Hanley gets pay Raise...

Featured Replies

News: After winning the National League's Rookie of the Year award, SS Hanley Ramirez was rewarded with a $73,000 pay raise for this season. The Marlins shortstop will get $400,000 in 2007, up from $327,000 in 2006. But $53,000 of that raise is built in as a result of the cost-of-living increase negotiated in the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. So, Ramirez's "extra money" amounts to about $20,000. "I don't care about the money," he said. "I just want to play."

I LOVE this kids attitude... Shadez gives 120% everytime he goes out there! STUD!

Some pay raise. $20,000 for winning rookie of the year!!!!!!! And they didn't have to give him anything. How generous of the ownership group. It's a good thing he's on the Marlins if he really doesn't care about money. Beinfest must have helped Loria tug his wallet out of his pocket. Hanley can put it aside to pay one month's maintenance on his New York condo in 2010.

Congrats Hanley.

Exactly.....17 HRs, .290 avg., 50 SB, ROY - we should have given him something extra!

Hanley is nobody's fool. Play nice, say the right things, and you won't screw up your chances to cash-in when the time comes. Cabrera said the same things. Don't buy all this garbage. Do any of you work your job for free? Would any of you continue to work if there wasn't an eventual pay raise? And wouldn't everyone here say whatever's necessary to get a pay increase similar in magnitude to what Hanley will receive after only three years of work experience?

This is not an indictment of either player. This is just a statement of fact, and a warning to the naive not to over-romanticize the intentions of professional athletes (key word: professional). They're certainly entitled to their money, but believing they don't care about it is foolish.

DUMB.

The whole point of baseball's salary system is to have control of players when they are young. Players get the salaries when they are veterans.

No matter how great Hanley is, and he may very well be my favorite Marlin...saying we should give him a raise at this stage in his career is stupidity, plain and simple. No way around it.

I'd love to commend the guy too... but come on, what else would he have said? He moves up my favorite ladder with a response of, "Jose Reyes craps more money than that and I'm better than him."

I have many issues with our ownership-actually dislike most of the way they operate-but not this time. This is what a 2nd yr player gets, regardless. Even if our payroll was 65 mill, this is what Hanley has earned. Do it again, then again and now you are looking at 6-7 mill in arby year. Don't write a check to help Hanley out, you will not be allowed a charitable deduction. Zimmerman just got $400,000 also.

I can't believe some of you are actually complaining about the amount of a raise Hanley got. Rediculous. I'd love a 20K raise after my first season at a job.

Congrats to Shadez it's well deserved.

lol we'll see in a few years

What he said.

Yea I know thats the truth... But I mean its good to hear that now... That he just wants to play. I mean some young players want the money right away after a big season and put that 1st on their priority list... Hanley isnt dumb he knows if he continues to play the way he does, he will BANK in no time!

Technically Hanley is only getting a $12,000 pay raise because of the tax bracket he is in...and add into that 4% inflation he's only getting about $11,500... so he's poor. lol

no but seriously if im calculating this right....he is only getting a 3.5% pay raise....which is less than inflation...so that means he is getting a PAYCUT!!!

note: i might be completely wrong...lol...somebody check it

This is part of the game that allows small payroll teams to remain competitive. Hanley'll get his. I just pray we use the system to our advantage and pay more now to save a lot later, hopefully (but doubtfully) learing from the Cabrera mistake.

There can only be 1 ROY, and I contend that whoever it is, on any team, deserves 50-100K extra. It wouldn't break the bank on the Marlins, or anybody else.

For what it's worth, the billionaire local owners of the Nationals known for their charity across the community followed the Marlins' lead in submitting Zimmerman's 2007 contract with a paltry raise.

I love this guy. I was more high on Uggla when last season started but they both have won my hearts. Only bad memory was that awful first game full of errors, but after that he did great.
