That's a great summary. Cooper swinging and missing at a ton of pitches is my biggest problem with him (not to mention barely above .700 ops).

And his swing is so damn slow on top of it all that he basically has to start swinging it the exact instant the ball is out of the pitcher's hand, which basically results in him swinging at stuff a foot inside.

Did this team actually get better yesterday? I'm too stupid in my advanced age to figure that kind of stuff out anymore. Doesn't this Weathers dude kind of suck, and he was pitching at AAA? I don't get giving up Cooper for that.

Marlins were done with Cooper and Segura as well. I don't think that's said enough here. So they were gonna see what they can get for them and get it. Sure Weathers doesn't seem like a prized get but if they want Bell at first then you get whatever you can for Coop and make it work.

FYI Josh Bell is one big human being. Impressive size on that man.

Shorter than Coop though. We lost the deadline.

Weird how the big guys like Coop and Bell have the "arm strength " that bad ?

Another thing these trades do is make the upgrade path clear over the offseason. Everything is set besides SS and C - and of course the usual bullpen upgrade. Our SP is going to be in even better shape next year. Everything else is acceptable.

Indeed.

Gotta wonder who we can target behind the plate. Are the Dodgers set with Smith & Barnes to where we could take Cartaya? Struggling to hit for average in AA but he's 21 so that's young for the level. Still has power (13 homers in 321 PA).

Shortstop may be even trickier unless we can figure one out internally.

Which is why it was upsetting that despite years of low payroll, Bruce wouldn't open the purse strings for one of the big SS, because we could've crossed that off the list too.  Oh well.

Should we really happy to have Burger ? he's apparently a HR or SO hitter, incredible HR rate with incredible SO rate, is that good ?

Is he better than what we had before?  Yes. So i am happy with it.

Let's put it this way.

Jake Burger is obviously an overall offensive upgrade to Jean.

Jake Burger is also one of the worst defenders by Outs Above Average at third base. And yet ... somehow, he is still a defensive upgrade over Jean, WHO HAS A LOWER OUTS ABOVE AVERAGE.

It's a complete upgrade there.

I don't understand why we're still questioning this... didn't think even Jean Segura would bring doubters upon his departure. It was one thing with highly ranked prospects but Segura too? Wow.

I think he's a guy who is trying too hard to be a power hitter but it doesn't suit him.  He definitely needs to shorten his swing and also fix it (has a serious arch to it where its impossible for him to hit certain pitches)  And like you said, he has horrible plate discipline for someone who has been in the league so long.

My argument is that weathers isn’t close to the prospect Eder is, and we did all of that to get rid of a legitimate platoon bat at 1B and Adam Duvall (Jake Burger)

Both are 45 FV prospects, but Weathers is over a year younger than Eder.

Perhaps you wanted more ground balls? Are you not entertained by 2 pitch 1 out Joey Wendle?

The baseball fan equivalent of being an old mom, which they now call "advanced maternal age: 😅

1. Coop is a well above average hitter against lefties. He should’ve never been counted on to hit in the middle of the order every day. It has swayed the general opinion in here from he’s a useful platoon option to he’s just flat out useless.

2. It’s clear Kim and the FO targeted a young SP to replace Eder in this system. By trading Coop for Weathers, they are able to sell that they upgraded 3B and now have a similar LHP prospect to work with.

I didn't think Cooper was useless, and I don't think most here did. He just doesn't hit nearly enough for a 1B on a contending team.

Thanks for clarifying about the replacing thing. You may be right, but I can't imagine that trading a relatively long tenured Cooper for a relatively unknown Weathers was done for selling it/optics or is even good for optics. I think the motivation was that they had a reasonable replacement for Cooper, and they saw a chance to take a shot on a high-upside player.

I loved Eder before the injury, not sure how he'll turn out now. Weathers did have a very good season as a 19 year old in A ball: 5K/1BB, 3.84 ERA, ~3.20 FIP/xFIP. Given the financial constraints the team still seems to have, deals like this I think are an important tactic to try and build a strong rotation over time.

I didn’t say she/they did it for optics, it was apart of how their overall strategy. Use their big trade chip (Eder) to go upgrade 3B with a controllable bat, and then flip one of the cast off bats in the roster jam to replenish the system.

My issue is they took their one shot on essentially Adam Duvall.

And then they followed it up by trading Cooper, Reynolds and Watson and essentially got worse at 1B.

Yeah sure they got worse at 1b m8 😆
