Any ideas on what players we know will be back next year could work on to improve? I'm thinking Arraez could maybe work on his speed a bit this offseason once his ankle heals. I don't think he needs to be Luis Castillo or Juan Pierre but it would certainly help to have him work on his speed as the leadoff hitter and infielder. But I wouldn't mind even if he traded some or even all of his 10 homers for an extra 1 or 2 ft/sec in running speed. Work on speed a bit, slap the ball a bit more, like Ichiro and Luis Castillo and Juan Pierre, I think would make him even better at the top of the order. His average would go up with the increase in infield hits and could help get the basepaths moving instead of the station to station play.

This isn't a video game where you can just remove some power and bump up someone's speed lol.

Of course it isnt a video game but my point is for Arraez I rather use the offseason time to focus on improving speed than hitting 'barrels' or 'exit velo' or extra homers. Every player I think should have something they want to improve in the offseason and improving that sometimes might take away from the dedication and time they would otherwise spend on something else. My hypothetically analogy wasnt meant to be a actual trade like a video game 'i will trade x amount of power for an equal x amount of speed'. I was making a point that I think it would be better served to improve speed this offseason over hitting homeruns for a guy like Arraez. 1 extra ft/sec would be astounding to be done in one offseason, I'll tell ya that.

Yea true but when your slow as Arraez the initial gains will be much easier with proper training.

just between this year and last he lost 0.7 ft/sec, he's not old, getting that back should be attainable, plus more.

All of this said, Arraez is the least of my concerns. 

Much more concerned about Jazz and his lack of approach at the plate

 

Skip using stolen bases and putting guys in motion will literally help this offense drastically though and doing that piece is literally FREE.

Not when basically no one on the team outside of Jazz and Berti actually has the speed to steal bases.

Arraez isn't naturally fast. You can't really just "improve" your speed.

And for the sake of argument, I would much rather him hit more home runs than be a little bit faster lol.

Edwards certainly does and he'll likely be on the team next year. Fortes...maybe? You don't have to be a burner to steal bases - just need to learn to read the pitcher better and get good jumps. Not everyone on the team is as slow as Stallings.

It's not just about stealing bases.  It's about putting people in motion to avoid double plays when your contact hitters inevitably pound the next pitch into the ground.  It can also put fielders out of position who go to cover second base and maybe that ground ball makes it past the infield.

Correct - there are guys that would be running with the intention of stealing.  But most of the roster would be running with the intention of disrupting potential double plays.

I mean Fortes had a .263 OBP this season. If we're relying on him to steal bases we have a problem lol.

I agree that you don't need to be incredibly fast to steal bases, but you do need some speed, and the Marlins are probably one of the slower teams in baseball.

That's fair but I was specifically responding to the stolen bases part. If this team really wants to steal bases, they are going to have to sign guys who at least have decent speed.

I agree that you don't need to be incredibly fast to steal bases, but you do need some speed, and the Marlins are probably one of the slower teams in baseball.

Marlins are 12th in sprint speed in mlb and the other metrics have them above average in pure speed. To me it’s more a coaching decision for not moving on bases

Of course you can improve your speed. And for slow guys like Arraez they will actually improve much faster than a guy that's already fast. If speed can't be improved then why do football players train for the combine? Why do olympic sprinters bother training at all?
