Hendrickson gets Opening Day start

Featured Replies

FORT LAUDERDALE ? Mark Hendrickson was chosen by manager Fredi Gonzalez to start the Florida Marlins' season opener March 31 against the New York Mets at Dolphin Stadium.

"He pitched terrific in spring training and he's our veteran guy," Gonzalez said. "The way he's pitched in spring training, he deserves it."

Through four starts this spring, the 33-year-old has a 1.69 ERA. Through 16 innings, he has allowed 15 hits, two earned runs, walked two and struck out nine. In his last outing, March 18 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the 6-foot-9 lefty gave up three hits in six scoreless innings.

Henrickson, Miller, and three days of filler?

Fredi Gonzalez announced today that Hendrickson will be the starter on opening day. There are also rumors about a trade involving Jacobs for either Jeff Weaver or David Wells.

let's hope that isn't the case.

I doubt we have to worry about that, aren't they both free agents?

Seeing as they're both free agents, I don't think Jacobs will be necessary in order to acquire either one.

EDIT: you beat me to it Admin. Touch?.

I don't. Beckett's current success is great, but dontrelle really hit the downslope of his career hard. If he were on a better team the last few years- he would have went the way of mark fiderich. He was given the benefit of the doubt too often. I can't wait to see the young guys develop into more becketts and penny's and burnetts. Thats what i miss.

If dontrelle wasn't going to blow it past them, I would have choose Burnett's wildness and velocity over willis' ineffectiveness.

EDIT:, nevermind.

NOOOOO!!!! I want Jake to stay!!! :confused

I heard about those name as suggestions to pickup as free agents but nothing more. Even then they still might fall out of our price range.

I say sign either of them, I'm sure someone will give us something for them at the deadline. Some team will always overpay for pitching.

How crazy is that?

Mark (no pun intended) my words......

Hendrickson being our Opening Day starter is a sign of a long, painful season.

Not necessarily, it's only a sign of ST injuries. I don't think our chances for this year look any worse than 2006, and that was still a fun year.

All I am saying is that we might be pleasantly surprised by Hendrickson now that he can see.

I really think he can and WILL be a great pitcher this year.

Dude, at least give him the benefit of the doubt. He has had a good spring so far, why not wait till the season starts to see if he'll bomb. I'm not saying he will be great this season, or even good, but let him show us what he can offer now as a marlin.

Not worth a new thread, but...

Here's some good news of sorts. The Mets just announced their starting rotation and John Maine pitches fourth, meaning he'll not pitch against us in the opening series.

Considering his success I am quite pleased.
