Marlins extend manager Fredi Gonzalez through 2011

The Marlins announced on Tuesday that they extended manager Fredi Gonzalez's contract through 2011.

Owner Jeffrey Loria made him the offer Saturday. Gonzalez said he didn't let Loria finish the sentence before agreeing.

"We are extremely pleased to have Fredi continue his great work with our organization as we enter another exciting chapter in Marlins history," said Loria. "Fredi's ability to work closely with our players and staff has made us a better organization and I look forward to future success with Fredi at the helm."

Gonzalez, 45, was named the ninth manager in club history on Oct. 3, 2006 and has compiled a 155-168 record in two seasons with the Marlins. He led the team to a 84-77 mark in 2008, becoming just the third Marlins manager to guide the team to a winning record (Jim Leyland - 1997; Jack McKeon - 2003-05), and was named The Sporting News 2008 NL Manager of the Year. Gonzalez, who won his Major League managerial debut, 9-2 at Washington, also served as a coach under manager Tony LaRussa for the 2007 National League All-Star Team.

He was the third base coach on the Marlins' Major League staff from 1999-2001. Gonzalez re-joined the Marlins for the 2007 season after five seasons in the Atlanta Braves organization, including four as the Braves' third base coach.

Marlins have truly been lucky to have great managers in their brief existence. I believe Leyland, McKeon, and Fredi Gonzalez are all great managers. Even John Boles did a good job as a past manager.

I never thought Joe Girardi was good at all. Neither Tony Perez or Rene Lachmann (just solid coach).

I used to watch and met Gonzalez when he managed the single A Brevard County Manatees, won Minor League Manager of the Year also.

This should put to bed the idle rumor that gets kicked around from time to time that Fredi was here biding his time until the Braves' job opened up.

Does anyone know roughly how much a manager such as Fredi Gonzalez will earn?

well his initial contract was 3 years for 1.5 million. so thats $500,000 a year. I'm assuming they gave him a raise. so I say anywhere between 500,000 to 750,000..

eh, good to see a manager stay for once. Hopefully with a healthy rotation Fredi handles the bullpen better than he did last year.

Sure that what you all say, but when the season begin you all will be singing a different tune of "Fired Fredi!".

IMO it would have made more sense to see what happens this season, since the expectations are to compete for the first time in a while.

Wouldn't exactly call Fredi great but for what he is wanted he is perfect. He won't make waves and is a likable guy. He gets along with his players for the most part

He needs to learn how to manage a bullpen a lot better. That's my only real gripe with him.

yea thats my concern...im happy for fredi but at the same time...eh...needs to learn.

Fredi's a smart guy, and after what happened to Pinto down the stretch (and the rest of the bullpen), I think he'll do a better job.

I'd like to see him a little more firey at times, but that has never been his style; I suppose that's what the players respond to. I'm just concerned Hanley's (and possibly now Dan's) egos will grow with their salaries and visibility, and they might need a kick in the pants every once in a while to keep them on the straight and narrow.

All in all, I think it's a clear indication of how much the organization as a whole respects the job he's been doing, as this extension will make him the longest-tenured manager in our history. Pretty poignent accomplishment for one of the whole organization's first employees and its first manager (Eerie).

I find all managers infuriating, but Fredi less so than most. I still hate sacrifice bunts by non-pitchers, but Fredi is hardly the only guy guilty of that.

Congrats to Fredi, but i have also been agrivated by how he manages the pen at times, but this is more so how he allowed Gregg to blow games for basically the entire season. With him gone, things will get better, and with more experience, Fredi will become an even better manager. But congratulations Fredi on a well deserved extension.
