I want more
Bob Rubin used to write some decent baseball. Boog will talk some on 790, but only if provoked. Most hosts claim (and rightly so) that they will talk about what the callers call in about. Apparently, the callers (except for Izzy) don't wanna talk no hardball. Speaking of which, where's the Cro? He was supposed to be back from coaching some Orientals in AZ around 9/1, but he hasn't re-appeared............

Herald reports "secret meetings" with Huizenga
"Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga has offered to sell a piece of land next to Dolphins Stadium in order for a ballpark to be built." I believe the land is leased (99 years, from the county), so it's not Wayne's to sell.

Girardi hires third-base coach
I'm not going to miss Jeff "stop sign" Cox, but the stories I've heard about him make me belive he's an incredibly nice guy, so I'll refrain from saying anything more than change is good. Yeah - real nice guy. I went to a fan-club clinic at JRS last year & he led one of the groups, instructing on basic infield skills. Surprisingly, Jeff is fluent in Spanish, because he managed in Mexico for several years.

Marlins release Riedling, Spooney, Wathan
Since Mike Hampton's contract was insured, the Braves (once again) have to pay very little of his contract next season. All in all, the Marlins and Braves made out like bandits in that trade. The Rockies will EVENTUALLY save money from it in 2006-2009. The typical insurance on a major league pitcher is somewhere in the realm of 30-35% (of the contract $$$) to pay 80% of the amount covered. So if you do the math they still will be paying at least half of what he's owed in 2006. Most player insurance policies now come with a one-year elimination period - so my guess is that the Braves will eat close to 100% of the 2006 salary. Mmmmm - tastes just like chicken........

Delgado Chooses .300 Average over Team
I am more upset although not suprised at all by Encarncion the guys effort s?cks and there is a reason why someone with all his physical gifts is merely a run of the mill player. I will be very happy when we drop his dead weight and before anyone rattles off a game or two that he got a big hit i can think of ten games to your one in which he had a chance to get a big hit and swung wildly and struck out. No discipline and no character Ency s?cks !!! Yeah - I recall his jump at the RF wall in an important game in September - seems he touched the ball and might've flicked it over. A better effort would have made the catch. Bye-bye, with no regrets here.

The Marlins should retire Jack's number
I'll tell you this - if they schedule it right, it would be an "automatic sellout".
-
great article about Jack
I'll admit it - I teared up a little bit when Jack confirmed it with Mini on the post-game interview - he said "I'm gonna miss (these fans)". It's time for change - Fredi's the one IMO.

What's the funniest/stupidest/coolest thing you've heard...
We had just beaten the Braves (I think) early in the year with a late comeback, and FSN caught some guy in the infield box section giving the Braves the "one arm salute". Cracked me up.

Rain Delay Policy
Since the delay last night was over 3 hours, can I trade in my tix for a game next year?

New stadium idea
I'm for this idea, but I spent some time trying to think of why it might not work. Devils advocate input: 1- Any shelter site would have to be built with internal, sustainable power generators. That's expensive to cool a baseball stadium. 2- I expect the land requirements will increase about 50%, to accomodate a shelter and the accompanying government requirements. OB site cannot accommodate. 3- The Marlins want to control the revenue and booking for non-baseball events. Getting the gov't involved will interfer. Discuss.

Do we REALLY want Dontrelle to win the Cy Young?
The wild card is DW's possibility of injury. Sure, he's quieted down his motion a lot, but it's still got to be more stressful than most pitchers. I love DW, but we've gotta be careful with our money. Our needs are many next year (as always), and revenue streams are uncertain at best.

He needs to work on his "Late & Close" production. Last post I saw had him under .200 RISP L&C.

Florida officials propose storm-ready stadium
It's hard for me to believe that, in the 40+ years since the Astrodome opened, that no one has developed the tech to grow grass in a closed dome. If you can grow mary-jane in a closet, I'm sure you can grow grass in a dome.

Cardinals closing Busch Stadium weekend
When I saw this, I quickly ran through my personal "top 5" who toiled at Busch. Lou Brock Bob Gibson Mark McGwire Ozzie Smith Willie McGee So what 5 players are slated to attend? A motley crew indeed (only 1 out of my 5) - http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2162366

Gammons on Delgado
Earlier this year, I started a thread suggesting that the Marlins fill the stadium $$ gap by trading Carlos, and freeing his contract money for stadium purposes. I was laughed off at the time, but this idea still has merit. If we could do that, and get 2 MLB-ready prospects, I could go for it, although I would want him out of the NLEast for sure.

Why do the Marlins.....
Two theories: 1- It is almost always hot here, meaning the guys can get loose fast (even the older guys like Harvey/Mando/TJ). Advantage pitchers (home & visitors). 2- In the late innings, the opposing batters are starting to feel the SoFla heat. A 92 MPH fastball looks like 112. Advantage - Marlins (big time).

Encarnacion's bunt
Jack has done this a couple times in the past week or so.? A runner is on second with no outs and he decides to bunt the runner over to third, usually in anticipation of a sac fly. It's unbelievable.? I didn't realize there was something wrong with scoring more than one run in an inning. 921840[/snapback] Remember, Jack flatly denies ordering a sac bunt before "late&close". He says players do it on their own, which leads to my next point. A "bunt-over" is successful >80% of the time. A single w/ man on second is successful maybe 32% of the time (hit, or grounder to RHS). So, short term "feel good" success points to the sac bunt. But it also points to a player who is afraid to fail. That's poison for a club hoping to go far in the post-season.

Encarnacion's bunt
So Delgado doubles with no outs, and Inky follows up with a bad bunt which hangs Carlos out to dry at third. Jack has said time-and-again that the players do it on their own. This morning on QAM he said that Inky was trying to bunt for a hit, or at least move CD to third. This is unacceptable. Inky should be absolutely reamed for this bad decision. There's no way you allow you #3 RBI guy to bunt in that situation. Robinson should have been all over him - did anyone see the reaction in the dugout? No way we should let players decide when to bunt, especially against a guy like Cy Carpenter. They must be instructed NOT to bunt unless Coxie gives the signal (except for JP & Looie, who have the skills to make a smart play). Rant over.........

Where can I watch Tuesday's game?
Katrina has knocked out my cable in Cutler Ridge. Anyone know of a bar or restaurant south of Kendall Drive that will show Tuesday's (FSN) game? Most normal hangouts are still out of power or CATV (Hoolie's, Little Hoolies, Corbett's, Toby's).
