us would have loved to see him play as well as he did in Philly. Just wasn’t able to put it together.

Next.. Cooper being traded. Mixed feelings. When Cooper was on his game he was great to have around. When he sucked he was stressful to watch. 😂

It seems like Coopers name had been on the table for the past few trade deadlines. I remember in either 2020 or 2021 he was pretty close to going to the Dodgers. So that tells me that Cooper has been one of the expendable players and would have been gone sooner or later. Personally I preferred Gurriel at 1B. So I’m not crazy sad about him leaving to be honest. And I wish him to do really well on his new team!

 

Remember that Jeter would have forced them to keep Segura all season... Kim Ng was more willing to cut her losses and move on from him. Be thankful.

Josh Bell essentially got kicked off that same team after they traded their current ace in an effort to get a real 1B….and we traded for their crap

Bell has a sub-.700 OPS at 1B….he’s not exactly one that should be ignoring life after baseball conversations

Bell’s expected slash line this year is way better than his actual slash line. 

The Marlins are probably expecting him to hit these next two months more than Cooper. Cooper has his worst career K rate and a really bad K/BB rate.

In a perfect scenario, Cooper has looked like a platoon player this year who can hit LHP. That’s what he’s going to be doing in SD, platooning with either Cronenworth or Ji-Man Choi.

Robertson and Burger trades were solid

Weathers I’m neutral on, more of a reclamation project which is fine. Don’t think he’s with the big league club this year.

I don’t like the Bell trade. Losing Watson and adding $8 mil net next year for a marginal upgrade on Cooper is too rich

If you’re looking at this as if there’s only 2 options, keep Segura all year or celebrate his departure, I see how it’s easy to fall in the latter. 

In reality, there *should* be other options. Like, eating his salary and cutting him. Then you at least still have Khalil Watson to trade for a lottery ticket (like Ryan Weathers) 

Just bad asset management overall. I’ll give this roster a few weeks, but this feels like a shakeup for the sake of a shakeup, rather than a well thought out improvement 

I just read that Bell has an opt out clause after the 2023 season. Does that come with him ?

Bell will get 16.5 in 2024.

Segura was owed 10.5 considering the 2 mil buyout for 2025

except she didn't because he was traded and packaged with a prospect so someone would take his contract who THEN cut their losses by releasing him.

In which case, she probably wanted to dump him. He hasn’t been productive, and it seems like he’s an asshole off the field.

I actually liked the Bell acquisition at first, as to your point, he’s hit righties in the past and could provide a new look at 1B in a platoon type role. 

My issue is with the asset management. Giving up Watson to save $8M and then trading Cooper for a guy who’s never had success as a professional baseball player is bad value both short and long term. 

I would’ve rather traded Yuli for some rookie ball lottery ticket and rolled with a Bell/Cooper platoon at 1B.

She was around I think though it depends who you ask if her clock had started and if she had any input.
