Mariners claim Jesus Delgado

Featured Replies

Mariners claimed RHP Jesus Delgado off waivers from the Marlins.

Delgado, one of the players the Marlins got from the Red Sox in the Josh Beckett deal, is still just 24, but he's now out of options and isn't yet ready for the majors. He had a solid 3.45 ERA in 57 1/3 innings as a Double-A reliever last season, but he walked 31 batters. He had given up four runs in three innings this spring. Although the Mariners will take a look at him, they'll probably just end up trying to slip him through waivers themselves later this spring.

Yeah, wouldn't it have been better to wait until after spring training?

I mean, right now a team can claim him and see what happens in ST, see how things play out at the start of the season.

If you do it at the end of ST, a team will only claim him if they can keep him on the 25 man roster.

Although I guess the mindset was "he's sucked so bad so far in ST, hopefully nobody will claim him, cuz if he does better later, people will"

But yeah, we've basically known this was going to happen since day one of the offseason.

If the Mariners claimed him off waivers the Fish still can pull him back if they are so inclined. Obviously though the FO wouldn't go through exercise without some plan in mind and like Gibbons it may lead to a chance at work elsewhere for Delgado.

Wasn't Delgado with the Marlins once before, wound up with the RS and then came back a second time? Or am I thinking of someone else?

Someone else.

We got Delgado in the Beckett deal and he's been hanging out in the minor leagues since. He's out of options and really had no shot at making the team, so like nny said this was to be expected. It's just curious why they wouldn't make him the final cut on the team to try and sneak him through waivers and leave him in AAA for the year.

whatever, he was horrible anyway. now the FO has to realize kensing sucks too so they can DFA his butt as well

A guy that averages a K per inning has potential, and considering the Marlins don't have the greatest of proven options in the bullpen...they'd be foolish to just DFA Kensing.

Logan's a perfectly capable RP. Pretty much average with room to improve.

they never gave delgado a chance man i hate when the team does this sh*t

Only 25 guys (12 pitchers) per team. Stop making a big deal about nothing.

That's Harvey Garcia acquired with Delgado and two guys no one ever heard of Ramirez and Sanchez JK JK :whistle

i might have exaggerated but he just pissed me off during some games. i would rather have lindstrom, nunez, pinto, RVH, DLC, proctor, tucker, and tankersley in the pen over kensing. if we carry 7 guys in the pen that means 2 of these guys won't make it. RVH might be in the minors so who would you take out to keep kensing in the bullpen

Tankersley

we need 2 lefties in the pen so pinto doesn't break down again like last season

Jesus didn't show the impressive performance in major, minor and ST.

He've been keep a corner for the mean time.

Anibal & Hanley is the big pieces of Boston-deal, Not Delgado and Garcia.

Absolutely. That's why we claimed Dan Meyer and Zack Kroenke. Both aren't playing much in the games, but I presume the staff is watching them carefully. I suspect after this latest Tank blowup, we start seeing a bit more of each of them to see if they can hang around as our 2nd lefty/7th reliever all season.

Longterm just to note, this probably fixes itself by next year as we have three notable lefties in AA (West, Thompson, G. Taylor), and Tank will be sent back to NOLA to work on his stuff another year. Even longer term, first two pitchers Marlins drafted in 2008 (Hand, Olmos) also southpaws. I also suspect we will be targetting left handers when we trade off most of Uggla, Hermida, Cantu, Ross, Amezaga, and some of the current pitchers next offseason in the last big trade maneuvers before the stadium. I think this will be the last year for awhile where we struggle to find adequate left handers. We're grooming quite a few big arms at the moment.

- RVH, Tucker and Tank

+ Meyer and Kensing

RHP - Lindstrom, Proctor, Nunez, DLC, Kensing

LHP - Pinto, Meyer

Tucker, Ceda, RVH, Badenhop, etc. waiting

Not a bad pen.

Oh, and Badenhop may have played himself into strong consideration. The problem is if you keep 2 lefties, there are only 5 spots for righties. Lindstrom, Proctor and Nunez are locks. And I believe DLC and Kensing are out of options, so they have advantages for making the team out of the gate. So it'll probably be those 5 unless they all of a sudden are really down on either DLC or Kensing (which would be quite surprising).

Why is everyone so quick to say players suck...and that certain players will not make the team? Spring Training isn't over yet.

I still believe Tankersley can get the job done b/c he's done it before. If you're going to dismiss him, you might as well scratch off Kroenke as well...didn't he give up SEVEN runs the other day?
