July 21, 200917 yr I like what I am reading from Miller regarding him being sent down. He is using one of my new favorite buzzwords: consistency. He seems to realize that he can be a good to great pitcher, but he needs to prove it with every start. I am happy he is going to get some work in away from the Bigs and that he seems okay with the reasoning behind it.

Halladay has given up 2 HR the whole year and has played against the redsox, yankees, and tampa 5 times this year.

Just be aware that Haren has HORRIFIC 1st half/2nd half splits for a few year going now. Like 200+ OPS difference horrific.

July 21, 200917 yr Author This is bulls***, he was balling except for the last two starts. Hopefully they are riding with a 4 man rotation for the next few weeks and just wanted him to get work in. Dammit. No, he wasn't. He's had five bad starts since coming back from the injury in May. He did not pitch well in his starts against Tampa and Boston, but beat up on the Orioles, the much weaker offensive threat of the AL East. He's had more horrendous starts than he has had quality starts. Much of the blame is on Detroit for rushing him. Miller became a top ten prospect based upon scouting evaluation alone. Miller pitched so few innings in the minors, it cannot really be said that he demonstrated his potential. He has been mostly mediocre throughout his entire major league stint, with his only substantive demonstrative success coming out of his three years in college ball. He can be a pretty decent arm, I guess, but he needs a lot of work with his delivery and his control. He looks just as clueless on the mound the last couple of starts as Bonifacio looks at the plate.

It kinda makes some sense too, considering the Marlins entered the night carrying 13 pitchers, instead of the normal 12. Hopper hasn't been given a fair chance to start, imo. This has been the year where he's really progressed...done it as a long reliever. But he also went into Philadelphia and pitched 5 innings allowing 1 ER, and was never given a chance to start after that. Our pen is pretty deep right now, and if we don't have that 5th starter...starters are way more valuable than long relievers. I think The Hopper deserves another start or two to see what he's got. This. And Miller going to the minors tells me that the FO is still serious about making a run this year. A very good thing.

You can play with the parameters in any possible way to make him look good (or bad). Before Arizona, I absolutely would not think a AAA demotion was necessary. Anyone watching his last two starts is hopefully competent enough to observe that his delivery and control were completely out of whack.

Anyone watching his last two starts is hopefully competent enough to observe that his delivery and control were completely out of whack. forgive me if I'm mistaken, but in the post by you prior to mine, you were making the argument that he's been mediocre or bad throughout his career and hasn't shown anything. I agree his mechanics and delivery got all f***ed up in Zona and he needs to godown and fix it. But prior to that, he had been mostly pretty good since he came back from the DL. If you want to say I'm 'playing with the parameters' that's fine, but when a player comes off the DL, I think it's fair to judge them differently than when they had admittedly been pitching hurt. Perhaps he has reaggravated the injury from earlier? It's possible. But he was good from the DL to Arizona, and was a noticably different pitcher in that time fram. His k rates were higher, his bb were significantly lower, and he was much more consistent in his release point (pitchfx bears this out.)

July 21, 200917 yr I can't say I'm surprised or even diappointed by his demotion. I really think he can be a #3-4 starter, but he needs a little time in the bushes to work on his mechanics.

If we were throwing in the towel, he'd probably stay up here to get work. Got to disagree with this. He's better off working things out in AAA, where the pressure is very small. Then he can come back and see if he has any better showings against MLB hitters this time. I'm convinced that the combination of both us and Detroit rushing Miller has contributed to his struggles.

Huge difference getting to face teams like the DBacks and Padres to facing the likes of the Yankees, Red Sox, and Rays. A difference but not that huge of a difference. People play the AL > NL card to the extreme. They aren't the ~1 ERA difference but Lincecum's stuff would still have him as being a big strikeout low walk guy and Halladay's stuff would still have him being a good strike out no walk GB guy. The biggest difference would probably be in HR rates. And looking at park and league adjusted stats say the same thing. Not a big difference but Timmy being better.
