November 16, 200718 yr What if we were to trade Jacobs and have Uggla at first? I think Uggla could be a great first baseman, defensively. At this stage I think I would rather keep Uggla than Jacobs, but I'm not overly attached to either. Uggla is 5'11" rather short for a 1B Dude is not 5'11". I have stood next to him and he's shorter than me (I'm 5'10"). Most of the height listings are wrong, except for a few players (Miggy is a legit 6'3"-6'4", Dontrelle also).

Yeah I was thinking he was shorter than 5'11" because even on TV he looks shorter than 5'11", he looks like he's about 5'10 or 5'9". Which is even worse for First Base
November 17, 200718 yr so yea... Uggla was 7th in the NL in OPS 7th! But where was he in RUNS, HOME RUNS, RBIS
November 17, 200718 yr so yea... Uggla was 7th in the NL in OPS 7th! But where was he in RUNS, HOME RUNS, RBIS Uggla didn't make the top 50 in Heart Over Replacement Player. His Grit, Hustle, and Leadership ratings were also substandard by both traditional and advanced measures.

November 17, 200718 yr Uggla didn't make the top 50 in Heart Over Replacement Player. His Grit, Hustle, and Leadership ratings were also substandard by both traditional and advanced measures. I love a good HORP analysis
November 17, 200718 yr Everyone does know that he was 7th in the NL amonst 2b right? We arent talking about all players in MLB just 2b. So hes 7th of 16. Whatever I have no problem dealing an average defender who hits .240.
November 17, 200718 yr yea, if I wasn't an idiot I would have said he was 7th in the NL in OPS for a 2b

November 18, 200718 yr Ever hear of Steve Garvey? The short dude with the career .329 OBP. I hear he keeps getting overlooked for the hall of fame. ::crickets::
November 18, 200718 yr Granted, Dan Uggla has whiffed 290 times in his first 313 major league games....but it's stupid to just look at that. In 313 games in his two seasons with the Marlins he is 327 for 1,243 (.263 avg, .811 OPS) with 218 runs scored, 58 homers and 178 RBIs. 2B that are cheap and average 109 runs scored, 29 homers and 89 RBIs are very, very rare. With that in mind Uggla should be on the Marlins until he gets too expensive in the next 2-3 years.
November 18, 200718 yr eh, the runs and RBI are just a product of what is around him he's 7th in the NL for 2b in OPS this year.... that's about league average
November 18, 200718 yr I think he's a much better hitter than the average 2B. Last year he was 5th in MLB among 2B in OPS and this year he was tied for 9th in MLB if you park adjust the numbers. His problem is not his bat.

November 18, 200718 yr Over the past 2 years only Utley, Cano, and Freddy Sanchez have a higher OPS than Uggla for 2nd basemen in all of baseball. Technically Jeff Kent does too, but that's in 350 fewer ABs than Uggla.
November 19, 200718 yr .OPS was like 20 points under Willingham and no one has a problem with Hammer. #4 overall in the NL in extra base hits. His walk rate even improved some. Granted if his batting average drops much more next season it gets ugly.
November 19, 200718 yr #4 overall in the NL in extra base hits. Granted if his batting average drops much more next season it gets ugly. And when his XBH rate goes down because he overachieved in 2007 when it came to doubles.
November 19, 200718 yr We have a short, bulky, second base version of Adam Dunn. I hope you seriously don't believe that.
November 19, 200718 yr We have a short, bulky, second base version of Adam Dunn. I hope you seriously don't believe that. oh, he does
November 19, 200718 yr It should be added that next year he will not have Miguel Cabrera hitting right behind him so he will not have the protection that he normally has now. He will not be getting fastballs as often as he does which will produce a lower Batting average most likely anyways or at least a lower overall OPS.
November 19, 200718 yr #4 overall in the NL in extra base hits. Granted if his batting average drops much more next season it gets ugly. And when his XBH rate goes down because he overachieved in 2007 when it came to doubles. Maybe he did and maybe he didn't. Did he also overachieve then when he batted .282 in '06? Not that .282 is anything special, I just figure the real Uggla is somewhere between the '06 and '07 stats. And while his BA sunk, his walk rate improved as did his defense slightly. I don't subscribe to the Adam Dunn comment, but still... Look if it's part of a larger deal that improves the team in the end I'm fine with it. I'm just looking at the holes we need to fill and that is not one of them.
