ESPN 2009 Predictions

Featured Replies

I was just thinking today how Nolasco/Johnson/Volstad could potentially be the new version of Glavine/Maddux/Smoltz.

Scary.

I'm just hoping we can live up to these newfound expectations. They are a tasty pick at +3000 to win the World Series :cool

I think they're more likely than the "average" team to win the WS, which is what that line is saying.

that's a little much, but yeah there's a lot to look forward to. The problem is just one injury to one of those starting pitchers and we are screwed. We still have very little depth in the starting pitching department ready to step in after an injury. Hopefully West is ready, but that is doubtful.

In my opinion, we have more than enough depth at SP if one of the 5 get hurt. No one has lived up to potential, but it's nice to have Vandenhurk, Badenhop, De La Cruz, Tucker, Meyer, Trahern, and even Kensing in a pinch be able to step in and start some games for us. That's a lot of guys that we could use if needed.

Yea, no. First of all, Kensing, Tucker, Cruz, and Meyer are all RP now, and Kensing/Cruz/Meyer are all out of options so they may not even make the team or stay with the Marlins. Second, Trahern is nowhere near ready. This leaves Vanden Hurk, who is clearly not ready and needs more time, and Badenhop, who just isn't very good. We desperately need a 6th SP. Pavano makes a lot of sense. By the middle of the year, we'll god willingly West will be ready. He's our only legitimate SP prospect right now.

The problem is the majority of the pitchers you named have been terribly when coming in as a starting pitcher. We may have a lot of options, but I don't see many reliable options.

I remember someone (Ron Gant?) on a braves broadcast in '06 saying the same thing about Nolasco/Johnson/Olsen.

Really? Nolasco? He wasn't particularly good in 06. You sure he didn't say Willis/Johnson/Olsen?

hopefully management can keep them together like the Braves kept their big 3 together.

The Braves big Three stuck together for a pretty good long time. And for all their success, they only have one championship to show for it.

First time that I don't see "Marlins" and "low attendance" right next to each other. That's something to cheer for :cheers . As for the article, we all knew this stuff, anyways.

Don't worry, it'll be there the next 20 articles about the Marlins.

I like it better when they predict we're gonna suck. It's sweeter when we "shock the world".

Yeah, part of the fun is calling my parents at 11 PM and saying, "WTF! Ricky Nolasco pitched a 3-hit shutout and Uggla hit 3 Home Runs and all Baseball Tonight did was show the score with a random, stupid highlight! And that doofus still calls him Dan Ugly - it wasn't funny the first time............stupid ESPN, when will they give the Marlins any airtime?".

and no offense but the same was said a long time ago about Beckett, Penny and Burnett.

who IMO have more talent than any of the bunch we have today.

I'll never watch Baseball Tonight again once MLB Tonight starts.

I wasn't willing to upgrade my Comcast to watch High Stakes Poker (although it's a friekin awesome show, but I heard no one picked it up again, which is ridiculous)(I'm a poor college student), but I'm extremely tempted for MLB network. You guys are already making me extremely jealous. At least they posted the Maybin interview on mlb.com.

Im sure ill still flip over to baseball tonight when MLB's on commercial but Ill be interested to see how MLB covers us if we start off well. Will they give us some air time or will it be all mets and phils when talking about the east like baseball tonight.

Right now i can uderstand them talking about the yanks, mets, and phils on hot stove cause they have made alot of noise unlike us but we better get some air time if were playing well when the season starts.

ESPN has two choices, perhaps three. Continue doing what they have been as if nothing on the landscape has changed, cut back on coverage under the guise of a cost-cutting move, or lastly beef up coverage to go head to head with MLBN in hopes of holding onto their advertiser base. It is after all all about advertising dollars just as the decade long battle for a new stadium here has been more about who gets what share of the South Florida sports dollar as anything else.

I think the fact that ESPN is on basic cable will keep things in their favor.

Though I'm also not one to look at what kind of percent that things are spread out as. I assume there's a lot more people with basic cable then those with upgraded/dish, but I could very well be wrong and more people have it/split/close enough to the point where that isn't really an edge for espn
