Matt Treanor Released

Featured Replies

Matt Treanor, one of the true good guys in recent Marlins history, has been released.

The move should surprise no one after the Marlins made it clear they would go with the younger, better-hitting John Baker as their starting catcher next year. But it's still a bit stunning to consider Treanor -- as well as his gold medal-winning wife, Misty May-Treanor -- out of the organization after years of service.

Treanor, as an arbitration eligible, stood to make upwards of $900,000 this year if the Marlins had retained him. By shedding him now, two days before Friday's non-tender date, the Marlins drop their roster back to 39 players and will have the option of taking someone in the big-league portion of Thursday's Rule 5 draft.

Here's hoping Treanor gets a big-league job somewhere next year. He's a great handler of pitchers and a solid clubhouse presence. Unfortunately his bat just hasn't been able to keep pace.

Damn economy, people are losing their jobs left and right. Who's next?

Or maybe he had a .607 OPS last year, and a career .639.

Marlins can acquire a guy with more upside easily.

It kind of sucks to see the guy go, but I'm excited to see what kind of trade the F.O. will pull off as a result.

I know that we can get better on the field, but it feels like Treanor has been here for ten years so its hard to see him go. Best of luck to him in whatever triple A team he ends up on.

Always scary when you let someone go before you have a replacement in your hand.

Gonna miss Matt. Seemed like a great guy and loved that defense. Wish him all the best.

Bummed we lose our Misty May privileges now though.

A Mysterous Rule 5 Draftee will join the Treanor' spot.

I just scanned over a list to see if anyone jumped out at me.

Lou Palmisano is a guy I remember from the Arizona Fall League. Seems to have good consistently good OBPs with respectable SLGs for a catcher. Named 2006, 2007 and 2008 "Best Defensive Catcher" prospect in Brewers system (doesn't mean he's necessarily stellar, just better than the alternatives). 11 HRs in AA in 2007. Had meniscus surgery last March, missed a lot of 2008. Out of St Thomas Aquinas HS.

Just a wild guess, as I've done minimal research. There may be a better prospect even.

Colt Morton from SD, Ben Davis (former top prospect, now old) are others I recognized.

Losing Treanor might just knock the Marlins out of the playoffs. LOL! The Marlins will likely have no problem finding a backup catcher better than him.

I'm bummed that Matty's gone simply because of his tenure with the organization, and because he was such a great guy (he lead the clubhouse prayer two years ago whn Juan Encarnacion was struck in the eye while w/ the Reds). However, the injuries were starting to pile up and there really wasn't a place for him w/ the Fish anymore w/ the emergance of Baker. I think he'll catch on w/ someone fairly quickly, as he's a solidd backup and handles a pitching staff well. Saying he will end up in AAA is a discredit.

I'm terrified at the prospect of Rabelo getting the backup job, but seeing as how we've had no luck so far finding another backstop through trades (and because he's on the 40 man roster), I believe the article when it syas the Marlins are prepared to go with him as the backup. He showed me no upside what-so-ever last year, poor defense and offense. I'd much rather go w/ Paul Hoover if we're looking at internal candidates (though he did declare for FA).

8am this morning is the deadline to have players off the roster so the spot is available should it be needed in the Rule 5 draft later today. Hence, Treanor is gone and I wouldn't be surprised to hear Andino was traded early this morning depending on their roster needs.

This is disappointing. Matt wasn't a very good player, but he's a class guy and was always active in the community. It's sad to see him go :confused Miss ya, Trean. You too, Misty :blush

yup :confused

Sorry to see Matt go, as a person he's a great guy he was one always to stop and sign autographs and hand out baseballs to the kids. As a player the Marlins can find a better player for less money, plus this gives the team options to make trades pick someone rule 5. Good luck to Matt wherever he ends up!

It might also be worth mentioning there is always the possibility, like others before him, if healthy he will re-sign with the Marlins and go to New Orleans where he will be available in the event of an injury.

What are the chances? I have no idea.

Sad to see him go but his swing drove me crazy loved his d. I keep thinkin of when he got that foul tip with his bare hand.

Matt Treanor is a class act. Baseball needs more class acts. Glad we got to know him and we wish him all the best.

I feel the same, well, except for the Triple A part. I think he'll end up on some team as a backup.

This is sad news to me. Matt was the last player left in the organization to have played for the Portland Sea Dogs when they were a Marlins affiliate. That team is why I became a Marlins fan. I know both Fredi and Carlos Tosca are with the team (and they both spent time as manager of the Sea Dogs), but it's not exactly the same as seeing players go through the system. It truly feels like the end of an era. :( Good luck Matt - I look forward to continuing to follow your career. Thank you for showing the team the right way to play the game, and your perseverance and leadership will be missed.

Palmisano taken #5 in the draft, then traded.

::chest pounds::

::toots own horn::

lol

Guy knew how to make a play at the plate, always loved that. I'd always scream "Olivo pay attention to that!!!"

I'm hopeful though, if we can bring in a solid guy to pair with Baker our production from the catching position could soar.

Good luck Matty T.
