I like the Bell acquisition. That probably puts me in the minority here. But a big man power hitting, switch hitter first baseman? If nothing else already sounds more entertaining than watching an occasional big hit every once in a while from Coop.

100% agreed. Think the writing was on the wall that he was going to be gone. And I fully accept that his value had plummeted not just here, but in the industry as a whole. 

However, I’m REALLY hard pressed to believe that they couldn’t have gotten more value out of him than including him in a salary dump for a .700 Ops first baseman 

Watson so far in three pro seasons is slashing .234 / .331 / .412.

First rounder.

This year, .210 / .337 / .390. He's not getting better. This trade was fine.

We can't keep waiting for the future and HOPING one of these guys pans out. We've been doing that for 18 years (04 and 05 weren't that way).

She was. Got hired in '20 offseason. Watson drafted 2021.

I think the question is, why not keep both? Why not let Coop keep mashing lefties, and let bell take those ABs vs righties? Coop could also be a nice platoon bat off the bench.

Not sure if that’s a good thing, but I would be surprised if he doesn’t pitch for us at all this year. 

Part of the team needs was innings pitched, and Weathers was the solution to that (again, not sure I like it).

I’m genuinely curious, beyond his “pedigree”, what points to him being a better starting option in the short term than say, Daniel Castano?

With those numbers I mentioned, let's be happy we could get anything for him.

Bruce paying all of Coopers deal as well as Bell and Robertson... we need to celebrate, Sherman not being cheap!

Just bad asset management overall. I’ll give this roster a few weeks, but this feels like a shakeup for the sake of a shakeup, rather than a well thought out improvement 

Yep, had money really NOT been an issue then Avisail and Segura would both be long gone.  You're also spot on about just releasing Segura and then trading Khalil, or even keeping him, versus just using him as a piece to get rid of Segura's contract to anyone would would take him.  That was 100% a cheapskate move and very disappointing.  I honestly don't see any meaningful improvement across the board.  They also desperately needed a SP, especially with all the innings limit talk (going into a season where nearly your entire rotation could likely end up on an innings limit is another debate for another day) and instead we get.....Ryan fucking Weathers.

Former top prospect, and an 11.5 K/9 in AAA, indicating he still has some swing & Miss stuff. He definitely hasn’t pitched well in the big leagues though. Wish we would’ve gotten a more proven arm, but whatever.

SD is saying the same thing about Ryan weathers and they got a guy OPS over .850 against lefties. A guy who can actually help them in a defined role this year.

Yeah, we’ll never know the full reason why they traded Coop. As I alluded to in an early post, it could have something like maybe Coop has been on the chopping block for awhile and just waiting for the right deal. Coop like BA and Rojas among others was a pre Ng player. Maybe the current FO is slowly replacing the Marlins long time players with their own choices in the same way they did with BA and Rojas?

Or maybe just SDP really wanted Cooper and agreed to that deal. Anyways I’m pretty sure Coop is a Southern Cal native so maybe he’s happy with the trade and having Josh Bell with Yuli Gurriel backing him up at 1B is not the worst thing in the world. So I’m content with the trade overall. Would rather keep Yuli over Coop. But that’s just me.

It's as simple as this. No Bell isn't a guaranteed win but they were done with Coop and either you keep wasting time with him or you bring in a gamble like Bell and hope he helps you more. I'm glad Kim didn't sit on her hands at a deadline where the team is literally in a playoff spot on this day.

His first 3 starts for the padres this year were pretty decent. I think the velo this year also compelling. Still has stuff but command eh
